New   Solar Eclipse Argentina and Patagonia Icons HIKING · HORSEBACK RIDING | 12 DAYS · GROUP

O n December 14, 2020, the moon will pass between the sun and the earth, fully obscuring the fireball in the sky and turning bright day to eerie, astounding dark- ness—at least for those of us planetary beings standing in the narrow path of totality, which is exactly where this adventure takes us. We’ve arranged for a private eclipse viewing in the area expected to have the longest duration of totality and the best weather conditions across all of South America.

Over two days and three nights at Pilo-Lil, based from a deluxe tented camp, we learn from him about the sky and its significance in ancient cultures and get tips on photographing stars at night. We look through telescopes and contemplate constellations—which feel upside down and backwards compared to what we see in the North- ern Hemisphere—and enjoy hiking, yoga, horseback riding, and cultural outings that take us deeper into the northern Patagonia steppe. Before the headline event, we spend a week savor- ing the quintessential peaks and glaciers of Patagonia (which we rave about a couple pages west of here), and wind our way through Argentina’s ravishing Lake District, drinking in the alpine mosaic of snow-dusted mountains, dense forests, and aquamarine lakes. dec. 6–17 from $18,450 Day 1  arrive in Santiago ✦  2  fly to Puerto Natales, drive to Torres del Paine National Park ✦  3–5  Torres del Paine hiking ✦  6  drive to Los Glaciares National Park ✦  7  private boat excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier; hiking ✦  8  fly to Bariloche; drive to Neuquén Province, with culinary experience ✦  9 & 10  eclipse viewing, outdoor and cultural activities, stargazing ✦  11  drive to San Martín de Los Andes, fly to Buenos Aires ✦  12  depart.

Pilo-Lil, a 22,000-acre, family-owned private ranch in the Neuquén Province of Argentina, welcomes us as its exclu- sive guests to witness the celestial event far from crowds and light pollu- tion. Standing alongside us to offer insights is Dr. Ed Krupp, the award- winning astronomer and longtime director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, who (in his own words) loves put- ting people “eyeball to eyeball with the cosmos.”
