Into Patagonia TOURING · DAY HIKING | 9 DAYS · GROUP

within a wilderness, this estancia is a heavenly place to wander, fish, and revel in views of the massive peaks guarding the Patagonian Ice Cap and their glaciers. We end the trip in bustling Buenos Aires, swapping boundless natural panoramas for the city’s remarkable architectural diversity. Into Patagonia is led by a quintessential Patagonian: the affable and encyclopedically erudite Janko Gorse, who decades ago chucked a successful accounting career in Buenos Aires to follow his bliss south to the mountains and plains of Patagonia. If you desire more time outdoors before returning to civilization, we’ve crafted an extension among astounding Mount Fitz Roy and its spiky neighbors. Based from El Chaltén, a charmingly scruffy little town, we hike in these stupendous, almost unearthly mountains, returning in the evenings for showers and festive dinners. feb. 9–17 from $11,625 ($14,200 with extension) Day 1  arrive in Santiago, wine tour ✦  2  fly to Punta Arenas, drive to Torres del Paine ✦  3 & 4  Torres del Paine hiking ✦  5  drive to El Calafate, Perito Moreno Glacier ✦  6 & 7  boat to Estancia Cristina; hiking and outdoor excursions ✦  8  Estancia Cristina, return to El Calafate ✦  9  fly to Buenos Aires and depart, or begin extension.

O f earth’s 37 billion or so acres, very few are as eye- catching as those we delight in on this trip. And of Melville’s “attending marvels of a thousand Patagonian sights and sounds,” we’ve chosen the most marvelous. After savoring Chilean varietals in the wine region near Santiago, we fly south to Patagonia’s iconic moun- tain playground, Torres del Paine. For two splendid days, we hike among icy lakes and jaw-dropping peaks. Then we journey across the border to the Argentine town of El Calafate, stopping en route to gape at the mammoth Perito Moreno Glacier as it slowly calves into Lago Argentino, one of the world’s largest glacial lakes. Next it’s by boat to Estancia Cristina, a famous old wilderness ranch found for us long ago by Patagonian sage Yvon Chouinard. Set against the lush, snowcapped moun- tains of far-flung Patagonia, unreach- able by road, a wilderness

We’re happy to handcraft a private Patagonia adventure for friends or families, weaving in Chiloé Island, the Argentine Lake District, gaucho culture, and more.
