South America, quite rightly, features heavily in this issue of wiredInUSA. Not only are we looking forward to the first wire South America, staged in São Paulo, Brazil, from 1 st to 3 rd October, but our main story also features Chile, Brazil and Argentina as themain investors in the telecoms world. Topping the table is Chile, which invested just under $70 per inhabitant in 2011, proving that telecoms and Internet access are massively important to a country’s growth. The full story is on page 9. Brazil has been one of the most prosperous economies during recent years, and recovered very quickly from the recession of 2008. As one of the original BRIC countries, it has defied many of the global financial markets and continued on its steady course since then. This year’s successful staging of football’s Confederations Cup, the World Cup next year, and the Olympic Games in 2016 have all played a part in boosting the infrastructure of this massive country. Wire and cable companies are also looking to benefit from that growth and it is no surprise that the first wire South America looks certain to be a massive success. Find out about the show with our preview on page 42. If you are heading to São Paulo, feel free to stop by Stand 544 and collect your free copy of wiredInUSA or sister publications EuroWire or Wire & Cable ASIA. See you there. Chile, Brazil and Argentina head telecoms investment table

According to data from the Ovum and AHCIET’s Observatory, investment in the Latin American telecoms industry grew significantly between 2008 and 2011, as countries acknowledged that growth in the sector can improve the economy. Chile experienced the highest investment in telecoms per capita in the region in 2011 with $69.83 per inhabitant, followed by Brazil ($63.36) and Argentina ($59.94). Countries with the highest absolute investment growth between 2008 and 2011 were Argentina (97 percent), Colombia (40 percent) and Chile (35 percent). “The increased contribution of telecoms to national economies is going some way to closing the digital divide,” said Matthew Howett, a principal analyst at Ovum.

economic growth in the region. Yet, regulators also play a key role in influencing and accelerating development in the sector, and as such, should be undertaking key reforms of the regulatory process.” AHCIET, the Ibero-American association of research centers and telecommunications firms, noted that Chile’s data is remarkable because of its small size relative to other markets in the region. “It is not coincidental that Chile boasts the lowest tax burden and, at the same, the highest investment per capita. There is a clear incentive for companies to invest what they don’t spend on tax on extending coverage and service penetration,” said Pablo Bello, AHCIET’s general secretary.

Wire fault downs F-22

The US air force has released the accident report for an F-22 that crashed in November 2012, during a training flight over Florida. The cause of the accident was found to be a worn, high power, electrical wire that was in contact with a hydraulic line. The charged wire eventually caused a hydraulic leak which the aircraft sensors detected, shutting down the hydraulic system in flight. The pilot attempted to restart the hydraulic system and that led to electrical sparks that ignited the leaked hydraulic fluid.

Before the fire could be extinguished (by the fire suppression system) the flight control systemwas damaged, making the aircraft uncontrollable. The pilot had to eject from the plane. The entire F-22 fleet was inspected for similar electrical wiring situations and to ensure that electrical wires are kept away from hydraulic lines. This was the fifth F-22 fighter lost in an accident; the pilot survived in three of them. Two of the crash losses were during testing.

Power to the people – or statues!

Electricity pylons are not the most attractive of features – but designs from a US-based architectural firm could change that. The innovative designs from Choi + Shine show pylons spreading throughout the countryside as human figures in a number of positions, standing and kneeling, and making a number of gestures with their arms. The company has won numerous awards for its design of electricity pylons resembling the human figure. Making only minor alterations to the well-established steel-framed tower design, Choi + Shine has created a series of towers that would become monuments in the landscape. The pylon-figures can be configured to respond to their environment with appropriate gestures. As the carried electrical lines ascend a hill, the pylon-figures change posture, imitating a climbing person. Over long spans, the pylon-figure stretches to gain increased height, crouches for increased strength or strains under the weight of the wires.

In addition, subtle alterations in the hands and head, combined with repositioning of the main body parts in the x, y and z-axis, allow for a variety of expressions. The pylon-figures can be placed in pairs, walking in the same direction or opposite directions, glancing at each other as they pass by or kneeling, head bowed at a town. Despite the large number of possible forms, each pylon-figure is made from the same major assembled parts (torso, forearm, upper leg, hand, etc) and uses a library of pre-assembled joints between these parts to create the pylon-figures’ appearance. This design allows for many variations in form and height while the pylon-figures’ cost is kept low through identical production, simple assembly and construction. The designs have won a number of awards for the company, including the 2010 Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Design Recognition Award, and plaudits from the media.

Superconductor fine-tuning

Typical applications for superconducting wires include underground transmission cables, transformers and large-scale motors and generators, but these applications require wires to operate under differing temperatures and magnetic fields. A team led by Amit Goyal, of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has demonstrated that superconducting wires can be tuned to match different operating conditions by introducing small amounts of non-superconducting material to influence how the overall material behaves. Manipulating these nanoscale “imperfections” allows researchers to exert control over the forces that regulate the wires' superconducting performance. The team's findings have been published in Nature Publishing Group's “Scientific Reports”. "Not only can we introduce these nanocolumn defects within the superconductor, and get enhanced

performance, but we can optimize the performance for different application regimes by modifying the defect spacing and density," Goyal said. The paper reports aminimumengineering critical current density at all applied magnetic field orientations of 43.7KA/ cm 2 , more than twice the performance level needed for most applications. This metric assumes the presence of a 50 micron copper stabilizer layer. Generatingdefects inthesuperconductor is accomplished through a self-assembly process, which enables researchers to design a material that automatically develops the desired nanoscale microstructure during growth. The mechanism behind the process adds very little to the production cost: "When you're making the wires, you can dial-in the properties because the defects self-assemble," Goyal said. He hopes the private sector will incorporate the team's findings to improve upon existing products and generate new applications.

