LETTER FROM THE EDITOR September has always been a favorite month of mine as hunting season tends to kick off all over the nation for everything from dove, deer, teal, and elk. Not to be forgotten, we tend to see cooler weather as well...even if it’s only a few degrees. I’ve already been able to venture back to Kentucky to continue my pursuit of an archery harvest of a whitetail in velvet. We had a great hunt again this year, camping near the Kentucky River, thanks to the folks from Salt River Outfitters. We were joined this year by Steve Nessl of Yamaha Outdoors, as well as Kevin, Jeff, and Michael. We spent seven days over there and had some great encounters, but with both sadness and happiness, I report that my quest will continue again next year. Stay tuned to see all the action and story on both Yamaha’s Whitetail Diaries and Americana Outdoors presented by Garmin. We’ve also been on the water learning more about the new Garmin Panoptix LiveScope. I’ve always thought of myself as a forward fishing angler; targeting what’s ahead and around the shoreline with some exceptions when it comes to offshore fishing. The Garmin Panoptix LiveScope gives me the ability to see targets in that style of fishing, but it has opened my eyes to offshore vertical fishing like nothing else available.

We’ve also been out in the field with Trevor Young from HiViz chasing aoudad and shooting new product videos. Trevor scored on a pair of aoudad using a Performance Center 460XVR handgun. In addition, we’ve been field testing new fishing rods from Bass Pro Shops, hunting hogs with the new TenPoint Nitro X Crossbow and gearing up for the upcoming opening to Texas Whitetail Season. Not to be forgotten is how busy we have been as we gear up for the upcoming AFTCO Collegiate Bass Fishing Open at Lake Dardanelle, Arkansas, as well as covering the Ca- bela’s National Walleye Tour Championship, IFA Redfish Tour events, and hitting the waters offshore. Finally, Angel has made a few new creations that we’ll be sharing soon from the kitchen…certainly, one of the best parts of my job is field testing her new recipes from the harvests and catches on our trips! We’ll see you in the woods and on the water! Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy your time in the outdoors.

THREE BAITS FOR FALL FISHING BY KYLE CURRY

Fall is a great time of the year. Summer has come to an end, meaning air temperatures are starting to cool off. When this happens, leaves begin to change color and the woods start to show some life. With this change in seasons comes the start of deer season as many states will officially hold their long awaited opening days over the next sev- eral weeks. If you happen to not be a hunter, the opening of deer season is a welcomed sight for you as well. More people will be in the woods for the next several months, and less people will be out on the water. If you are looking to take advantage of the less crowded lakes this fall, it is highly likely that some days you will experience great success and oth- er times you’ll leave the ramp very humbled. Fall presents a wide array of changing variables as temperatures tend to vary drastically, rainfall can be significant at times, and a mixture of sun and clouds can be expected. This presents quite the challenge for anglers willing to take to the lake. Even with the instability fall can provide, fishing can still be very fruitful. In this article we will take a look at three baits that will be key to your success when targeting bass during this time of the year.

One of the best things that happens as air and water temperatures drop is the migration of shad from their summer haunts to the shallows. Since the middle to end of May, the luring prey has been hiding out in deep water creating a challenge for anglers to target feeding fish. Now that the bait- fish are swarming to the shallows, it will become easier to catch them. An awesome bait to throw early in the mornings will be a buzzbait. The new Suicide Buzz from Big Bite Baits is a great shad imitating topwater lure. A buzzbait has long been a fall time staple, and the new bait from the Big Bite Baits Tour Series takes it to a whole new level. Not only is this a good presentation for low light situations, the Suicide Buzz (below) can also work all day long when the conditions are right.

Big Bite Baits Suicide Buzz

SPRO Litle John 50

Big Bite Baits 8” Finesse Worm

Following the trend of chasing shad and targeting feeding bass, the next bait that is a must have this time of year is the SPRO Little John 50 (pictured above) . A crankbait is another deadly presenta- tion around hungry fish. The Little John line of crankbaits from SPRO can load the boat with fish. This bait works great through cover, and hunts well in open water. During fall time fishing, these are the characteristics you want in a crankbait. When bass are feeding in open water, the action of the bait is ideal for calling fish in. Conversely, as this bait bounces off cover, darting through the water column…it truly shines! Fall can provide a wide ar- ray of weather scenarios, and the SPRO Little John 50 is designed to perform well in all instances.

