Commodores Comments…

WOW – that’s the first word that comes to mind to describe Haul Out weekend and for that matter this entire year at NCYC. The participation, comradery, volunteerism and great times have been amazing. As your Commodore, I can’t thank you all enough for your help and friendship. It has been an experience Renee and I will never forget. Congratulations to our new Rear Commodore Randy Pagel. Rest assured I will always be available to help in any way I can when you become Commodore. Congratulations to Bill Callahan, Scott Greenfelder, and Tom Martin, our newly elected board members. We will appoint a director to fulfill the final year remaining for Randy Pagel’s vacant director position for 2016 at our next board meeting. Excellent Haul Out feast Pat and Russ!!! Thank You for jumping in again this year with the help of Brian & Lori, Jill, Cathy and the rest of your crew. Thank You to Kim Miedema, Nancy Carroll, Ron Kemp, Ed Romatz, Glen & Sheila Nixon, Leslie Leitch, Renee and Andy McEvoy for all the fantastic decorations, the clubhouse and grounds looked amazing. Thank you Mary Marini and your First Mates crew for a well-executed annual First Mates Haul out breakfast Sunday morning. Thank you to Fleet Captains P/C Rick and Jill for all of your hard work and the good times you provided this year. We have a lot of good memories to add to our collection for the year. I would like to thank everyone who participated in and planned this year’s activities. It’s not an easy task and it takes a lot of time, planning and manpower to pull it off. More importantly it takes participation from the membership to make them successful. We need your continued support and participation for these events every year.

It is now time to close up the club for the winter. Please plan on attending our fall work parties on Saturday, October 10 th and Saturday, October 17 th . If you haven’t fulfilled your 4 hour work requirement, make sure you come out as the next two weekends are your last chance to avoid being billed $200. Please look for direction from our Harbor and Grounds director Don Reiss and our Clubhouse director P/C Hugh Vestal. We meet in the club parking lot at 9:00 A.M. I look forward to seeing many of you at the General Membership meeting on November 14th at Barrister Gardens. We will hear the latest Forward Planning committee report from R/C Pat Carroll and V/C Chuck Stroh will present the 2016 budget. As we move into the fall, the planning for the Commodore’s Ball is in full swing. The Ball will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016. Please mark the date on your calendar to assure your ability to attend.

Thanks for a great year - Commodore Brian McEvoy

Vice Commodores Comments…

Well we did it again…….. Haul out is over and it was another highly successful year at North Channel Yacht Club!!!! The election results are in and we have a great new set of leaders for the Flag and Board of Directors to continue the work of running the club. Congratulations to Randy Pagel as our Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan, Scott Greenfelder, and Tom Martin as Directors. I hope that those that were not elected this year remember that they are greatly needed and will be willing to go for it again next year. This is the time of year that I reflect on the boating season just completed. I realize how many members so unselfishly volunteered their time to keep the club the awesome place that it is. We all need to take the time to thank all of the Week Managers, Weekend OD’s, event leaders, and all the support that those people had to make the efforts look so easy and so seamless. Not to mention the members that volunteer to participate on the several committees that it takes to ensure the club runs smoothly. I am proud to have served under Commodore Brian McEvoy and with the 2015 Flag and Directors. I feel that the team did a great job moving the club forward positioning ourselves for the future. I can assure you that each and every person in the Boardroom put the club and our membership’s needs ahead of their own while making the many decisions in front of them each month. Don’t forget the work parties. Bring a fellow member and work as a team to close her up for the year. Commodore Brian McEvoy will start the work of rebuilding the bar as part of the two closing week work parties. So come join us to be sure we are ready for the winter months. See you at the work parties, V/C Chuck Stroh

Get the retirement youwant.

It’s never too soon to start planning.

Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn those dreams into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them. That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help your money work long enough and hard enough to fund the retirement you envision. LIFEWELLPLANNED. Contact me to get started.

