Connecting Ideas: Review the terms square, triangle, rectangle by asking students to point at then in practice problem 6 on page 179. Stress that each shape represents the same number. The visual representation should be a good scaffold for students but numbers may need to be added for additional support. Repeat the same process with #7. This visual strategy could be used whenever students are connecting addition to subtraction and work with fact families. Analyze Student Work : Print a copy of Linda and Ben’s work and have students decide which strategy and how it was used.
