Outlook
Intercollegiate rowing has become a major sports program at the University of San Diego within the last decade. Crew is currently the second largest intercollegiate team on campus (second only to Football) and is comprised al– most entirely of walk-on student-athletes with no prior rowing experience. Over the course of the school year, the team is taught the technical aspects of rowing while training for the spring racing season. Rowing offers students with little or no background in the sport a chance to train and compete at the highest levels of collegiate competition.
The University of San Diego crews row out of the Coggeshall RowingCenter, a brand new state-of-the-art facility located just ten minutes from the USD campus on Mission Bay. The USO rowing program offers the latest in rowing equip– ment with Yespoli racing shells and the new " hatchet" oars for all squads. On campus, USO rowers do land and weight training in the fully outfitted Torero weight room and have access to athletic trainers for injury treatment as well as complete academic tutoring and counseling services.
Last year's squad won races against oppos– ing teams from San Diego State, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, USC, Loyola Marymount, Ca l Berke– ley, Sacramento State, Stanford, and UC Da vis. The men's novice four won USD's first ever Gold Medal at the 1992 Pacific Coast Rowing Championships. The women's nov ice four won USD's first ever Silver Medal at the 1992 Pacific Coast Rowing Championships. The future looks very promising for USO Rowing as the number of committed athl etes for this year's squad continues to grow.