Rear Commodores Comments…

It’s hard to believe we have only one more weekend left to enjoy our club for the 2015 boating season. Unfortunately, when we are enjoying ourselves, the time always flies by too fast. I guess that’s how this season at the club can be described, a lot of fun but way too short. This last weekend is full of activities, the most important is this years election. Please make sure you fill your ballot out correctly and turn it in on time. Make sure your voice is heard and cast your vote for the members who will continue to work towards improving our club. Remember that running for the board and voting are the best ways to insure that your views and opinions are heard. Also, don’t miss the Haul Out party and Big Ray and the Motor City Kings. This is one band you will really enjoy. After this weekend we start the sad task of closing down the clubhouse for the winter. If you are still in need of putting in your hours for a work party, you only have two more chances, October 12 th and 19 th . Come out and lend a hand, there’s always plenty to do and you won’t regret it. RC Pat

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…

We have two members on the sick call list, Patti Archibald and Burt Johansson. Patti is back home from the hospital. She is recuperating…. working to get stronger. Burt is also at home from the hospital recovering from a fall that re-injured his ankle. Please make contact by calls or cards letting them know that you are thinking of them.

P/C Paul Jarvis’ daughter-in-law, Tammie, passed away on September 9 th . Please remember P/C Paul, Cathy and their family during this difficult time in their life. The following poem falls right into the Autumn season. “Fall Is Here”

Fall is here with skies bright blue Brilliantly colored leaves in view. One cannot help but look with wonder To see the Master Painter’s splendor. There’s beauty in the Fall, you see, We all enjoy whether eighty or three. The orange of the pumpkin The corn shucks turned brown The yellow, the russet, Red leaves tumbling down. Then listen, bend your ear near And hear the sounds this time of year, The happy laughter the children make. Yes, it’s Fall, warm weather’s last fling. Enjoy the days, It’s a long time ‘til Spring. The snap and crackle Of the leaves you rake

Members often go out of their way to help our Club or one another – doing what needs to be done, above and beyond! This is your chance as membership to issue them a quick Thank You and recognize them for their good efforts. If you wish to offer any members a Hy-Five, please email the

The First Mates greatly appreciate the work done by Don Shepperson & Chris Strzyzewski to fix the Boutique small window…..Marie Pepin

Darryl Campbell wanted to thank Terry Steinmacher for putting in 23 hours on his OD weekend, because he had several people that did not show up. Also he wanted to give Ron Draper a "Hy-Five" for installing the mounts for the windows on Fin #3. Also, A "Hy- Five" was sent out to Chris Strzyzewski for his help in all of the extra things that he did while he was a week day manager. Repairing the plumbing under the clubhouse,

identifying the problem and fixing. Labor Day Week Manager team:

No one was scheduled to manage the club the week before Labor Day. When Kim Miedema asked, this team stepped up at the last minute and made it happen! Thanks for keeping the club house open on this critical week! Diane French and Ron and Jeannine Kemp. Even Ed Romatz came to help! The four of you are always there when we need you most! THANK YOU! And a Extra Special Hy-Five to Dick and Vicki Raymond! They had never managed before and wanted to learn. Wow! What a great job! They jumped in, read the manuals, worked hard and highly impressed the rest of the team. We trained a great asset to the OD management volunteer list when we asked you both! It is true, Many Hands make Light Work. We helped the club, had fun, and ate really good too! (Each person took a dinner, so we only had to cook once all week!)….Kim Miedema

Commodore’s Comments: Commodore, Brian McEvoy Welcome to our September General Membership Meeting. I would like to thank the membership for their attendance and participation so far this year. We only get 20 weeks a year up here so please continue to get involved, participate and use your club. We have had a lot of fun with more to come in the following 5 weeks. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for all of their time, support and hard work throughout the year. You always put what is good for the club as a whole above any personal agenda and I have enjoyed working with all of you this year. Following the directors reports summarizing our present situation, we will hear from those members who will be running for office for 2016. I want to thank all of the candidates for stepping up. Good luck to all. Vice Commodore, Chuck Stroh I would like to thank all of candidates for stepping up. You will be the ones that will help build our club for the future. Thank you to all of the people who stepped up to put on an event this year. It's been a very fun slate of new ideas mixed in with old favorites. Thank you to Brian and Renee for setting up a great calendar of events. We started the year with a $9,080 budget for profit on activities. Due to great participation from our members, as well as guest participation, we are well on the way to that goal with $8,745 year to date . Smoke on the Water, the golf outing and haul out will round out this year. Please participate and have fun! Clubhouse - PC Hugh Vestal PC Hugh stated that the air conditioning unit has helped in keeping the electricity bills in check. While we do pay for the air conditioning, the reduction in the fan usage has helped to keep the costs under control. PC Hugh also wanted to remind everyone that if you accidently drop something in the toilets to let someone know immediately, before it poses a problem. Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss Don wanted to thank all of the candidates that put their name on the ballot. He asked all of the membership to consider running for office in the future. We need everyone to step up and help the Club going forward.

