THE PRESIDENT, addressing the meeting said:— Since our last meeting the hand of death has removed from amongst us several members of our profession. Amongst these were Mr. Charles St. George Orpen, a well- known and distinguished member of the Society, and ex-President of the Council, a prominent supporter of the Solicitors' Bene volent Association and an active helper in all matters appertaining to the interests of the profession. Mr. Joseph Alien, of Lisburn, who was for upwards of twenty years an Extra-Ordinary member of the Council, and Major Hugh J. Jones, District Probate Registrar in Waterford, and on your behalf I tender our respectful sympathy to the relatives. You may recollect that at our last General Meeting the then President drew attention to the undesirable state of affairs by which the County Registrar, as a result of legisla tion passed some years ago, was becoming the holder of numerous offices, some of them involving him in situations of conflicting interests, and all tending to curtail the efficiency of the administration of what must always remain the main and most important part of his duties, viz. : those he exercises as the Principal Executive Officer of the Circuit Court. HALF-YEARLY GENERAL MEETING. A Half-yearly General Meeting of the Society was held on Tuesday, 16th May, at the Solicitors' Buildings, Four Courts, Dublin, the President, Mr. D. J. Reilly, in the chair. The following members were also present: Messrs. P. R. Boyd (Vice-President), E. H. Burne, J. J. Duggan, E. J. Mallins, H. P. Mayne, S. O h-Uadhaigh, P. F. O'Reilly, C. G. Stapleton, Basil Thompson, L. J. Jameson, C. J. Gore-Grimes, E. J. O'Brien, D. D. MacDonald, C. J. Rutherfoord, James J. O'Connor, E. J. Kenny, P. K. M. Carey, D. B. Gilmore, J. B. McCann, H. E. W. Flanagan, V. P. Kennedy, R. J. Muldowney, Patk. Glynn, A. Clarke, W. J. M. Coulter, E. R. Banim. The Secretary read the notice convening the meeting and the minutes of the Half- yearly General Meeting held on the 26th November, 1938, the latter of which were signed by the President. On the motion of Mr. P. R. Boyd, Vice- President seconded by Mr. John J. Duggan, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: " That Mr. A. E. Prentice, Mr. P. Glynn and Mr. E. J. O'Brien be appointed Auditors of the Society's accounts for year ending 30th April, 1939." The President nominated the following members to be Scrutineers of Ballot for election of Council to be held in November
