29th July. Twenty-four members present. Remuneration of Solicitors assigned by the State. A letter having been written to the Attorney-General conveying the request of the Council that the scale of remuneration for Solicitors assigned by the State in the Central Criminal Court to defend prisoners on capital charges should be increased. A reply from the Attorney-General was read, in which attention is drawn to the con– sideration of the fact that in undertaking the defence of a prisoner on a capital charge, Counsel and Solicitor are primarily dis– charging a public duty. The letter in reply further stated that the writer had taken the matter up with the Minister for Finance, with the result that the refresher fee would be increased from two guineas to three guineas per day where the Solicitor concerned is ordinarily resident in country practice, and is called upon to attend personally -during the trial for the defence in these cases. Adjournment. The Council adjourned until 7th October, unless otherwise specially summoned.

MEETINGS OF THE COUNCIL. 8th July. Thirty-one members present. Professorship. The Council elected Mr. Eugene L. Boland, B.A., LL.B., N.U.I., Solicitor, to be Professor of Common Law to the Society, in room of Mr. James J. Hickey, Solicitor, whose term of office has expired. Special Examiner. The Council elected Mr. Kenneth C. Bailey, M.A., Sc.D., Litt.D., Fellow- of Trinity College, Dublin, to be Special Examiner for the Preliminary Examinations of the Society, in room of Mr. Frank V. Gordon, ex-Scholar, T.C.D., Solicitor, resigned. Finance Act, 1928, Section 6. It was resolved that a letter be written to the Revenue Commissioners drawing atten– tion to delay experienced by members of the profession in the furnishing of certificates of payment of income tax under this Section.
