Meet Your Neighbor Shana Ruskin By Pam Teel

Millstone resident, Shana Ruskin, is in the fifth grade. She has played soccer and lacrosse in her hometown but her favorite thing to do is cheerleading. She started off cheering for the Millstone Eagle’s Pop Warner flag football team. She then moved to competitive cheerleading at World Cup in Freehold. She learned a lot about tumbling and stunting as a cheerleader. She has competed all over the country with her team. Her team is called the Milky Way’s. This year she will travel to Nashville, Atlanta, and hopefully Florida for competitions. Ten-year-old Shana comes from a big family. She has five older brothers, a sister, and two dogs. Shana likes tumbling but her real love is contortion. She can do some amazing things with her body. She is currently trying out to be on the next America’s Got Talent in the springtime. She just auditioned in NYC at the Jacob Javits Center and was called out of the line twice to be filmed in the preview for the show. (You can watch the preview on the America’s Got Talent website under NYC auditions, season 14) Shana won’t find out until February on whether she moves forward or not. Her motivation for contortion and trying out for America’s Got Talent is due to a fourteen-year-old girl named Soffie Dossi, who was on the show in season 11. She was also a contortionist. That motivated Shana to practice her routines several times per week. Whenever she is home watching TV, she is usually doing it upside down or spinning through the air. Shana thought that if Soffie can do it, why can’t she, so she sent a video in to the producers and was invited to come audition. So far she has had a cool experience meeting and talking to other contestants who were trying out. Shana is also an excellent student and a wonderful person. Her parents are so proud of her drive and determination. She has practiced hard and got as far as she did all on her own. Her close friends share her enthusiasm and anticipation with her. Shana is also a budding YouTube Star, as she posts fun videos focused on her contortion and unique Slime creations. Good luck to you Shana. All of Millstone will be rooting and praying for that call back in February.

J.R. Smith’s Youth Foundation Helping Those in Need By Pam Teel

The Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard, J.R. Smith, who grew up in Millstone Township, brought some of that holiday spirit to P.S. 22 in Staten Island on Friday. Smith's mother, Ida, and his sister, Stepha- nie, visited a special second-grade class at the school to supply them all with Jordan and Nike sneakers. The teacher, Anita Lisnow, also of Millstone Township, coordinated the day when she visited J.R.'s Team Swish store located in Millstone. The store sells J.R. Smith's personal brand apparel as well as Nike and Adidas. "I was going to the store to do something for my daughter's school and I started talking to J.R.'s father about my class in Staten Island, that I have amazing students who have needs and experiences that I haven't really gone through. He asked me how many kids are in my class and I told him that I have 28 students. He told me to get every one of the kids’ shoe sizes and that he was going to give them all a new pair of designer shoes for the holidays. I was in tears,” Lis- now stated. The Smith family gave the kids expensive sneakers, such as the Jordan Concord 11s, Jordan 14s, Nike Foamposite and Kyrie Irving sneakers. All of the sneakers are usually priced at about $90 each.

