POWERS IRISH WHISKEY AND GROUND ESPRESSO BARS JOIN FORCES FOR WORLD WHISKEY DAY

On the third Saturday of May each year, something big happens in the whisk(e)y world. Across all seven continents (yes, even Antarctica), people gather to celebrate the world’s greatest spirit. For some it’s a social get together over a few measures at their local, while for others it’s an altogether grander aair. Some will be new to whisk(e)y, while others will have their favourites. Whatever the case, though, the global sentiment is the same: this is the day to share some love for the spirit that truly does unite the world. It’s easy to see why whisk(e)y lovers get excited about World Whisky Day and at Powers we are delighted to be an o†cial partner of World Whisky Day and share our love and passion with the literal world of whisk(e)y drinkers at a time when the entire world is talking about, buying and drinking whisk(e)y. celebratory Newspaper for Power’s Irish Whiskey… Welcome to the

A PERFECT PAIRING WHISKEY & COFFEE further than one of the world’s favourite cocktails. Both are rich, complex drinks with colourful histories. Both have huge followings. Both require time, skill and craft to create and serve perfectly.

For these reasons Powers and coee is a perfect collaboration. One noticable similarity between whiskey and coee is the type of person who drinks them. For the most part people are now willing to pay a little more, for a better experience. Whether it’s for a freshly roasted, perfectly served coee or paying a few pounds more for beautiful, single pot still Irish whiskey. There is also a thirst for knowledge. People want to know everything about what they’re drinking. Where is my coee from? Who roasted it? Steamed milk or foam? The same can be said for whiskey. Where is it from? What type of casks was it matured in? How old is it? For this reason, we will be running a series of educational events throughout May. My ideal outcome is for people to leave with a better understanding and an appreciation of Irish whiskey (and coee).

“Powers is regarded as the pinnacle of Irish whiskey and has maintained this reputation for over 200 years. We wanted to find an Irish Coffee Chain to partnerwith, who reflected the same values.

History, it’s said, has a habit of repeating itself. It’s not always a good thing but every now and then, a comeback is a thing of pure beauty. Enter Irish Whiskey. The rise, fall and rise again of our native spirit is well documented but Irish whiskey is now well and truly back in the spotlight.

Consumers today are more discerning and demanding than ever. They want brands that have a story to tell, that are crafted and nurtured, but that are also innovative and creative. Irish whiskey has stepped up to the challenge and this once traditional spirit has been reborn. The category is undergoing a revival and growing globally, bringing a whole new legion of fans along with it.

Today, Irish whiskey has a much broader appeal, largely thanks to bartenders bringing it to life in cocktails, inventive new serves and mixed drinks, creating a whole new generation of modern day whiskey enthusiasts. There are endless options when it comes to whiskey cocktails. Some classics – a Manhattan, Whiskey Sour or Old Fashioned. Don’t rule out the steadfast Irish Co…ee, it hasn’t become famous over the world for no reason. It’s been said that whiskey isn’t a drink, it’s a whole world. For the novice, Irish whiskey is a great place to start. Compared to its Scottish and American cousins, Irish whiskeys are very approachable and considered balanced in taste and aroma. They are not so extreme in certain flavours, such as peat-smoke from peat-kilned barley or heavily oaked notes from fresh casks, flavours that people newer to whiskey

WHISKEY FACTS DID YOU KNOW?

Irish whiskey is currently the fastest growing spirit category in the world.

IRISH WHISKEY gets a lot of its flavour from the casks in which it is aged . Many of these casks will have been seasoned with other drinks like bourbon or sherry .

The Irish method of whiskey distillation is di…erent to that of any other country. The quintessential style of Irish whiskey making is known as ‘pot still’ distillation . This is achieved by mashing a blend of both malted and unmalted barley . The liquid produced is then distilled in large traditional copper pot stills . The resulting whiskey is characterised by rich , complex flavours and a creamy mouthfeel .

To meet the legal definition of Irish

Spirits containing two OR MORE types of Irish whiskey are referred to as ‘blended’ Irish Whiskey.

Whiskey, spirits must be distilled and aged in Ireland . It MUST be aged in wooden casks for at least three years .

In Ireland whiskey is spelt with an ‘e’ before the ‘y’. This spelling was originally introduced by Dublin Distillers as a way of differentiating their whiskey from their country cousins. Whiskey or Whisky?

A portion of whiskey evaporates during the process of maturation. This is known as the ‘Angel’s Share’. Midleton Distillery estimates that they lose over 30,000 bottles worth of whiskey per day through the ‘Angel’s Share’.

The word ‘whiskey’ actually comes from the Irish ‘uisce beatha’ , which originates from the Latin ‘aqua vitae’ meaning ‘water of life’ .

A SHOT OF WHISKEY

In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a “shot” of whiskey.

Scotch whisky is usually distilled twice and Irish whiskey generally three times. For this reason, the Irish claim their whiskey is a smoother and purer whiskey. Do you agree?

