The Anthropological Survey in 1967 (314 grouping together several tribes under common names such as Bhils, Gonds, etc., Consequent revisions of classifications has caused fluctuating fig- ures of tribal communities and population. Population 1891 - 1.6 crores (93 lakhs listed as followers of tribal religion). 1921 - 1.6 crores (97.5 lakhs listed as followers of tribal religion) 1931 - 2.46 crores (including Burma (Myanmar)) (deducting Burma:2.24 crores ; 8.03 %) 1941 - 2,47,12,000(7.75%) 1947 - 1,78,73,000 (decrease due to 1947 partition of India) (5.2%) 1951 - 1,91,16,498,5.36%. 1956 - 2,25,11,854 (6.25%, modified order) 1961 - 2,98,79,249 (6.87%, Presidential orders 1956; 1959 and 1960 in- creased. 1971 - 3,80,15,162 (6.94% Presidential orders of 1962,1966,1967,1968 and 1969) 1981 - 5,16,28,638 (7.55%) 1991 - 6,77,58,380(8.01%) GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION I. Middle Region : Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh Percentage of Tribals of India in Middle Region : 55.04 II. Western Region : Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Dadar & Nagar Haveli. * Percentage of Tribals of India in Western Region : 26.01 III. Himalayan Region divided into three sub-regions: a) North-eastern: Assam, Meghalaya, Darjeeling, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. b) Central: Terai area of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar c) North-western: Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. * Percentage of Tribals of India in Himalayan Region : 12.33 IV. Southern Region : Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. * Percentage of Tribals of India in Southern Region : 6.49 V. Island Region : Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep. • Percentage of Tribals of India in Island Region : 0.13
