well d one! In the pages of this report, you will discover the areas of the organization being supported, who they are benefiting and how they are empowering AtlantiCare’s vision for a healthier future.

Thanks to your selfless generosity, 2019was a spectacular year. Foundation donors contributed more than $3.1 million, an accomplishment we can celebrate. Your donations are at work in our healthy community programs, at the Cancer Care Institute, in medical education and brick and mortar investments. They also support our Heart &Vascular Institute, assist our employees in need and enhance patient care throughout the organization, including services for women and children, behavioral health expansion and on the front line of the opioid epidemic. We are truly fortunate to have you – our donors, funding life-saving projects, services and technology. Every day, your generosity inspires us, encourages us and reminds us howgrateful we are to have people like you as part of our family. When committed individuals come together working towards a common goal, historical achievements are made. AtlantiCare is a true partnership – a coalition of experts and supporters, willing to do whatever it takes to bring the future of advanced healthcare to southern New Jersey, right now. With your support, we offer leading-edge linear accelerators for radiation cancer therapy. We teach wellness and nutrition to at-risk families in Atlantic City. We provide free health screenings. We’re making inroads in the battle against the opioid epidemic. And we have placed hundreds of life-saving automatic defibrillators in public places throughout the region. Life can change in a moment. Foundation donors help ensure AtlantiCare is ready, when that moment comes. You are at the forefront of a critical mission to build the best healthcare system south Jersey has ever seen. As 2019 comes to a close, we welcome the dawn of another year and fresh opportunities to power a new era of improving and saving lives. Your life-affirming support is very much appreciated. We are proud and grateful to have you in the Foundation family.

ANNUAL REPORT ON GIVING

Marie Her mission is making your day

brighter

Gifts of time equaled 22,000 volunteer hours given by our 270 loyal and committed volunteers and 1,500 hours through our Day of Service program where close to 400 compassionate businesses and individuals lent a hand through our community outreach initiatives.

Marie Jerdan of Absecon likes to challenge herself. It’s a little game she plays, volunteering at the reception desk at ARMC Mainland, Tuesday mornings. “I see a little glint in another’s eye and I know I can make them smile. Walking into the hospital, people can get a little apprehensive. If I can make a joke, get them to smile, then I brightened their day a little,” Marie says. She helps visitors, patients looking for outpatient services, pretty much anybody who comes to the desk in need of information or directions. “It’s important to give back, however you can. It makes me a better person. And I love it. Tuesday is my vacation day, away from the chaos of home,” she says. She has been practicing her people skills at Mainland for over 20 years. Not that she needs much practice. Being funny and nice comes naturally. “I’m definitely a people person,” she says. Her volunteer history goes back even further. As a teenager, she was a candy striper at her hometown hospital in Atlantic City. “You can always count on Marie for a funny story and a laugh,” says Maria Bocelle, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Volunteer Supervisor. “She is a dedicated volunteer with a personality and quick wit that bring joy to all who meet her,” she says.

Karen A healthy outlook, a healthier

life

Gifts to the Heart & Vascular Institute have assisted 4 patients with limited resources to participate in the Ornish Lifestyle Medical program to help reverse heart disease to improve their overall well-being. One day in January, Karen Koptic’s world turned upside down. In good health, she was careful about her diet and regularly rode her bicycle around her Margate neighborhood. But bicycling was never fun. It seemed to sap all her strength. Fortunately, she reported that situation to her doctor, who referred her to cardiologist Vineshkumar Patel, MD. Dr. Patel discovered blocked blood flow to her heart. Within days, she had a cardiac catheterization, followed by triple bypass surgery.

Dr. Patel recommended AtlantiCare’s Ornish Lifestyle Medicine™, an intensive lifestyle modification program. Ornish combines stress management, exercise and nutrition in a medically-supervised protocol, proven to reverse the effects of heart disease. Her insurance didn’t cover it, but a Foundation grant covered part of the cost. As she was about to start, she took another hit, with the unexpected death of her husband. That left her unsure about her prospects for success making the commitment to something new. “When I thought about my daughter, left with only one parent, I decided Ornish was worth trying,” she recalls. She learned diet modification and safe exercise. Heart-healthy stress management training also helped in her grieving. And she made fast friends with others in the class, facing similar health issues. “I was skeptical at first, but after nine weeks, we had a blast. Today, I recommend it to everyone. And the Foundation grant was huge. With Christopher’s death, the expense would have been almost impossible. It was a gift I won’t forget,” she says.

