Differentiation in Action

Connecting Multiple Representations For Convince Me!, help students understand why only the tens digit changes when you subtract 10 from 76 by having students model 76 − 10 with a hundred chart, blocks, and a ten-frame. Divide the class into three teams and assign each team one of the strategies. Have students on each team draw a picture to show the problem. Then have a team representative present his or her reasoning to the class, with other students on the same team building on the representative’s explanation. Guide students to focus on the fact that an entire ten block, row, or ten-frame is involved, but no ones are touched.

Using Multiple Representations: On the Topic Performance Task student workbook page 488 problem #5 , have students model the math to show how many vegetables Lee bought using all the tools listed in the box below the problem. Additionally, have the students justify which tool is the best and why.
