MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. 14th January. Twenty-nine members present, The Chief Justice. A letter in reply was read from the Chief Justice expressing his thanks for the con– gratulations of the Council on his appoint– ment conveyed to him by the President of the Society. Courts of Justice Act, 1936. In response to the request of the Minister for Justice the Council made appointments of Solicitors to represent the profession on Rules Committees constituted under the Act. Council of Law Reporting. The Council appointed Mr. Henry P. Mayne to be one of the two representatives of the Society on the Council of Law Reporting, in room of Mr. T. W. Delany, resigned. Estate Duty. A letter in reply was read from the Controller of -Death Duties in reference to the difficulties which have arisen in con– nection with'the charging of Estate Duty on the proceeds.of policies of insurance effected with British companies on the lives of persons who die"1 domiciled in Saorstat Eireann, and stating that the matter is at the present time

under discussion with the British Revenue Authorities. The Controller stated that he hopes to be able shortly to inform the Council of the result. Special Examiner A letter was read from Mr. J. Malvern White tendering to the Council his resigna– tion of the office of Special Examiner, owing to his having been appointed Solicitor to the Provincial Bank of Ireland. The Council directed a letter in reply conveying their congratulations to Mr. White on his appoint– ment, and expressing appreciation of his services to the Society, first as Professor for five years, and subsequently as Special Examiner for ten years. OBITUARY. MR. ARTHUR S. V. KNOX, Solicitor, died on the 6th January, 1937. Mr. Knox served his apprenticeship with the late Mr. Joseph Lockhart, Lisburn ; was admitted in Trinity- Sittings, 1909, and practised at Aghalee up to 1916,..when he retired.
