2. Click in the Resource Name field in the bottom pane. The first empty cell in the Resource Name field appears with a border and a down arrow. 3. Select the Resource Name list. The resource name appears in the bottom pane. 4. Select the desired material resource assigned a fixed cost. The resource is selected.

Click below the Roofer resource in the bottom pane.

Click ResourceName .

Scroll as necessary and click Roofing Materials.

5. Select OK .

The material resource is assigned to the task, a 1 appears in the Units field, and the fixed resource cost appears in the Cost field.

Notice that the duration of the task is still one week since material resources do not impact the schedule. Also notice the Units field displays a 1 .

Use the Duration spin box in the bottom pane to change the Install Roof task duration to 2 weeks and select OK . Notice the cost for the Roofer resource increased since the amount of work required increased; however, the fixed resource cost (Roofing Materials) did not change. Change the duration of the task back to 1 week .

Practice the Concept: Select the 39 Landscaping task and assign the Landscaping Materials resource which has a fixed cost of $1,500 . Again, notice that the duration of the task did not change.

Remove the split.

Discussion

Costs are generally variable or fixed. Resource costs are variable and vary with duration. Material costs are fixed and do not vary. You also have a class of cost that are fixed, they do not vary with duration, but are variable from one instance to