Later in the fall cold fronts begin to occur more frequently. Once these fronts blow through, we are left with sunny, blue bird skies. In these situations it is key to downsize lure and line presentations. The ideal bait for post frontal conditions is the 8” Finesse Worm from Big Bite Baits (top right ). Pair- ing this soft plastic with a lightweight jighead is a good way to search for the fish positioned to the bottom. Most finesse worms that anglers use when “down- sizing” with a shaky head are of the 4” variety. It may be a simple mental approach, but the larg- er finesse worm appears to generate more confi- dence, especially for tournament anglers. When the goal is to catch the five largest bass possible in just 8 hours, throwing bigger baits increase your odds at catching larger fish. The key is to be con- fident in the lure on the other end of your line, and the 8” Finesse Worm provides that. Long story short, the fall is one of the best times of the year to hit the water. While the number of tro- phy fish may not be overwhelming, you are guar- anteed to get a ton of bites. Be sure to fill your tackle box with these three presentations, and get ready to catch some fish.

YAMAHAWOLVERINES ADVENTURE IN KENTUCKY

Yamaha’s Steve Nessl and Wade Middleton recently traveled to Kentucky for a week long hunt to take part in the Opening Day of “Velvet Season” for Whitetail Deer. The crew brought along the New Wolverine X2 and the Wolverine X4 Side-by-Sides to use as their main source of transporta- tion when building stands, setting up trail cameras and hunting. “The cool thing about being in a remote camp is that we get to drive the Wolverines from camp to the stands.” says Steve. He goes on, “I woke up every morning look out my tent and see the new Wolverine X2. It’s the first time I got to hunt with it and Jeff (cameraman) and I both loved how cool, and quiet the ride was. That’s the next generation of Side-by-Sides that Yamaha Offers. Throughout the week we were there in Kentucky, we used the Wolverines to check trail cameras, take it to the stream when we went fishing, and we used it for what we at Yamaha build it for. For me, the beauty of it is, that when you don’t think about it too much when you’re using it, you know that it is playing a major role in what you are doing. You take the Wolverine X2 out of the equation and you’re trying to figure out how you’re going to get to some of these places in a truck, and all of a sudden you’ve got a lot of things working against you. That’s the next generation of Side-by- Sides that Yamaha offers.

It was nice to have the Wolverine X2 and X4 out here. I actually trailered them from my home in Georgia and am excited to take them back and chase some deer down there with them. The Wolverine X2 is a versatile workhorse. Use for hunting, chores around your property or just rid- ing your local trails the Wolverine X2 is a “do-it-all machine.” From having fun in them to working out of them, if you mash fun and work together that’s hunting for me. The Wolverine Side-by-Sides are handy to have but they’re a heck of a lot of fun to hunt out of them too. “ See how Steve and Wade faired battling the heat in Ketucky as they pursue a deer in velvet on a fu- ture episode of Americana Outdoors. _________________________________________________

MAX WILSON WINS CHAMPIONSHIP AT LAKE OF THE WOODS B rett K ing and T erry H ora take A ngler of the Y ear titles BY B rett C arlson

Max Wilson, of Lomira, Wisconsin, weighed a combined total of 45.83 pounds to win the Cabela’s Na- tional Walleye Tour Championship on Lake of the Woods, September 6. The angler won a fully rigged Ranger 620FS with a 250-horsepower Evinrude outboard, $15,000 in cash and $2,120 in Anglers Advan- tage cash for a total of $88,585 in winnings. When 20-year-old Dylan Nussbaum won the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour event on Devils Lake ear- lier this year, the walleye fishing industry collectively took notice. At the time, it was inexplicable that someone so inexperienced could outperform the world’s best walleye anglers. Fast forward six weeks and the unthinkable has happened again. This time, 21-year-old Wisconsin angler Max Wilson took his knowledge of deep basin fishing and applied it to Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods. This was only Wilson’s second full season on the NWT. Prior to that, he fished as a co-angler and dab- bled as a pro on other circuits for two years. After a strong season opener on Winnebago, his home waters, he struggled at Saginaw Bay and Devils Lake. First-place pro-angler Max Wilson (left) and first-place co-angler Scott Mathson (right) display their championship trophies at the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour Championship at Lake of the Woods on September 7. “I came into this championship with an open mind,” said Wilson. “I really did not expect to do well. I only caught three overs in all my practice and all three came within 15 minutes of each other.”

Wilson had two separate patterns, one for unders and one for overs. In this event, all walleyes be- tween 19 1/2 and 28 inches had to be released. Anglers were allowed to keep one walleye over 28 inches in length per day, hence the term “over.” Likewise, fish less than 19 1/2 inches are known as “unders” or “slots.” For his overs, Wilson ran to the Knights and Bridg- es area, located near the Canadian line, just south of the Garden Island complex. There, female wall- eyes were actively feeding on big tullibees. “There were smaller fish on the bottom, but I was intentionally fishing above them,” said Wilson. “They would sit just off the sharp, jagged rock structure. In the morning, they would sit up closer to the structure and then slide out into the abyss during the day.” Each of the first two days, Wilson was without an over with 15 minutes left to fish. Then, he’d turn to his “Hail Mary,” a No. 9 Rapala Tail Dancer painted by Viper Custom Tackle (green UV coated). “I knew the wild-card in this tournament would be the overs. Each day I was kind of downtrodden and then, boom, it would happen right at the end.” For his unders, Wilson trolled custom-painted No. 7 Berkley Flicker Shads (purple, chartreuse and pink). Both his crankbaits were fished with lead- core line and trolled at 2.4 to 2.6 mph. On day one, Wilson caught 14.37 pounds and sat just outside the top 10. On day two, he caught an- other 12.84 and rose to fifth place. Today, he man- aged a near-perfect 18.62 pounds, which gave him a cumulative weight of 45.83 pounds. Brett King wrapped his season with a fifth-place finish at the championship and won the Angler of the Year title. King finished the season with 753 points, three more than fellow Wisconsin Pro Tom Kemos.

