South Africa Family Safari

Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, sets the scene for our final chapter. Its spectacular “green Kalahari” location offers grasslands, dunes, and mountains that shelter the Big Five as well as graceful giraffes, heroic dung beetles, nocturnal aardwolves, and mischievous meerkats—all of which we track on guided bush walks and game drives. Evenings are full of activi- ties for youngsters, sundowners—and perhaps spa treat- ments—for grown-ups, and delectable meals for all.

CAPE TOWN, COAST, AND WILDLIFE

SAFARI · TOURING · KAYAKING | 12 DAYS · CUSTOM

O ur South Africa Family Safari thoroughly appreciates the country’s rugged landscapes, mix of cultures, exceptional hospitality, and fabulous safari experiences, all based from three casually elegant accommodations. We begin in Cape Town, discovering the city’s historic sights and botanical stars, ascending Table Mountain for breathtaking views across Table Bay to Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), learning about conservation at the Cheetah Outreach Centre, and sea kayaking to a colony of 3,000 African penguins. In the nearby township of Kayamandi (which means “sweet home” in Xhosa), we’re invited to meet artists and entre- preneurs, see community projects, and hear stories of daily life over lunch in a Xhosa family home. Making our way to Walker Bay and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, we explore ancient cave dwellings, inves- tigate tide pools, meet porcupines and bushbuck, identify fynbos, and watch for fur seals, great white sharks, and whales. In peak months, it’s not uncommon to see pods of 50 or more southern right whales in the sheltered waters of Walker Bay, breaching and lobtailing as they go.

I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.