The 2015 income numbers are $3,310 versus 2014 income numbers which were $2,850, up $460. We are also $871 under budget. Good luck to all of the candidates. The 'Hy-Fives' are a way for our members to recognize their fellow members when you see them do something above and beyond. Contact Brent Malik if you would like to nominate someone. They will be posted in the Beacon. Secretary – Randy Pagel We need bartenders and workers for next week, if anyone can help, please let me know. I will need pictures and bio's from all of the candidates to put in a fan out to the membership. If you need a picture, please see Kim Miedema. I would like to thank all the weekday managers for their help lugging the supplies to the island. Without them, the supplies job would be impossible. I would also like to thank the candidates for stepping up and I wish all of them the best of luck. I am looking forward to serving with any of them next year. The bar sales are up $5,000 at the end of July compared to 2014 Transportation – Darryl Campbell All the fins are running great. Our Fins have received updated safety signage, first aid kits and flares, not to mention scheduled preventative maintenance. Engine speed limiters have been installed in Fins #2 and #3 in an effort to extend longevity and limit unnecessary repairs resulting from abuse. I would like to thank Ron Draper for supplying and installing the mounts to store the Isenglas up and out of the way under the top of Fin 3. Also, thanks to Bert Skibinski for supplying the parts and repairing Fin# 2 coolant leak. Supplies –Ian Blackburn

Month of September: PC Tom and Judy McHugh

Good of the order: Darryl Campbell stated that 'no shows' for the work or pay weekend duties are a problem. We need people to work and the $50 per hour fine is not getting any more members to show up. He suggested we charge $20-30 per hour to hire people to work in place of the "no-shows" with the remaining funds to go to the club to handle administrative costs, this would solve the manpower problem. PC Bob Watson questioned on how will the workers payouts be handled. PC Cass Klapec commented that in the past we made sure that people understood that they need to work at the interview. Brian Malik also commented that new members need to understand that they must put in the hours not just pay.

Greg Criner reminded everyone that the Golf Outing is coming up in September. We need golfers to participate. Please let me know now so I can plan.

