Dream leads to better health and beverage company
Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and beginning to develop diabetic complications a few years ago, Marvin SeaBrooks began researching alternative ways to address his illness when his prescribed medication began causing side effects. “I was trying to decide which of these ingredients to consume, and it came to me in a dream to mix them all together,” Marvin said. The next morning, he mixed the ingredients as he had in the dream and consumed the mixture. He quickly began to see his blood sugar come down and experience more energy.
While sharing with friends and family, Marvin continued to do more research and reached out to NC State University, which helped him become certified as a Low Acidified Foods Manufacturer and register with the FDA. His new company SeaBrooks Family Naturals was born. His products, a vinegar-based beverage called Summer Water Switchel, contains organic apple cider vinegar, organic aloe vera juice, natural lemon juice, raw honey and natural alkaline water. It comes in five flavors: Original (Lemon), Cinnamon, Pomegranate, Blueberry Cinnamon and Green Apple Cinnamon. The Graham-based company’s products can be found in select stores across the state. In addition to participating in food events such as Flavors of Carolina, the company is building a series of commercials on YouTube as part of its marketing efforts.
The entry period for the Good Food Awards is open July 2-31 . Completing the 7-minute entry form is all that is required in July. Entries will be shipped to San Francisco in early September for a blind tasting with 300 judges. Makers can enter up to three items per category with a $75 entry fee per item.
Carolina CoPacking , a new co-packing facility in Henderson, is expected to begin production this month.
Located in the Vance County Industrial Park, Carolina CoPacking will prepare, cook, pack and ship specialty food products, and offers custom labeling and packing solutions.