“It’s kind of mind-boggling; it’s going to take a few days to soak in,” said King, who won the Saginaw Bay event earlier in the year. “I still had to fish into the last hour today to make sure I had this sealed up. That just shows how brutal this competition is, how good these guys are.” King and Co-Angler of the Year, Terry Hora, earned entry fees into the 2019 NWT tour events and cus- tom NWT rings. Nick Schertz (second), Robert Blosser (third), Mi- chael Olson (fourth), Brett King (fifth), Drake Herd (sixth), Gary Maher (seventh), Rick Olson (eighth), Jason Przekurat (ninth), and Kevin McQuoid (tenth) round out the top 10 pro-anglers. The top-10 co-angler finishers are Scott Mathson (first), Glenn Trudeau (second), Aaron Johnson (third), Jeremy Brenner (fourth), John Herd (fifth), Dillon Robinson (sixth), Terry Hora (seventh), Eric Sherrill (eighth), Randall Vandezande (ninth) and Dave Nichols (tenth). THE BLOCK THAT BRINGS DEER INTO THE AREA AND KEEPS THEM THERE! BY ADAM ELMHORST

Ever since we started using the Purina Quick Draw Block we saw two big changes. First thing we noticed is that we saw deer come into the area where we put the block out that normally have rarely been seen. We’re able to get some pictures off our Stealth Cams to look and pattern the deer for upcoming hunts. Finally we noticed that over the course of a new deer season, our deer our bigger! We’re not just talking about antlers though, our deer’s body mass has increased in our bucks and does a like. The Purina’s Quick Draw Block is critical year round. During the Spring, providing the Quick Draw Block during this time helps promote antler growth, and keeps does andfawns healthy and growing. In the Summer, when the Texas heat is bearing down on the land, forage can be scare especially during droughts. This block contains minerals and nutrients criti- cal for your deer’s growth and those high-stressed times. Even deploying this block during the rut is a benefit. Bucks and does are constanly active running great distances chasing or being chased so they lose a lot of weight. Having this Quick Draw Block available will help keep your deer’s weight in check.

You can find Purina Quick Draw Blocks at local Purina Dealer .

LAKE PREVIEW Lake Dardanelle, AR - Oct. 11-13

BY KYLE CURRY

Across the country, have settled into the fall se- mester. With fall around the corner, it’s time to take a look at the first event of the 2018-19 sea- son of the Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series. The first event on the ACA calendar this fall is the AFTCO Collegiate Bass Open on Lake Dardanelle. Sporting a new format compared to years past, this event is set to draw an elite field of college an- glers and will have a drastic impact on the chase for Cabela’s School of the Year Presented by Abu Garcia. Lake Dardanelle is a 34,300-acre reservoir on the Arkansas River that is loaded with bass. Situat- ed near Russellville, AR, Lake Dardanelle is wide- ly considered to be one of the top fisheries in The Natural State. River systems typically provide very diverse fisheries with plenty of visible cover for anglers to target. Lake Dardanelle is no different. Many of the tributaries and creek arms that com- prise this central Arkansas fishery are filled with flooded timer, vegetation, and rip-rap rock banks.

One of the key factors that contributes to the qual- ity of the fishing on Lake Dardanelle is the lake lev- el. The Arkansas River fluctuates throughout the year as surrounding areas receive rainfall, and that water begins to make its way through the system. When all of this new water makes its way on down the river, the water clarity turns extremely mud- dy and most of the quality fishing areas become washed out. For all intensive purposes, we will preview the event with the hopes that weather will not significantly impact lake levels.

The AFTCO Colegiate Bass Open will be held at Lake Dar- danelle State Park.