"It just does your heart good," J.R.’s mom Ida stated. "My husband said it’s all about the kids now, not about us anymore, so when Ani- ta came to us and said she worked in Staten Island and had a great group of kids, my husband just decided that we'll give them all shoes. Just to see their faces and to see them so happy is all we wanted to do.” "Some kids don't know what it's like to get name brand shoes," added Jr’s sister Stephanie. Prior to giving out the presents, Lisnow read the students J.R. and his brother Chris’s children’s book, HoopSmiths. The book promotes teamwork both on-and-off the court and teaches the value of teamwork through the story of the brothers chasing their NBA dreams together. After opening up all of the shoeboxes, trying on the shoes, and even some dancing, the students were able to personally thank J.R. Smith when his mom called him via FaceTime. "This is our first year giving a whole classroom sneakers," stated Ida. "We do randomly give to students in need. We donate a lot of clothes from our store to kids in need. We will continue to do this and hopefully each year do more and more through the J.R. Smith Youth Foundation and we will continue to support J.R. and Chris’s book that they wrote together. They do plan on a whole series of books,” stated Ida. J.R. always remembers where he came from and the leaders that influenced him as he was growing up. The J.R. Smith Family Assist Foundation is a US 501(c)(3) organization and registered charity dedicated to assisting underserved children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life. Learn more at: http://www.teamswish.com/#!foundation/c202h The foundation focuses on helping and supporting others from many tough situations while providing positive influences with their involvement in numerous projects and activities. The J.R. Smith Foundation is always looking for opportunities to help those in need. "J.R.'s foundation gives to kids in need," stated Ida. "Even to young adults going to college who may have a scholarship but might not have a meal plan because their parents can't afford it. Our Foundation will see to it they get a meal plan.” "J.R’s. dad, Earl, donates two sets of sneakers to the basketball team that J.R. and Chris went to at Lakewood High School every year," Stephanie noted. "On Christmas Eve, I will be going to the Children's Hospital representing J.R. Smith to give out gifts to the kids." It’s so great to see one of our own doing so much for those less fortunate. Thank you to The entire Smith family for all that you do to help others in need! Check out JR Smith Youth Foundation on facebook for future charity events, or how to donate. Achieve Your Resolution Resolutions can range from behavior changes to new goals depending on your lifestyle and goals. Perhaps you want to spend this New Year becoming healthy or you have made a goal to reach the next level in your career. Either way, there are tips you can use to be certain that your goal is achieved. PLAN YOUR RESOLUTION A resolution should not be made in the spur of the moment as the holiday approaches. Take a few months leading up to the New Year to create a resolution and a plan how you will achieve it. While you should sprinkle in different goals for yourself throughout the year, only choose one resolution each year. This should be your main focus. Be sure to choose one that is extremely important to you and one you can put the majority of your efforts into achieving. MOVING FORWARD Define sub-goals that will eventually guide you in completing your main resolution. These sub-goals should be limited by certain dates throughout the year. Set small rewards for yourself as these sub-goals are achieved. These will be used to regain motivation and also show that progress is being made. Keep a journal for different milestones you achieve during your journey. These notes also can be used as helpful reminders if you feel that you are slipping away from your goal. DON’T GET DISCOURAGED It’s important to remember that you are human. You will likely stray from your New Year’s resolution from time to time. The important thing to remember is that any setback is not permanent and is no reason to give up. Find family members or friends who also are committing to a resolution and use each other as a support system. Kind words can be great motivation to stay on path.

MoForNovember A record year thanks to local police and fire departments, CentraState board members and employees

MoForNovember took place once again at CentraState. This month-long campaign during November encourages men to grow their facial hair to raise awareness of and funds for men’s health and in particular men’s cancer. A record $10,835 was raised thanks to the 114 participants that took part this year. Members of Howell/Adelphia/Ramtown Fire, Howell, Manalapan and Freehold, Borough PD, took part as well as CentraState employees and CentraState Foundation Board Members. The New York Shaving Company, located in Freehold, NJ and with locations in New York City, sponsored the campaign and brought one of their master barbers from Brooklyn to provide a complimentary shave to some of the participants at the end of the event for the shave off. Barry Asch, Assistant VP for Cancer Services at the Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState, thanked each person for participating, noting that the funds raised will help CentraState in its efforts to reach out to the community and offer services that will allow men to live healthier lives. In addition to the men who participated, Alison Cleary, Manager of Population Health at CentraState's Health Awareness Center took part to show her support for those who might be suffering hair loss as a result of treatment. She shared that she suffered from hair loss several years ago as a result of taking prescribed medication and says, "while I no longer need medication and my hair has grown back, I decided to keep my ‘bio hair’ short and con- tinue to rock my faux hair all day, every day.” She went on to say “by sharing my story and participating in the shave off, I want to not only support awareness of men’s health, but also help men and women who may be considering – or wearing – wigs to feel more self-assured. Faux hair is fabulous!” VISA gift cards and a basket donated by The New York Shaving Company were raffled off to lucky recipients.

Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES I often feel that I would rather live with back pain than have “SURGERY”. Q: What is an Endoscopic Discectomy?

A:

The word endoscopy refers to a physician’s use of an endoscope, a small, flexible tube with a light to look inside of your body. It is the least invasive way to treat disc problems and takes about an hour. Ultimately, the patient is left with a ¼ inch scar but a lifetime of pain relief. Recent studies have proven that endoscopic spine procedures are a safe and effective way to treat various spinal conditions such as disc herniations, spinal stenosis, failed back surgery syndrome, as well as other neck and back conditions. If your neck or back pain is preventing you from participating in your daily activities, we encourage you to consider an endoscopic procedure as a possible option.

