Differentiation in Action

Demonstration : Use a demonstration to relate it to the idea of fairness. Give two volunteers a piece of paper or a disc of clay and ask the class to imagine that it is a tasty treat. Pretend that you are going to divide it in a way that is not fair (see below), and ask: “Are both of you happy if you share the treat like this? Is this fair?” Ask the volunteers to divide the treat between themselves in a way that is fair. Invite suggestions from the class and discuss how to be sure each person gets the same amount.

Skill Building

Display “equal shares = fair shares” as a reminder of the meaning. “Are both of you happy if you share the treat like this? Is this fair?