Our Safety Officer, Don Shepperson noted that there have been some close calls coming out of the harbor. Please remember to sound your horn when coming out of the harbor or passing through on the Robison. Don also reminded everyone to slow down when going across the North Channel in the Fin. We have had some complaints from our neighbors across the channel that our boats are making a wake. One more thing, please make sure that your power cords and lines are rolled up and not laying over the dock. Skip Schafer wondered how the kids jar was doing now that we have the POS system and a lot of people are using their cards to pay for drinks. It was noted that the kids jar is about the same. RC Pat Carroll wanted to let everyone know that the shuffle board tournament will continue again this year. The cost will be $20, with 1/2 going to the winners and 1/2 going to the Club. Judy McHugh wanted to everyone to know that she is still taking reservations for the "Smoke on the Water" dinner. Please see Judy if you are interested. Rana Shepperson is collecting cans for cancer again this year. She has raised $383 so far this year from cans on the island. If anyone has cans that they don't want to take back to the store let Rana know and she will pick them up. Let's kick cancer, one can at a time! Commodore’s Comments: Commodore, Brian McEvoy Thanks to all for coming tonight. We have a long meeting tonight with a lot of business to take care of, so we will take a break at 8:00. Please keep your reports brief and to the point. Thank you. Vice-Commodore’s Comments: Vice Commodore, Chuck Stroh I am disappointed with people not stepping up to run for office. We get great participation for the opening and closing of the club, but we need more people to step up and run for board positions. Please consider running for office. Rear-Commodore’s Comments: Rear Commodore, Pat Carroll In the August Beacon, I gave comments on safety. Please keep in mind that everyone needs to follow the rules. Please make sure that someone follows people back to their boats to make sure they get back safely. We have had some people fall in the water, luckily no one has been hurt so far. Financial Report Treasurer, Frank Corcoran Revenue for the month of July was $29,113 and expenses were $20,426, with a profit of $8,687. Year to date revenues of $242,381 are up $11,913 over last year; year to date expenses of $124,601 are up only $8,222 from this time last year. The increase in year to date revenues is primarily related to membership related revenues. Year to date profit as of July 31 stands at $117,780. The cash position increased $63,000 since the beginning of the year and stands at $154,000 at July 31, including $40,000 in the Cash Reserve account. The building loan continues to decline under scheduled amortization payments, with the remaining principal balance of $91,256 as of July 31. Correspondence: A thank you card was received from PC Denise Huntly for the plant for her recent surgery. A thank you card was received from Cindy Swan for the flowers for her recent surgery. A thank you card was received from Darlene Wallace for the flowers for the passing of Bill. Thank you cards were also received from PC Ardo Apigian and Marie Yowan. A letter from PC Bill Hendricks asking the board to make a decision on the effective date of membership. PC Bill also recommended that a spread sheet be created and added to the data base to make it easier for the nominating committee to recruit. Motion: Moved by Randy Pagel to have PC Bill Hendricks be the data base consultant. Seconded by Brian Malik. Motion Carried. Discussion was held on the effective date of membership. PC Rick Romatz will take it to the by- law committee for correct wording. A request was made from Harbor View Yacht Club requesting to come to the Club in 2016. VC Chuck Stroh will keep request until next year. Proposal from Thurston Dean for a covered patio on the harbor side of the building. A discussion was held on the feasibility of this project. It will be sent to the Forward Planning Committee for review. Activities - Kim Miedema Summer of 2015 has been beautiful and a fun one. But, as expected, July was not a huge revenue month. We totaled $718 in profit between the 4th of July, the Raft off and Keans. We are in great shape to meet our $9,080 goal though, with a year to date (8/12/15) total of $5,906. August began with a nice surprise of $700 for the Captains breakfast and $75 for Karaoke due to the great turnout. With the golf outing, smoke on the water and the beer bust coming up, we should make our goal. As always, thank everyone that has put on an event and participated in the events. It's all about the fun, and it's the more the merrier! I. CURRENT BUSINESS

Clubhouse - PC Hugh Vestal I am trying to evaluate the cost of the AC. It seems like it does not cost that much. The upstairs toilet has been plugged three times this year. If you have a problem with the toilet, please let someone know before it becomes a problem. The Health Inspector was here last week and with the help of many, we passed. Rebecca, our cleaning lady worked extra hard to ensure that we would pass this inspection. Motion: Moved by Randy Pagel to give Rebecca an extra $50.00 for all the extra work that she did. Seconded by Darryl Campbell. Motion Carried. Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss No report. Membership- Brian Malik We have two members in waiting. They are David Tye and Paul Urbano. To date we have 10 new boating members, 1new junior member. Currently we have 156 boating members, 26 non boating members, 49 seniors and 25 junior members. We have exceeded our 2015 budget by $4,225. Secretary – Randy Pagel Flowers were sent to Marie Yowan, PC Ardo Apigian and PC Bill Bauer. The By- Law committee approved the language for "Review VS Audit. By-Law clarification needed regarding 2 signatures on checks and debit cards. My recommendation would be not to touch this as it relates to By-Law changes. Supplies- Ian Blackburn The lemonade and the ice tea on the wand is priced at $1.00. It costs us the same price as pop, so I will change the price on the wand to .50. Transportation – Darryl Campbell All Fins are running well. We have made safety signage additions on both Fins 2 and 3 for adult life jackets, children's life jackets, life rings and first aid kit locations. Fin number 2 has had an rpm limiter installed in it to prevent engine damage and "accidental overdriving". Number 3 Fin will receive a limiter also. Publications- Brent Malik Amazon: legacy product link on our website is updated to the new 2015 link. The Club website is meeting the Amazon child directed policy.