Using the signature Powers Pot Still distillate, this whiskey has been matured mainly in American oak barrels with a subtle inclusion of first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. FINISH: Long and wonderfully complex with notes of honey and spice. STYLE: Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey ABV: 46% NOSE: Crisp herbal notes with touches of nutmeg, fig and black pepper corns. POWERS SIGNATURE RELEASE

Powers John’s Lane Release is a single pot still whiskey that celebrates the origin of the Powers Whiskey tradition and provides a glimpse of the style that made Powers famous. The distillate has been matured for no less than 12 years, mainly in American oak casks with a small inclusion of Iberian oak for balance and complexity and then married to create the distinctive honey and spice flavour of Powers. STYLE: Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey ABV: 46% NOSE: An abundance of earthy aromas, leather, tobacco with layers of charred wood, dark chocolate and treacle to™ee. TASTE: Full-bodied spice front followed by vanilla, honey and dried apricot. FINISH: Lingering honey sweetness on toasted oak. POWERS JOHN’S LANE RELEASE

Powers Three Swallow Release is the 21st century embodiment of the traditional pure pot still whiskey style that made Powers famous around the world. Three Swallow features all the singular characteristics of traditional Irish single pot still whiskey – robust, spicy and powerful. It is matured primarily in American bourbon barrels where these characteristics are amplified and complemented with strong wood character. Marrying with a small sherry-aged component gives Powers Three Swallow Release balance and finesse. STYLE: Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey ABV: 40% NOSE: Crisp barley and spice. Ripe banana and citrus with a hint of marzipan TASTE: Rich and mouth coating with green apple, citrus and toasted oak. FINISH: Sweet with rich pot still spice leads to sweet vanilla and a hint of Oloroso sherry.

Powers Gold Label is a complex spice and honeyed taste experience. Every drop is triple- distilled, with more cut from the top and tail of the second and third pot still charges. This means only the purest heart of the distillate is captured. This is then left to mature in select American oak casks, which allow our distillate-driven style to shine. Powers Gold Label is blended with the finest grain whiskey, also exclusively matured in American oak casks. Finally, a proprietary Powers production technique enables a non-chill filtration at 40% ABV – unique amongst Irish whiskey. STYLE: Blend of single pot still and grain Irish whiskey ABV: 40% NOSE: Cinnamon, clove oil and white pepper in balance with russet apples and ripe pears, on a background of charred oak. TASTE: Cinnamon, green peppers and a touch of nutmeg combined with orchard fruits, vanilla and toasted oak. All laid upon a crisp barley core. FINISH: Long pot still oils and spices slowly fade to rich barley and toasted wood.

WHAT’S YOUR COFFEE TYPE?

what is aN affogatos?

Ca è Americano You can make this type of coee quite simply by adding hot water to a shot of espresso coee. It has been said that American soldiers during the Second World War would make this type of coee to make their beverages last longer. It was then (apparently) adopted by American baristas after the war. Café Latte (or Café au lait) A fairly popular option for coee drinkers, a latte consists steamed (or scolded) milk and a single shot of coee. Cappuccino Possibly the most popular type of coee in the world, a cappuccino consists of three layers (kind of like a cake). The first is a shot of espresso, then a shot of steamed milk, and finally the barista adds a layer of frothed, foamy milk. This final layer can also be topped with chocolate shavings or powder. Traditionally, Italians would consume this type of coee at breakfast. Espresso To make an espresso, shoot boiling water under high pressure through

finely ground up coee beans and then pour into a tiny mug. Sounds simple right? Well, it’s surprisingly di‹cult to master. Espressos are the purest coee experience you can get. Flat White Originated in New Zealand and Australia. For a flat white, the steamed milk from the bottom of the jug (which is usually not so frothy, but rather creamy) is poured over a shot of espresso. Macchiato A macchiato is a shot of espresso which is then topped o with foamed milk dashed directly into the cup. Although it may sound similar to a cappuccino, it’s usually stronger as there’s no steamed milk added and it’s also smaller, usually served in an expresso sized cup. Mochaccino A ‘mocha’ is just a latte with added chocolate powder or syrup, as well as sometimes being topped with whipped cream. If anything, this is a good entry level coee – living in the worlds between the childlike hot chocolate and the adult café latte.

AFFOGATOS AREN’T A COFFEE AT ALL REALLY, AS THEY’RE A SHOT OF ESPRESSO POURED OVER A DESERT (USUALLY ICE CREAM). THAT DOESN’T MAKE THEM ANY LESS DELICIOUS THOUGH.

ON SOLID GROUND FOR A GREENER FUTURE

Local scaled artisan co ee chain Ground Espresso Bars has doubled-down on its ethical duties by launching a pioneering initiative - ‘Reuse at Ground’ – which aims to encourage members of the public across Northern Ireland to change their habits and reduce waste by o ering an unprecedented 50p o all hot drinks when a reusable cup is used. Ground is the first coee chain in Northern Ireland to oer this level of incentivetocustomersandthecompany is also in the process of phasing out the use of plastic straws, which will be replaced with paper straws in all 24 stores. It is also trialling new fully recyclable cups within selected stores. The ‘Reuse at Ground’ initiative comes on the back of recent statistics highlighting that over 2.5 billion disposable coee cups are thrown away in the UK each year, with less than 1% of these currently being recycled due to the lack of recycling facilities in the UK that can fully separate the materials found in a coee cup. Darren Gardiner, Co-Founder, Ground Espresso Bars said, “We are really pleased to be launching our ‘Reuse at Ground’ initiative, which we hope will help change customer habits by encouraging more people to use a reusable cup. As a company we take our responsibility to the environment and the local community very seriously and through this initiative we want to ensure that our customers feel rewarded for playing their part in helping the environment and reducing wastage.” “Whether you order your coee to go five times a month or are a more

frequent consumer of up to 15 times a month, using a reusable cup could have a significant impact and in just one year a coee drinker could reduce waste by around 60 to 180 cups respectively,” adds Darren. This latest initiative from Ground complements the company’s responsible business initiatives in recent years which have included

support of the Growing Livelihoods project with Cloughmills Community Action Team, where spent coee grounds were used to cultivate a crop of mushrooms for use by the local community, and a unique partnership with the company’s coee growers in Honduras which involved the construction of a new education hub for children and young people in the community.
