Caring for yourself as you age

I n the world of nutrition, “fat” is no longer a dirty word. In fact, there’s a class of good fats—monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)— that are essential as part of a healthy, well- balanced diet. Even if you are good at avoiding or limiting less-healthy fats (trans fat and saturated fat), you likely aren’t consuming enough good fats each day. (About two-thirds of the fats you consume each day should be good fats.) Fortunately, it’s easy—and delicious: As you age, your bones start to get brittle and thinner, and especially for women which results in a fragile bone condition known as osteoporosis. When bones start to thin and the body mass decreases, the risk of falling increases, which leads to broken bones. The most important thing to remember is that these changes should not be too surprising for you. It is important to know that your body will start going through changes, both positive and negative. Make yourself a priority because at the end of the day, you are all you have.

Being involved with healthy habits throughout your life will make the whole aging process better for you, which is why it is important to start earlier so the effects are long lasting. It is important to stay socially active with family and friends. This is very important every day and be sure you are talking about this with your physician. Diet is key to keeping your body working normally and water intake is crucial to staying healthy. If you are takingmedication or in those hot summer months your intake may need to be increased. Consume a well-balanced and healthy diet. Make sure you are eating foods that are rich in calcium, high in fibre, low in fats and low in cholesterol. A healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables is best to ensure your nutrition levels needed are met and to keep your heart healthy.
