Chapter 14 Exile and Jerusalem Rebuilt (722 and 535 BC)

Tragically, the nations did not listen to the warnings of the prophets of God and other nations captured both Israel and Judah. The city of Jerusalem, including its beautiful temple and city walls, was utterly desolated by its captors. God’s people found themselves enslaved a second time. Once again, they needed deliverance. Then, after several years of living in captivity, God graciously prompted Cyrus, one of the foreign ruling kings, to help the Israelites. Cyrus permitted the Israelites to return to Jerusalem to recon- struct the temple and the strong walls surrounding it.
