Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics Tom Iannacone begins his second year as the University of San Diego director of athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search for a successor to Rev. Patrick Cahill. The 47-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first year. His accomplishments at USO include an ongoing internal reorganization of the athletic department, plus im- provements in the major areas of new personnel, additional scholarship assistance and facilities improvements. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an impressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholar- ships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring

of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several ECAC Metro Conference committees, most notably the committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Ridgefield, Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3,600, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5,800. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing, crew, yoga, karate, surfing, modern dance, backpacking, and ballet. USD's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, football, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, crew and tennis. In women's intercollegiate sports, USD fields programs in basketball, cross-country, crew, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

Head Coach Brian Fogarty The 1989 season will mark the seventh year for Brian Fogarty at USD. There have been many positive changes during that time. The most important being a shift to primarily high school recruiting. The past six recruiting years have included the largest and most talented freshman classes in 16 years of Division Ill football at USD. Brian and his staff feel this provides for a more consistent program. Last year's squad finished with a record of 5-4. That marked the second straight year the Toreros turned in a winning season-USO finished the 1987 campaign 6-3-1 and ranked 20th in the nation in NCAA Division Ill football. With approximately 50 returning lettermen for the 1989 season, the immediate future of Torero football looks very bright. Brian's six year record at USD is 26-31-2. Before coming to USD, Brian coached at St. Francis High School in La Canada, California where he was head coach for four years and an assistant coach for nine years prior. As head coach his record was 28-18-2 and his teams made the playoffs all four years. This season Brian will also be the offensive coordinator and coach the offensive line. Brian and his wife Vicki have four children, Bridgit, Joe, Colleen and Megan.

KEVIN McGARRY Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Kevin begins his 12th season on the USD staff. This will be his 9th year as the defensive coordinator. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Kevin is also responsible for recruiting and is the liaison for the Alumni Club. Kevin was a standout player at USD as well. He was co-defensive player of the year in 1977. He also is a graduate of USD's School of Education with a master's degree in Educational Administration. TIM ODER Defensive Line Tim will be entering his 4th season with the Toreros. A graduate of Northern Arizona University where he played football, Tim has also coached at the high school and college level prior to coming to USD. Tim is also on the faculty at Fallbrook High School where he is a history teacher and the Head Track Coach. Last year's team won the San Diego Section CIFTrack and Field Championship and Tim was chosen as CIF Coach of the Year.

LARRY CAUDILLO

Special Teams Coordinator and Inside Linebackers Larry is starting his 15th season on the USD football staff. Larry is moving back to the defensive side of the ball after a two year stint as the offensive coordinator. Along with coaching the inside linebackers, Larry will be in charge of Torero special teams. Larry played football and baseball for USD in the early 1970s and during the spring he is the women's softball coach. MIKE RISH Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks Mike is beginning his 6th season as the receiver coach for the Toreros. Mike played for USD from 1979-83 and is the all-time career leader in receptions, T.D.s, and receiving yardage. Mike graduated from USD with an accounting degree and is working full-time as a mortgage banking executive. This is Ken's first year on the USD coaching staff, although e is no stranger to the program. Ken just finished a very successful career for the Toreros starting at wide receiver for the last four seasons. Ken was also a very talented punt and kick returner, and was selected Special Teams Player of the Year in 1988. Ken has just completed his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and is currently enrolled in the USD graduate school of education. ERNIE MONFILETTO Offensive Line Ernie comes to the USD staff after spending the previous four seasons playing against the Toreros. A four year starter for Menlo College at offensive guard, he will be assisting Coach Fogarty with the offensive line. Ernie received his B.A. in Humanities with a concentration in History. He plans to pursue a Master's degree in Education beginning this fall. KEN ZAMPESE Defensive Backs

Jack is in his 5th season at USD. Jack, a very good teacher of fundamentals, will be working with the outside linebackers. A San Diego native, Jack graduated from USD in 1979 with a B.A. in Social Science. He has an extensive background in high school coaching in football and baseball. He presently works full-time for

Steve joins the USD staff after spending 2 years as an under- graduate assistant coach at San Jose State University, where he just completed his degree in English. Along with his duties as running back coach, Steve will also be in charge of all the equipment for the football program. 1989 TORERO FOOTBALL PROFILE

