INDUSTRY UPDATE GAMING

Placing Bets on Disruptive Technology by Brandon Loeschner, CPA, CISA, CGMA

A ccording to Clayton M. Christensen, a Harvard Business School professor, disruptive technology is a new emerging technology that unexpectedly displaces an established one. Within the gaming industry, disruptions are significantly impacting the industry’s protocols and procedures. Why the Gaming Industry Should Take Notice Customers’ expectations are changing and the slots of today are unimaginative and outdated, according Rob Tercek, keynote speaker at Innovation Day in Las Vegas in May.

He further explained, “the games on smartphones have the ability to provide a much more entertaining experience than slot and skill-based video gaming machines found on Las Vegas floors and that when it comes to creating the casino of the future, the industry is severely lacking.” Tercek encourages the industry to rethink every aspect of slot machine presentation — formats, play styles, device locations, screens, presentation, player interaction, connectivity and sharing and social connections. This kind of tough talk is expected from one of the most influential players in new media and a world renowned creator of interactive content.
