Happy 40th!

We celebrated a birth– day this year - our forti– eth! So, it was a time to honor the traditions al– ready established, as well as a time to look forward to what this last decade of the century will brings (besides our fiftieth birth– day!). Tradition was most evi– dent at Homecoming '89. Larger crowds than ever participated in the week's events, including an alum– ni dinner/dance where ev– ery year's class was repre– sented by at least one gra– duate. It was nice to see so many alums returning for the events - reminding us that life moves on and changes, but is firmly grounded in the past. And it's the past that we have spent four-plus years studying and learning. A past that speaks to us out of the mouths of dead po– ets and warriors and kings. A past we must all accept

confront us throughout life - spiri– tual, physical, emotional. We have developed, here at USD, the strength and experience to overcome obsta– cles, and to reach for higher and higher goals. And so, now, the road lies before us. We each step out apparently alone. But, echoing softly behind us, are the memories and friendships from our years at USD. They will help to light and guide our way into the future.

ocean breeze blowing softly against your face, Sunday night mass with friends, Wednesday nights at . .. Who can forget these halcyon days? No one, hopefully. Instead, remember them all clearly, and remember how healthy and happy you were running through the canyons, and try to keep a little fun in your life. Ultimately, however, the gift we really take forward from USD is the will to keep growing, learning and changing. Challenges of all kinds will

and understand, so that we can move on and not repeat it. USD has tried to help us in this endeavor, helping us to develop a world view with which to frame the rest of our lives. But we have also learned to have fun - that sometimes you just gotta' take a break, or you'll be forced to run screaming out of wherever you're holed up to study, or write a paper.