The decision of whether or not to have spine surgery can be very stressful. Today, due to advances in endoscopic spine, there are excellent alternatives to traditional, open back surgery. Patients come to the Spine Institute of NorthAmerica to discuss their options. They are often happy to learn that we can relieve their pain with minimal risk and with excellent outcomes. We use state-of- the-art, endoscopic techniques that are much less invasive than traditional open back surgery. Most of our patients walk out the same day and are back to work the next. Why should I consider having an endoscopic “PROCEDURE” instead?

Did you know that…? By Pam Teel

A day after she graduated high school, 17 year old, Juliane Koepcke and her mother were on their way to see her father when their plane was struck by light- ning and broke apart. The two had boarded a flight in Lima, bound for Pucallpa, and then on to Panguana to visit her father for Christmas in 1971. Still belted to her seat, Juliane dropped 10,000 feet from the sky and landed in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. Out of 91people on board, she was the sole survivor. Juliane grew up in Lima, Peru, and then moved to the Peruvian rain forest at the age of 14. This is where her parents established a Panguana Ecological Research station. After two years of living in the rain forest, Julaine went back to Lima to finish her schooling. Luckily for her, during that two years living there, her father taught her many things about the rain forest. She remembered the airport being packed on the morning of Christmas Eve. She and her mother sat in the second-to-last row on a three-seat bench. Juliane sat by the window, her mom next to her, and another passenger in the aisle seat. Her mother was never fond of flying. The flight was only an hour long and the first half hour was uneventful but there was turbulent weather ahead as they flew into a thunderstorm. Suddenly, daylight turned to night and there were lightning flashes from all directions. People screamed as the plane shook violently. Juliane saw a blinding white light over the right wing and heard the loud sound of the engines. As the plane started to nosedive, she heard her mother calmly say, to her, “Now it’s all over.”

Juliane returns to the jungle years later while writing her memoirs. Next to her is the deteriorated seat she sat in on that fateful day.

For Juliane everything went silent; no more roaring of the engines, no more people shouting. She was out of the plane and all alone still belted into her plane seat. The seat belt squeezed her so tight that she lost consciousness. She came to only to realize that she was headed toward the trees. Perhaps it was lucky for her that she passed out again. When she came to, she was on the jungle floor still belted in the row of three seats. Cold, wet and unable to move, she stayed where she was until the next morning, floating in and out of consciousness. She tried to stand up but she still couldn’t. Her left eye was swollen shut and she could barely see through her other one. Her right collarbone was broken, she had a deep gash on her calf, and a flesh wound on her arm. She knew she had to make an effort to stand up and find help. Tired and confused and most likely dealing with a concussion, she tried to remember the things her father told her about the jungle. She licked the dew off the leaves for water and was lucky enough to find a nearby spring. She suddenly remembered her father telling her that if you ever get lost, to follow the water, for streams will turn into rivers and they will lead to out of the jungle. Little by little the spring led her to a small stream and eventually to a larger river. She knew what to eat and what not to eat and knew that most of what grows in the jungle was poisonous. Being that it was rainy season, she didn’t find much to eat. During her 11 day trek through the jungle she found candy and some other items scattered about from the wreckage. She knew that insects ruled the jungle, and she had encountered them all. Luckily, she lived in the jungle long enough as a child to be acquainted with the bugs and other creatures there. There was almost nothing her parents hadn’t taught her about the jungle. Her insect bites had become infected. After nine days, several spent floating down stream; she found a boat moored near a shelter. Relying again on her father's advice, she poured gasoline from the boat’s engine on her insect wounds, which succeeded in removing thirty-five maggots from one arm, then waited there until rescuers arrived. Hours later, the lumbermen who used the shelter arrived and tended to her injuries and bug infestations. The next morning they took her via a seven-hour canoe ride down river to a lumber station. With the help of a local pilot, she was airlifted to a hospital and then to her father in Pucallpa. Juliane moved to Germany where she fully recovered from her injuries. She studied biology at the University of Kiel, graduating in 1980. She received a doctorate from Ludwig-Maximilian University and returned to Peru to conduct research in mammalogy. Now known as Juliane Diller, she’s as librarian at the Bavarian State Zoological Collection in Munich. Some theorize that the row of seats actually acted as a parachute and slowed down her decent. The experience prompted her to write a memoir about her survival called, When I Fell from the Sky .

