these 2 cases had presented acute, macroscopic symptoms of inflam­ mation. On the other hand, out of 20 gall bladders which had been drained, only 5 were normal when re-examined with x-ray. Out of these 5 , 2 had been normal at operation, 2 adherent and 1 acutely inflamed. Out of 6 patients in whom drainage had been performed in spite of macroscopicafly perfectly normal gall bladders, only 2 were quite normal when re-examined. From this may be concluded: 1 ) Primary suture of the gall bladder often allows a normal func­ tion later on. 2 ) Drainage of the gall bladder considerably reduces the chances of normal function, but does not absolutely exclude this possibility. 3 ) The complications (inflammation, extension) which induce drainage also reduce the chances of normal function, but do not exclude normal function.
