General Information Science Instruction Kindergarten

Pacing This curriculum map provides guidance for teaching the Utah Core Standards for Science with the Wonders connections where applicable. Following the map will allow students to access all core standards by the end of the year. To support students’ mastery of the standards, a scope and sequence was developed to address content areas. Scheduling Science Instructional Time Ideally, Science is taught 2 days a week, unless you have a 1-hour block for Brain booster. When referring to the Master Schedule, schools who have 2 1-hour brain booster blocks per week are allocated the following: ● 2 days of science instruction at 40 min ● No science instruction on Friday’s This will allow for 80 min. of instruction per week. Science Instruction During the Science block, students will have the opportunity to learn about and experience science as directed by the Utah State Core curriculum. “Elementary school students learn science best when; they are involved in frst-hand exploration and investigation and inquiry/process skills are nurtured, instruction builds directly on the student’s conceptual framework, and when mathematics and communication skills are an integral part of instruction.” The Utah Core states: “By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these felds that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. Students can only gain this foundation when the curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured to develop rich content knowledge within and across grades. Students also acquire the habits of reading independently and closely, which are essential to their future success.”

Critical Actions for Educators —-------------------------- ● Science standards shouldbe implemented during the Science Block. ● Administrators should dedicate at least 80 minutes per week for this block of instruction in the school master schedule. ● Teachers should use the provided curriculum for science which has been carefully

mapped for the allocated time.