Romantic Spots in Central NJ For Valentine’s Day By Lauren Kolacki As time passes and life gets in theway, we fall into the habit of our day-to-day routine. We are pulled in a million directions, so we find it easiest to put our relationship on the back burner, figuring they are most likely to understand. However, this winter it is time to rekindle the flame that brought you together in the first place. We have put together a list of some of the most romantic spots New Jersey has to offer. Liberty State Park, located in Jersey City, is a green oasis accompanied by the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. There are miles of walkways, ferry rides and kayak tours. Cape May is the perfect place to jumpstart or rekindle a romance. The entire city is a National Historic District, with 600 preserved Victorian buildings. With its adorable B&B’s, outstanding restaurants and special events all year ‘round, there is something for everyone. The Cape May Lighthouse provides views across the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean. The Delsea Drive-In Theatre, located in Vineland, NJ, is the ideal place to snuggle with your significant other. Cuddle up beneath the stars and enjoy two screens, double feature and the tremendous snack stand. High Point State Park located near Wantage Township in Sussex County, within the Skylands Region of northwestern New Jersey, United States, near the border with New York State. There are 50 miles of trails within the park; you can hike to the monument marking the state's summit. There is a rumor that if you and your significant other hold hands and walk three times around Passion Puddle, located at Rutgers University, you will get married. The Wyckoff Gardens, on the corner of Godwin Avenue and Crescent Avenue, is a very quiet and beautiful spot. From its new Rose garden to the ponds and wildlife, you will experience absolute serenity as you feel nature surround you.

Microblading

M icroblading is a semi-permanent makeup procedure that allows you to dramatical- ly correct or fully reconstruct lost eyebrow. It was first introduced in Asia. Eyebrow Microblading is performed by manually depositing pigment in the basal layer of the epidermis by a special pen. It does not involve the use of a machine. Unlike permanent makeup

brow treatments, Microblading techniques in- volves drawing individual, crisp hair strokes that are more natural looking than tattooing, brow pencil or powders. The blade of a Microblading pen contains numer- ous pins that are 3 times thinner than the needles used in tattooing. When performed correctly, this procedure is almost painless. We use a very effec- tive numbing solution to limit discomfort.

Coming Together for the Greater Good this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day By YMCA of Western Monmouth County

For over 20 years, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service has encouraged individuals to volunteer their time to improve their communities. That spirit of community service can be a rallying point to heal our differences through a common cause, as giving back and strengthening the places where we live, work and play is something we all can agree on. Here at the Y we’re encouraging everyone to use this day, Monday, January 21, 2019, as a call to action to get involved—in large or small ways—to make our communities better. In our busy day-to-day lives, volunteering can quickly take a back seat to other obligations and priorities. In fact, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, volunteering has seen a decline in the United States; only 25 percent of American adults volunteered in 2016, the lowest rate since the government began collecting this data 14 years ago. Our communities need volunteers to keep them strong. The less people volunteer the more underserved children, families and adults don’t get the help they need to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Our Y relies on volunteers to do everything from serve on our board to assist with youth swim lessons. Each of our volunteers’ selflessness and willingness to roll up their sleeves to give back helps improve the lives of thousands of kids, adults and families. Additionally, while the community benefits from a volunteer’s work, the volunteer benefits as well. A recent Gallop poll found that nine out of 10 people said they receive an emotional boost from doing kind things for other people. It’s this kind of emotional boost that will bring us together as a nation. We’re grateful for every one of our Y volunteers and we hope you’ll join their ranks. To learn more about volunteer opportunities at the Y, please visit ymcanj.org. Join us to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at our 30th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Breakfast. Hosted by The Community YMCA and the YMCA of Western Monmouth County and featuring Keynote Speaker Rev. Ronald L. Sparks of Bethel AME Church in Freehold, the breakfast will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 from 8–10am at Branches Catering, 123 Monmouth Road, West Long Branch, NJ 07764. HOME IMPROVEMENT Did You Know? Your Septic System Is Your Responsibility

