Speak Out February 2018

Committed to CPD

JILL CROSS REFLECTS ON OVER 30 YEARS OF SERVICE ON THE QUEENSLAND CPD COMMITTEE.

I can’t believe it is thirty plus years that I have been a member of the Professional Development Committee. It does not seem eons ago that I graduated from the University of Queensland and obtained a Masters degree from Western Washington State University, USA. Over this time there has been a huge amount of change in our profession. We are no longer expected to work in broom closets, or hospital examination rooms with a large bed taking up most of the available space. Most organisations with a speech pathology department have dedicated rooms in which to treat clients and we are regarded as a valuable part of an organisation. With this change have also come other changes, specifically, in the content and delivery of our professional development. I remember when we started our video teleconferencing which at the time was innovative but out of date now. Now we have a variety of formats to choose from to further our knowledge which has certainly helped those clinicians working outside of major centres. With the surge in quality research in Australia and around the world the content of the workshops has led to greater skills in assessment and treatment techniques. Where once we relied on overseas speakers for our national tours and workshops, now we have homegrown presenters who are internationally recognised.

Professional development, however, cannot do without committee members, portfolio leaders and in particular paid professional development coordinators. The Queensland committee has had a number of coordinators who have been outstanding and

none more so than Tricia Chardon who

has kept the wheels of our committee turning smoothly and made being

a committee member enjoyable and fulfilling. It has been an interesting and exciting ride and a privilege to have served with my colleagues on this committee for so long.
