From the outset, the submission from Greg Wright of the Yorkshire Post scored highly with the judges. The preliminary scoring phase had him occupying a top two position and, once the panellists sat down to discuss the merits more fully of each journalist on the shortlist, his victory was assured. “I really like the punchy style which he uses to capture our attention. What’s more, his choice of topics – all based around understanding the needs of his readers – was very good as well,” one panellist pointed out. “I thought he asked some properly searching questions – essential for anyone in the shake-up for a journalism award - and he’s also got a great writing style,” another commented. “These were relevant and interesting subjects, clearly written and with strong useful themes for readers – especially the cheques and cold-calling salesmen stories,” a third judge added.