Did you know that as a homeowner you are responsible for maintaining your septic system? Maintaining your septic system protects your investment in your home. You should periodically inspect your system and pump out your septic tank. Unlike those who live in areas served by regional sewerage systems, septic system owners are unique because they are solely responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of their wastewater treatment and disposal system. By adhering to simple and straightforward guidelines, septic system owners can ensure years of trouble-free operation with minimal maintenance. If properly designed, constructed and maintained, your septic system can provide long-term effective treatment of your household wastewater. If your septic system isn’t properly maintained, you might need to replace it, costing you thousands of dollars. A malfunctioning system can contaminate groundwater which might be a source of drinking water. It also is important to keep your system properly maintained because it must be in good working order if you are planning to sell your home.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Size Matters when it comes to Adding to your Home’s Value If you are looking to add value to your home, consider an addition to add major value while also increasing square footage. It's important to rec- ognize that some home renovations offer more of an impact on a home's value than others. If you can add square footage to a house, you always add value. But, if you are happy and like the home you’re in now and appreciate your neighbors but yearn for extra space to entertain company or relax, adding on makes sense as an option over packing up and moving. Even if you have no plans to sell anytime soon, consider the resale value of your project. You might not always turn a profit on your home-expan- sion investment, but you should go into the job with realistic expectations about at least some kind of payback.

3 Ways To Repurpose Unwanted Pools Pools are great if you have the time, money, and motivation to keep them in working order. Unfortunately, they’re expensive to keep up. If you’re not using it often, there may be better ways to use the space. Deck: If you enjoy hosting outdoor gatherings or want to create a private area to sit back and relax, transforming your pool into a deck may be a good option for you. The price will vary depending on your pool’s surface area, the shape of the pool, whether you want benches or different levels built in, and what materials you want to use. A contractor can give you an estimate based on these criteria, but to give you a general idea, typical deckovers cost around $11,000 and take approximately a week. Because you can plan your deck in a way that doesn’t damage the pool, this is a safe option. If you ever tire of the deck, you can rip it out and go right back to the pool. Patio: A sunken patio can give you the same functionality as a deck with- out the higher price tag. This is because the sunken patio incorporates features like the steps and handrails into the design, saving you money. To build your sunken patio, level the bottom of the pool, then choose the seating, plants, and other features you want to include. You should also consider building a fence around your patio to prevent people from falling in. Greenhouse: Temperatures underground provide a stable environment for plants to grow, so turning an unwanted pool into a greenhouse makes good sense. This option not only eliminates the cost of pool upkeep, it also helps you cut down on the grocery bill by giving you a year-round source of home-grown food. If you’re interested in growing your own fruits and veggies year-round, ask a contractor if your pool can be converted into an underground greenhouse.

debris and clean up removal scams after bad weather

After natural disasters, unlicensed contractors and scammers often come into the affected area promising quick repairs at discount prices. Always ask contractors for references and call previous clients. Write down the driver’s license and vehicle information (make, model, and license plate number) in case you need to report the contractor to authorities. Be skeptical of people promising immediate clean-up and debris removal. Some may demand payment up-front for work they never do, quote outrageous prices, or simply lack the skills, licenses, and insurance to legally do the work.

Ruth and Jeff Sturman, owners of Best Cruises & Tours in East Brunswick, NJ, have been helping people in the northeast plan the perfect getaway for the past 25 years. They began their full-service travel agency in 1994 with a passion for travel. “We specialize in custom packages that require extra care, with a focus on outstanding customer service,” Jeff explained. To make planning a vacation easier for their clients, they first offer a range of vacation choices, from cruises, cruise tours and river cruises to all-inclusive vacations, land packages and family vacations. “Then, we help navigate the choices and select the vacation that’s right for you.” Best Cruises & Tours has received numerous awards for sales and customer service. It also has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and has attained Top Producer status with most major cruise lines and tour companies, which “allows us to offer our clients the lowest prices,” Jeff and Ruth added. “We treat every vacation as though it were our own,” the Sturmans said, adding that they often receive kudos from satisfied clients. “While Best Cruises & Tours is in East Brunswick, we have a very strong client base in Monmouth and Ocean Counties,” the owners explained. And in Freehold on February 7th, they are hosting an Alaska Cruisefest event for travelers who are interested in trips to Alaska, one of their specialties. Jeff is a certified Alaska Expert with the Alaska State Tourism Association and has been to Alaska over 35 times visiting and escorting tour groups through the Great Land. “If you are planning an Alaska cruise or cruise tour vacation, this is one event you do not want to miss,” Jeff Sturman explained. “These presentations will feature all the information necessary to help choose the Alaska vacation that is right for you.” The Alaska Cruisefest seminar is co-hosted by Princess Cruises and is available exclusively to attendees, who can learn about Alaska, win door prizes and enjoy complimentary light refreshments. Although admission is free, attendees must RSVP by calling Best Cruises & Tours or registering on the agency’s website: www.bestcruises.com.