A reminder, we now have a DSC (Digital Selective Calling ) system in place that allows the clubhouse and the Fins to communicate between them that "rings" the ship to shore radio rather than utilizing the old traditional hailing method. We have been showing interested members, OD's and week managers in an effort to utilize the system to our best advantage. Two carbon monoxide detectors have been installed, one in the hallway between the kitchen and the "ice maker room" and the other in the "refrigeration room" as a precaution against possible generator exhaust fumes. Fleet Captain - PC Rick Romatz The last rendezvous was great. Weather wise it was much better. We have 18 wells signed up for MacRay. Topic # 1 Nominating Committee: Chairperson, PC Don Vanover, PC Harley Burris, Al Durand, PC Bill Hendricks, PC Rick Romatz. The current slate is: Cash Reserve Committee, Ken Lipowski and Phillip Maniaci. Motion: Moved by PC Hugh Vestal to approve the Cash Reserve Committee candidates. Seconded by PC John Anderson. Motion Carried. Board of Directors: John Sweier, John Mantyk, Scott Greenfelder, and Bill Calahan. The committee is still working on the director list. Rear Commodore: Randy Pagel. The committee is still working on the list. A tentative meeting will be held on August 29, at 10 am to approve the final list. NEW BUSINESS

Topic #1 Treasurer Frank Corcoran reviewed each directors YTD actual VS their budget. All accounts look good.

Topic #2 Treasurer Frank also had a discussion showing a model of how to fund capital projects. He passed out a Power Point packet showing where the money comes from and where the money goes and how much is left for capital projects. Topic #3 - There is a problem with people not showing up for their work weekends. It is a huge problem for the OD when someone does not show up. It is up to the member to find someone to work their time in case they cannot fulfill that weekend. They also MUST contact the secretary to let them know about the change. The OD's must review their weekend workers, and not accept any member that is not on their list. Topic #4 A discussion was held on new member orientation. Motion: Moved by Randy Pagel to make new member orientations mandatory at a meeting before the Club opens. Seconded by PC Hugh Vestal. Motion Carried. Topic #5

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 7 of 8

PC Harley asked the Board to address the issue of who can stay in the managers apartment. A discussion was held. PC Rick Romatz will take it to the by-law committee to write the language for the Board to approve.

Good of the Order: Kim Miedema reviewed the verbiage of NCYC rules on the back of the dockage slips for incoming rendezvous. Discussion followed. Kim will send the slips to the printer this week. Kim reported on the Mi Boating Industries Association meeting: Larry and I took one for the team July 14th and attended the meeting that is required to get a significant discount through Hanover Insurance. It was very interesting. The association is fighting hard to keep the Ethanol out of marine fuel. Last month there was a hearing in Congress on the ethanol mandate. We should all contact our congress representatives to share how we feel. There was also a presentation on summer blend fuel vs winter blend. The government mandates pumps are changed in May and October. The owners of the pumps are fined significantly if they do not comply. The pump owners want to change this mandate because otherwise tanks have to be drained or be fined in June. An interesting observation is that if we fill up for winter storage in October, we are putting in winter blend to run the following summer. Another thing to write to your congressman about! Hanover gave a presentation on keeping insurance losses down. There was a couple items that are worth noting. 1) All buildings should have a clear emergency plan made ahead of a disaster on how to get out of a burning building. 2) We should all have insurance phone numbers readily available in case of an issue so the loss is handled properly. (Should we add this to the OD book?) 3) They suggested garbage cans should be metal with metal lids. If something should start fire in the can, the top would snuff it out before it got out of control. I thought of our patio area with the cigarette butts. The example given was rags from solvents, and we may have that by the garage? Perhaps we should change these cans out? It's a simple thing that makes sense. PC Ken Smith stated that there should be a way for the Managers and OD's to identify who paid and for how long for the incoming rendezvous. Discussion followed. Member of the Month: RC Pat Carroll nominated Tom and Judy McHugh for members of the month. RC Pat Carroll to write the article. Motion: Moved by RC Pat Carroll to accept the nomination. Seconded by PC Hugh Vestal. Motion Carried.
