New high temperature cables facility

Leoni, the German wire, cable and wiring systems specialist, has extended its range of special cable products to include cables for use at temperatures above 150°C. The Leoni HighTemp Solutions company was set up in August 2006 to fulfil this role and its new facility, which will initially employ 40 people, is expected to begin production soon. The site covers approximately 8,500m². Leoni HighTemp Solutions relies on silicone and fluorinated polymers for cable insulation. These materials are well suited for use under adverse conditions at temperatures between 150°C and 1,000°C, which are common in industrial plant and in vehicle engine compartments. Dr Klaus Probst, chairman of the management board of Leoni AG and in charge of the wire and cable division, said, “We are now able to offer our customers tailor-made, all-in solutions from a single source – from application- specific insulation material through to the complete cable system.” The company is being assisted by Studer, the Swiss cable specialist which has been part of the Leoni Group since July 2006. Studer has the equipment required to perform ‘irradiation crosslinking’,

a process by which cable can be made exceptionally resilient and temperature resistant. The Leoni Group’s principal customer base is the automotive industry, for which Leoni develops and manufactures products ranging from single-core automotive cables through to complete wiring systems with integrated electronics. In addition to products for the car and commercial vehicle industry, the company’s range of products and services encompasses copper wires and strands, copper flexibles, data cables, insulated high-voltage cables, control cables, power cords and special cables tailor made to customer specifications. Novel scanners for wall thickness measurement UMAC ® Z50 and UMAC ® Z100 Zumbach Electronics are introducing brand new ultrasonic wall thickness scanners. The completely new design (patent pending), allows the transducers to be synchronously adjusted to the best possible measuring position within seconds (and can be motorized upon request). The scanners cover an outside diameter range from 5 to 100mm (2 to 4"), depending on the model. They represent a smart and simple solution for fully non-contact, in-line wall

thickness measurement of tube, hose and cable jackets. In combination with the proven WALLMASTER data acquisition, processing and display system from Zumbach, a full process control can additionally be accomplished. The new ultrasonic wall thickness scanners have many advantages and numerous benefits: easy product change within a few seconds, thanks to a quickly removable segment; quick and easy symmetrical positioning of all transducers, centrally adjustable; available for 4 and 6 point measurement; a large measuring range with the same scanner; no readjustments, no tools and no change of transducers; fully non-contact, uncritical centering; 100% made of non-corrosive materials for maintenance-free long-life operation under water; extremely compact, for installation into cooling trough directly after the extruder; automatic control and easy centering. • • • • • • • • •
