What they are? Almost 95% of new vehicles are fitted with a cabin air filter, whether or not they have air-conditioning. Cabin air filters are intended to keep the air quality inside the car as fresh as possible. There are two types of Cabin Filters: Standard Pollen Filter Pollen filters work to remove pollen particles from the outside air before it’s passed into the cabin via the air conditioning or heater system. Pollen cabin air filters stop all particles smaller than 1 micron, such as bacteria, pollen, and exhaust gases. This effect captures even the smallest allergenic particles, including those that may not be stopped by nasal hairs or the mucus in the upper respiratory tract, and that could enter the lungs provoking asthma and allergies. Activated Carbon Filter Carbon filters do more than standard pollen filter and they also stop odours, from entering the vehicle cabin. The filter medium used consists of three layers: an active carbon layer placed between two layers of non-woven fibres. This special structure reduces the concentration of noxious and odorous gases that can provoke headaches and coughing. There is one area where standard filters fall a bit short, and that is when they are forced to deal with atmospheric pollutants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. These gases can become quite concentrated on stretches of road that see bumper-to-bumper traffic, and in some cases the level of CO2 inside a vehicle can be three times as high as the environmental level, due to the concentrating effects of the passenger compartment ventilation system and the lack of protection afforded by a standard filter. Why is it important to change them as part of a standard service? Many garages do not realize that up to 75% of car climate problems are in fact caused by a blocked cabin air filter; there is no need to interfere with the Air Conditioning system in order to replace the cabin air filter. Upgrading is quite straightforward: simply replace a particle filter with an activated carbon filter. It is recommended that workshop professionals explain the importance and benefits of the cabin filter for the protection of all vehicle occupants which should enhance sales of this lucrative service item. The cabin filter should be replaced annually, vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing it every 12,000 miles. Cabin filters create a pleasant and healthy atmosphere inside the car. Particularly for children, people with allergies

and asthmatics, protecting the vehicle occupants is of paramount importance. Cabin air filters represent a great opportunity to upsell an important service part.