As was mentioned earlier, Lake Dardanelle boasts a wide variety of cover. At various points in the year, any one of these three types of structure can have the potential to produce tournament winning bags. Flooded vegetation and lilly pads will be one area these college anglers take a look at in early October. Bass will push up into this shallow cover to feed on bream and other small baitfish. These fish can be targeted with a SPRO Bronzeye Frog , or a variety of Big Bite Baits soft plastics . This type of pattern will surrender some quality bites, but can it produce five solid fish for each of the two tournament days? The next predominant cover out on Lake Darda- nells is wood cover. Flooded brush and standing timber serve as ambush points for feeding bass to track down an easy meal. Fishing these areas with different soft plastics and moving baits would be a good place to start in practice. The SPRO Little John in Citrus Shad could also be a player. These Lake Dardanelle bass will be focusing on shad as the water begins to cool off. Look for flooded timber to be a factor in determining who wins this event. Lastly, another main piece of cover present on this Arkansas River impoundment is rip-rap. Numer- ous roadways cross the lake creating vast stretch- es of rock bank for anglers to fish. A majority of these roadways cross the many small creeks and bayous throughout Lake Dardanelle. With the shad beginning their migration to the backs of the creeks for the fall, fishing these areas with SPRO crankbaits may prove to be the winning pattern. Past years have seen this event won on a variety baits. Anglers are provided many options, in many different areas, allowing teams to space out and find what works for them. This year will also mark one of the first times in recent history that the ACA hosts an event in the fall. With a new tournament date also comes a change to the format of the event. The AFTCO Collegiate Bass Open will be a standard 5 bass limit tournament. After the con-

CHANGE THE SKIN FOR THE SEASON YOU’RE IN!

You never know if the ducks might move through while you are on a bowhunt. Or if it might snow while you are goose hunting. Perhaps you want to bowhunt the evening before the opening of fire- arm season. In all of these scenarios, you would either need to pack for at least a couple different hunting sit- uations or risk being forced to make do with the wrong camo. Now there is a solution to the camo conundrum. It’s called VERSAskins! VERSAskins is multi-camo outerwear. Yes, one premium, high performance hunting outfit (jack- et and/or pant) that comes standard in Realtree EDGE but that can also be quickly “skinned” in any of three alternative camouflage patterns, Realtree MAX5 for waterfowling, AP Blaze for firearm sea- son and AP Snow for late season hunting in the snow. Thanks to VERSAskins’ patented QuickSwitch sys- tem, a clever series of zippers and snaps designed for efficient re-skinning, you can literally change out camo patterns in less than two minutes even while in the field! Just change the skin for the sea- son you’re in!

This means no more needing to pack a truck full of different camo outfits or having to buy full outfits for every type of hunting you do. With VERSAskins, all you need to bring along are the alternative skins, each of which comes in a handy stuffsack the size of a small pillow case.

Add or Change a Skin in a matter of minutes!

The heart of the entire VERSAskins concept is the ability to buy one outfit and change the camo as needed. Thanks to VERSAskins’ patented Quick- Switch system, changing camo patterns takes less than two minutes and is accomplished with an ef- ficient series of zippers and snaps. QuickSwitch allows you to change camos on the fly in the field. See what people are already saying about VERSAskins! “From the high quality design to the innova- tive adaptability, VERSAskins has thought of everything! I saved time and money by choosing VERSAskins for my hunting apparel .” Austin K. - Michigan “The VERSAskins product is a game chang- er. I can’t wait to get into the field with it this season! ” Troy H. - Michigan “The VERSAskins line has already saved me money on this season’s gear hunt- ing for moose, deer, duck, coyote, and bear. Lots of game and only 1 suit.” Marco D. - Ontario “I absolutely love the VERSAskins cloth- ing. It’s comfortable, quiet, and so easy to change the “Skin”, or outer pat- tern depending on terrain or season!” Ryan W. - Wisconsin

Each skin comes in a handy compact bag the size of a small size pillow case for easy storage.

The skins are designed so that you can access the pockets from your base layer quickly.

The Base Layer is outfitted with 120 grams of internal insulation to keep you warm in the field.

“This year’s tick season is theworst in years!” -PestWorld.org TICK(ing) TIME BOMB Due to the mild winter we had last year, the tick population (much lke other insects) have thrived and emerged earlier than usual. On top of that, in 2010, there was a very large acorn crop which caused a rise in the white-footed mouse popula- tion. So you’re probably asking what mice and acorns have to do with ticks? Well, when the ticks hatched they had an endless buffet of mic to feed and grow. Now here in 2018, mic are in short-supply so these same ticks will resort to the next best thing for food - humans! For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and oth- er outdoor gear, Sawyer Permethrin is more than just an insect repellent — it actually kills ticks, mosquitoes, spiders, chiggers, mites, and more than 55 other kinds of insects. Permethrin is also effective against the Yellow Fever Mosquito, which can transmit the Zika Virus. Providing a fantastic odorless barrier of protec- tion, a single application of Permethrin lasts for 6 weeks or 6 washings. Using it on outdoor gear also helps reduce the mosquito population in your camp and prevents ticks from attaching to you. Maximize protection from mosquitoes and ticks by combining Permethrin with Sawyer Picaridin, an effective and comfortable topical repellent.
