Did You Know???

CTC provides free transportation for emergency medical and public safety trips. We donate tickets to the Chebeague Island Council to support its program of free transportation for those traveling for ongoing medical treatments. We also provide free transportation and parking at our Route 1 lot for people traveling on the day of a funeral or memorial service for someone being interred on Chebeague Island. The service must be registered with the CTC Office in advance . The cost to provide these donated community services is close to $60,000 annually! In 2024, the Recompense Fund helped support these programs with a contribution of $3,675. We are proud to be able to continue to support our Island community!

Happy Birthday to the Islander! On April 25, 1985 our workhorse of a ferry was launched by Washburn & Doughty in East Boothbay. This boat screams nostalgia for so many island visitors and feels like home to the residents of Chebeague. Today the Islander is our backup ferry, but is still one capable vessel.

Thanks to the generosity of the Casco Bay Island Association, The Recompense Fund will be able to boost its 2025 total grant giving to Chebeague nonprofits by between $9,000 and $11,000. In giving this one-time contribution, the association asked that Recompense distribute the entire sum this year. The island association, which has closed down after 70 years of serving island communities, was founded in 1954 to address

pollution in Casco Bay, rotting wharves and to improve ferry service. But membership had shrunk, in large part because of the success of islands’ nonprofits in taking up these issues. At Recompense, we continue to carefully grow our endowment while remaining committed to annual grants in support of Chebeague nonprofits. In the past decade, Recompense has distributed $450,000 to nonprofits, and we are pleased to be able to continue increasing the amount we make in grants each year. While most endowments adhere to a 4% spending rule, Recompense grants range from 5-6% of the endowment. Recompense has also expanded its grant-giving policies to include operation costs, to reflect the changing needs of the island nonprofits. Recompense strives to remain a long-term, steady source of help to island nonprofits working to keep the community healthy and thriving. Please go to https://www.recompensefund.com for detailed information on grant applications, annual reports and profiles of island nonprofits. This year’s deadline for grant submissions is April 15. The board will confirm grant awards by the end of May.

Affordable Housing Update Have you seen the modular boxes lining School House Road? While winter weather and ice build up at the Stone Pier delayed the barging of modular boxes for the new duplex, the boxes are here! Our next step is having the set crew and their equipment come to Chebeague which will take place later this spring, once the road postings are taken down. Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities Do you enjoy painting or landscaping work? We are looking for volunteers to help with a few projects to help get the duplex ready for move in. Email us at admin@cicachebeague.org if you are interested in helping us with a project or two. Interested in applying to rent one of the new units? Be on the lookout for information regarding how and when to apply for renting the new units. As long as our timeline holds for the remainder of the project, our hope is to have tenants moving into the duplex this summer!
