synchronicities you get. Cherry lived next door with her mum and dad. She said she was going to be moving out only it could take quite a while to save up the deposit for a flatshare. She said she couldn’t wait to get out actually. I knew the feeling. She was a beauty, Cherry, and I have to confess I sometimes had this fantasy about her and me getting it together and the two of us running off somewhere. Most nights, in fact. I’d be lying in bed and ten to one I wouldn’t be able to sleep and I’d come over in a bit of a sweat imagining Cherry lying in the bed with me. But it was not a good fantasy because I felt bad all the time I pictured her there. I suffered because she was too beautiful. Her perfect oval face and
perfect oval eyes.
She was perfect in every way imaginable. From blue painted fingernails without a scratch on the surface, to curved lips, deliciously red. With a great body too. And as for the down to earth, whenever I sawherpassing our house and we waved to one another, I quivered inwardly. I wouldn’t have liked her to know that. Not that I thought she was a mean spirited person in any way. Her soul was most probably every bit as perfect as all the rest of her. That of course would have been ultimately daunting. The truth was I admired Cherry but I could hardly speak to her, hardly even look at her. She made me intensely conscious