Six years ago, a goal was set by the new football staff to develop a foot- ball program that was nationally recognized-and to do so while reflect- ing the philosophy and values of the university. In order to achieve this goal, it is important that "true" student-athletes must be attracted to the university. Not only must they be good football players, but good students as well. The USD football program is part of the NCAA division Ill, which means they are nonscholarship. The philosophy of division Ill places the emphasis on academics first, with athletics being a part of the educational process. This does not make the football any less competitive or intense. Many great athletes who somehow "didn't measure up to the division I standards," find themselves at division Ill programs. This makes for an exciting brand of football that is played with the same intensity and enthusiasm that you find at the "major college" programs. The USD football program has seen a tremendous growth over the last six years. The quality of its players has risen steadily both academically and athletically. The minimum requirements for incoming students are 3.0 GPA's with a 900 SAT, and many of the current USD players were highly honored student-athletes at their high schools. This combination makes USD football an attractive opportunity for the serious student who is look- ing to get a good education as well as participating on an outstanding football team.

DB Darryl Jackson

The major recruiting emphasis is on high school seniors. This is a departure from the previous philosophy which depended heavily on transfers. To develop the consistency needed to be successful every year, players should be part of the program for four years. Although this has been a slow and sometimes painful process, you can't argue with the end result. National and regional rankings over the last two seasons, along with four Academic All-Americans the past three years, are just a few of the bench marks that point to how far this program has come. The team GPA of 2.8 indicates that our players are successful in the classroom as well. In 1988 the Toreros moved from the comfortable confines of their " I" formation on offense and switched to the Wing-T This offense relies heavily on misdirection. The effect this has had on opposing defenses has been more than the Toreros had hoped for. The best part of the change is that it takes advantage of the strengths of USD's personnel. With 7 offensive starters returning from last year's 5-4 team, the Toreros are very optimistic for the 1989 season. The offensive line should be a Torero strength as they return senior Mark Garcia and junior Ray Smith at the tackles and sophomore Gene Fontana at center. Seniors Neal Curry and Jeff Carpenter both started at times at the guard position. USD also returns an abundance of quality backs and receivers. All-America candidate Todd Jackson, USD's 1988 offensive player of the year, returns for his senior year. Todd led USD with 611 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Running backs Todd Whitley, Ty Barksdale and Charlie Taumoepeau will all get their share of carries. Senior Sam McDermott and junior Ken Jones are the top returning receivers while junior Mike Hintze and sophomore Brad Leonard will battle for the tight end position. The Toreros return all four quarterbacks, however, the ball should be in the hands of either senior Doug Piper or junior Brendan Murphy. The above players will be the main ingredients for continued success in 1989. They will be called upon to provide the rest of the Torero offense with the leadership necessary to be successful in 1989. Over the last few seasons, USD has established itself as one of the top defenses in division Ill, finishing among the nation's best in three defensive categories. Last year saw the Toreros ranked nationally in rushing and total defense, setting a new school record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a season (663). The USD defense returns only four starters from last year's squad, but that doesn't mean the cupboard is bare. The Toreros have a group of many fine players who received plenty of playing time last year as key backups. They will be ready to step in and take the turn of being part of this nationally recognized defense.

All-America candidate Dave Dunn, a senior defensive lineman, and last year's team captain, will be back for his final season. He set a school record last year by recording 12 quarterback sacks. The inspirational leader of the defense, Dave will be taking charge of a young but talented group of players. Other returning starters include junior DB Darryl Jackson and senior OLB Don Macinnes. Other experienced returners include senior Mark Crisci (DB), sophomore Greg Frinell Frinell (DB), senior Matt Scholl (moving from DB to LB), and sophomores Lenny Territo (OLB) and Dan Chandler (ILB). The punting chores belong to junior John Gillis. John returns for his 3rd season as the starting punter after averaging 34.4 yards last season. Jim Morrison will handle the field goal and kicking duties while sophomore Dave Bergmann will help with kicking. 1989 is the year when the Toreros hope to put it all together and reach their goal of going to the NCAA playoffs. But USD has to deal with a very difficult schedule which includes two division 11 opponents as well as the teams that comprise the always tough SCIAC Conference. The future looks very bright for USD and 1989 should be a very good year for the Toreros. 8

