W  hile ancient castles, low-slung cities, and mud-brick fortresses are prominent throughout Oman, the sultan- ate’s natural beauty is the overarching draw—especially for families keen to embrace outdoor splendors. In this once- powerful empire, wind-blown deserts mingle with rugged mountains, pristine coastline, and dramatic wadis that are punctuated by limestone cliffs and teal-hued pools. Our journey begins in Muscat, Oman’s history-permeated port capital, where we take in the Grand Mosque before going whale-watching and snorkeling in a dolphin- filled sea. We peruse a souk bright with colorful textiles and jewelry, engage our senses at lively waterfront fish markets, and learn to use local spices in a chef-led culinary class. Moving inland, we travel through winding canyons to the Jebel Akhdar range, aptly named the “green jewel” for its cool climate and stunning vegetation. Ambles between photogenic mountain villages, archery lessons, and time with artisans at the Nizwa Fort unveil interesting traditions. Then it’s on to the Wahabi Sands, whose skyrocketing sand dunes form the eastern edge of the Empty Quarter. We ride camels across vast golden landscapes and swim in the dazzling waters of a cavern-turned-sinkhole. Returning to