Wire rope gives bridge a lift

The Jacques Chaban-Delmas Bridge, a new vertical lift bridge crossing the Garonne River, is the largest lift bridge in Europe. A central span of 117m, weighing 2,600 tons, rises to a height of 53m to allow passenger liners and ships to pass underneath.

Operation of the lift span is achieved via high strength wire ropes passing over sheaves that connect the lift span to the counterweights. A wire rope winch drive operating system with electric motor and flux vector regenerative drives haul in and

The lift span has a symmetric cross section and carries four traffic lanes - two monorail tracks and two outboard sidewalk/bikeways. Four independent pylon towers – one at each corner of the lift span – will allow a counterweight (a quarter of the total lift span weight) to travel vertically inside each pylon.

$822m cable buy-out

Madeco, Chile’s biggest maker of copper wire, increased 25 percent in Santiago. Madeco’s cable unit, which represents about 65 percent of the parent company’s sales, generated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization equal to 10.6 percent of revenue, compared with a margin of 6 percent at Nexans. The higher margins can be explained by strong demand and fewer competitors, said Nexans chief executive, Gerard Hauser. Hauser added that Nexans will now target North America and Asia, notably Japan and China, where it is studying two purchases. The company may look at acquisitions “of significant size”.

Nexans SA has agreed to pay $822 million for Madeco SA’s cable business. Madeco will receive a 9 percent stake in the company. Nexans, which purchased Olex Cables in 2006, has doubled its Asia-Pacific revenue with boosted sales of higher-margin high-voltage cables as power producers in the area seek to meet increasing electricity demand. “The deal fills a hole, as Nexans lacked a significant presence in fast-growing Latin America,” said Kepler analyst Pierre Boucheny. “But the transaction isn’t cheap. Nexans is betting it can improve Madeco’s profitability.” Nexans shares fell 4.8 percent, but the stock has changed very little during 2013 compared with its closest competitor, Prysmian SpA, whose shares have gained 25 percent since its initial share sale in May.

New cable for New Zealand

Pakistan to connect with China

Hawaiki has signed an agreement with Northland Inc, to bring a new $350m submarine cable to the Whangarei, New Zealand, area. Hawaiki commits to bring its cable ashore in the region and to provide the necessary infrastructure. The cable is expected to be operational within two years, and will become the second fiber optic cable network to link New Zealand with the rest of the world. The submarine system will carry data between Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the west coast of the United States. Northlandwill aid both the landing and the funding of the cable, including sourcing local investors and promoting funding through the Northland regional council’s investment and growth reserve. Hawaiki's CEO, Rémi Galasso, said the system, which has a design life of 25 years, will be based on 100Gbps wavelength technology and deliver over 20Tbps of design capacity – equivalent to around 468 DVDs a second, and it is hoped that as well as accelerating the development of a potentially lucrative data center industry in the country, it will also ultimately lead to cheaper Internet access.

Pakistan will lay alternative optic fiber international backbone through China on the route of the Karakoram Highway. The 820km project will cost $44 million and is planned to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on the undersea cables SEA-ME-WE 3 and 4 and IMEWE. It will also provide communication security and boost telecom revenues. The agreement between China and Pakistanwas signedduring the recent visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to China. The fiber will be laid between Rawalpindi and Khunjarab and will be completed in two years. Chinese telecom firm Huawei has been given the contract. Observers of the telecom sector consider that Pakistan’s dependence on existing arrangements is not only a risk but also entails security concerns. Voice/data and Internet trafficcanbemonitoredand easily disrupted. To offset such a threat, this project will forge a link between Pakistan and the Trans-Asia Europe (TAE) cable in China, which would enable both Pakistan and China to have alternative routes for international telecom traffic.

Rod production shows slight increase

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) has laid at least 5,000km of fiber optic cable to support the rollout of high-speed data services on its fixed and mobile networks. In a statement, PLDT said the expansion of its fiber optic network is accelerating the deployment of its FTTH service, as well as its Smart Communications Inc unit’s mobile data service, Long Term Evolution (LTE). “If we include our international fiber optic links and leased facilities, the PLDT Group now has more than 71,000 kilometers of fiber assets,” said Napoleon Nazareno, PLDT president and chief executive. By the end of 2012, PLDT had over 54,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable in its domestic fiber optic network. That figure was increased to over 60,000 by mid-2013. In addition, PLDT has almost 7,200 kilometers of international submarine fiber optic cable and over 4,000 kilometers of domestic submarine fiber cable. PLDT Technology Group head Rolando Pena said the FTTH service had already reached two million homes by the end of June. Philippines’ 5,000km fiber rollout

A recent survey of 21 major Chinese domestic wire rod producers, carried out by Shanghai Metals Market, revealed that the average operating rate was up to 77.23 percent during July, with raw material inventories down to 14.44 percent of production. The rate in July was the highest monthly average this year, but was chiefly due to a single company in the survey restarting production on a previously suspended production line. This company aside, the average operating rate for July was 75.7 percent, the same level as June. Most consumption of wire rod during July was by electricwireandcablemanufacturers, with consumers of enameled wire, automotive and electronic wire beginning a seasonal low demand period. With copper prices depressed by over-supply, Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) will hold a conference in Ningbo on 5 th and 6 th September to provide insight into copper price trends.