TOREROS HOST MENLO COLLEGE IN SEASON FINALE ... HOMECOMING GAME GAME INFORMATION: face visiting Menlo College - it is USD's annual homecoming game . LAST WEEK : The Toreros had a bye last week after they were handed a 51-3 loss by UC Santa Barbara on October 28th. Menlo College faced UCSB this past weekend and dropped a 59-0 decision to the Gauchos. THE COACHES : USD head coach Brian Fogarty, assured of his third straight winning season, has a 6-2 record this season and a career mark of 32-33-2 over 7 seasons. Menlo's Ray Solari is 3-5 this season and 21-14 since the Oaks went to Division III in 1986. Now in his 18th season with Menlo (they were a Junior College prior to '86) Solari is 95-74-6 . THE SERIES : The Toreros have yet to beat the Oaks on the field - losing 34- 8 in 1986, 17-15 in 1987 and 18-17 in 1988 . . . last year's game goes down as a win for the Toreros after Menlo forfeited due to ineligible players. In 1987 Menlo went to the NCAA playoffs after beating USD at Torero Stadium in USD's annual homecoming game. SENIORS SAY GOODBYE: The Toreros will have fourteen seniors suiting up for their last game . They are WR Sam McDermott, OL Neal Curry, QB Doug Piper, OL Mark Garcia, RB Todd Whitley, RB Todd Jackson, OL Jeff Carpenter, DB Danny Means, DL Torn McGee, NG Dave Dunn, LB Don Maclnnes, DL Scott Slykas, LB Matt Scholl, and DB Mark Crisci . USD's best finish under current coach Brian Fogarty was in 1987 when they finished 6-3-1 and ranked 20th in NCAA Division III polls . . . the Toreros fine season can be attributed to a total team effort ... leading the offense all season has been senior FB Todd Jackson (854 yards on 159 carries for 6 TD's) . .. needing 31 yards to become USD's all - time rusher in yards gained, Todd rushed for 46 against UCSB - his 2,026 yards tops the mark set by Joe Henry {2,011 in 1977-81) . .. sophomore kicker Dave Bergmann extended his own USD single season field goal record - making his 13th against UCSB . . . he is now 13-17 on the year and is the team's scoring leader with 59 points ... return specialist Greg Frinell is averaging 32 . 4 yards a kickoff return and 13.0 yards a punt return ... defensively the Toreros have been paced by LB Lenny Territo (70 tackles), CB Darryl Jackson (58 tackles), DB Darby Barrett (52 tackles) and NG Dave Dunn (48) . MENLO: This past weekend the Oaks were manhandled by UC Santa Barbara 59-0 . . . USCB outgained Menlo 612 yards to 77 ... Menlo's three wins are against Occidental (16-14), Claremont (10-8) and Azusa (40-28) . . . their losses are against Sonoma State (42-6), Humboldt State (67-7), San Francisco State (20- 14), St. Mary's (35-0) and Santa Barbara (59-0) . .. last Saturday's loss was Menlo's first against a Div. III opponent since they lost their NCAA playoff game against Central, IA (17-0) ... USO TORERO STADIUM USO Torero Stadium was built in 1955, to provide stu- dents the opportunity to play intercollegiate football and other outdoor sports. Set in a natural bowl, the stadium has 4,000 permanent seats located behind the home side of the field. The seats are set in cement and consist of aluminum bleachers. Thanks to the National Football League, USO received a new field in 1987, consisting of Santa Ana Bermuda grass, along with many improvements to the fieldhouse. Torero Stadium was the practice site for the Washington Redskins, the 1988 Super Bowl Champions. There is a four-foot wall surrounding the playing surface that was built in 1976, in order to keep the field free from potential mud slides. At the open end of the stadium is the scoreboard, which was generously donated by the Pepsi Cola Bottling Com- pany of San Diego. Located above the stands are the restrooms, the football office, the men's locker room and the press box. The University of San Diego hopes you enjoy your visit to the USO Torero Stadium and that you will be back soon.