Proceeds from AtlantiCare signature events benefit clinical and community programs and services that make a difference. Our generous supporters, like Calvi Electric, have been able to make a difference in the following ways: 62 Healthy Schools,

For the Brestle family, owners of Calvi Electric Company in Atlantic City, supporting the community is a tradition going back generations. “I have a letter opener,” says CEO George Brestle, “A token of thanks from Atlantic City Hospital for a donation made back in the 1950s. Our history of partnership goes way back,” he says. Calvi is a major sponsor of the Foundation’s signature annual fundraising events, the Thomas L. Glenn, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament and the Annual Century Club Gala. George’s son, Michael, company president, says it’s just the right thing to do. “This community has supported our company over the decades, as our family prospered. It’s important to give back,” he says. George’s grandfather, Joseph Calvi, founded the firm in 1909. Joseph established the firm’s commitment to philanthropy quickly and today’s Calvi Electric continues to invest in dozens of charitable organizations serving Atlantic County, including the AtlantiCare Foundation. “We are fortunate that our business doesn’t require a big advertising budget. So we invest that money back into the community. I’d rather see it go to people who can really use it,” George says.

Healthy Children grants awarded, totaling $55,200 and reaching 118 school partners 10 community gardens funded through the Growing

Green initiative. 113,165 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables distributed from the Pantry at the Plex.

Linda AtlantiCare employees

take care of each other

Gifts to the Starfish Fund assisted 148 employees in the past five-years experiencing financial hardships.

The smoke cleared, leaving almost nothing. Linda Valentino’s Hammonton house burned in 2018. They lost just about everything, including their beloved chihuahua, Billy Bob. Fortunately, the rest of the family escaped injury – but theywere homeless. Complicating things even more, her husband, Henry, was recovering from a recent heart attack. The medical bills had been piling up, even before the fire. The stress and uncertainty were nearly overwhelming. Relief came when the AtlantiCare Starfish Fund provided the down payment on their new apartment, where they’ve been since the fire. “Without that money, I don’t knowwhat we would have done. It really helped when we needed it. God willing, fingers crossed, we’re about to buy a condo,” recalls Linda, a Hammonton Urgent Care Center customer service rep. The Starfish Fund exists thanks to the generosity of AtlantiCare employees. It is designated for employees when catastrophe strikes; fire, natural disaster, serious illness – when a major setback puts an AtlantiCare family in crisis.

“It’s so nice to know your coworkers are there when you need them. It’s the best thing in the world. For us, it helped so much, taking a little bit of the stress away. AtlantiCare is more than just hospitals or facilities. It’s a real family, made up of people who really care,” Linda says.

Nichelle Your Support. Funding miracles

Gifts to the NICU will allow the addition of NICView monitoring cameras for each of the 25 newborn cribs giving parents and families instant access to their precious little ones when they require an extended stay after mom is discharged.

Harley Cherry is an active, healthy Galloway Township two-year-old. She knows the alphabet and can count to 20. She loves coloring and music, especially music she can dance to. To see Harley today, you might never imagine how challenging a start she and her mother, Nichelle, experienced. Before her pregnancy came to full term, Nichelle had serious complications, forcing an emergency delivery. Harley was born four months early, weighing less than two pounds. She got a second chance on life at AtlantiCare’s neonatal intensive care unit, where your Foundation dollars help fund miracles, every day. Today, Harley is every bit as energetic and inquisitive as any other toddler. “She’s sassy and bossy. In the hospital, she earned the nickname ‘Little Diva’ and we still call her that,” says Nichelle. “Everyone in the NICU was amazing. They took such good care of Harley and they looked after me and my extended family, too. They treated us all like family. It was hard going home without her when I was discharged, but I knew she was in very good hands. They never stopped rooting for her,” Nichelle recalls. Stronger by the day, Harley went home on her three-month birthday to a joyful family reunion. “Having the NICU team and technology close to home is so reassuring. It’s hope in the midst of crisis,” Nichelle says.

22 ANNUAL REPORT ON GIVING

More than a century ago, a group of forward-looking citizens opened a hospital in Atlantic City. Their resources were limited, but their vision was not. They converted an old house, bringing much-needed hospital services to the community and setting in motion a century-long tradition of expansion that became AtlantiCare. We’ve come full circle. At Ohio and Atlantic Avenues, the very site where that little hospital first stood, we will soon begin construction of a $38 million medical arts facility. It will house classrooms for medical students, an expansion for maternal- fetal medicine, a new family practice clinic, dialysis and more. It will be key to AtlantiCare’s vision to build healthier communities, remove barriers to care and put critical technology and services within reach of those who need it most. Progress like this would be unattainable without you – today’s generation of forward-looking citizens who give selflessly to AtlantiCare Foundation. We had a terrific start, with the donation of the land and $15 million from CRDA, the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. To see the project to completion, the Foundation is taking the lead with a newmulti-million dollar campaign. We need your help to help make the dream reality. 2020 will bring even more opportunities to make a real difference in the health of the community. The Foundation is expanding tribute giving, including peer- to-peer and social fundraising initiatives, plus newways to honor physicians and caregivers through giving. In addition, we are working to deepen our mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners. Caring for the community’s health requires a nimble, comprehensive healthcare system, fully prepared to meet the complex challenges that can strike without a moment’s notice. Your gifts make that healthcare system possible, today’s AtlantiCare. For that, we thank you.

“2020 will bring even more opportunities to make a real difference in the health of the community.”

Samantha Kiley , MPH, MBA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ATLANTICARE FOUNDATION
