Year 11 QCE Assessment Booklet 2019

YEAR 11 MATHEMATICAL METHODS (QCE) SUBJECT OVERVIEW Mathematical Methods is a course of study consisting of four units. Subject matter, learning experiences and assessment increase in complexity from Units 1 and 2 to Units 3 and 4 as students develop greater independence as learners. Units 1 and 2 provide foundational learning, which allows students to experience all syllabus objectives and begin engaging with the course subject matter. Students should complete Units 1 and 2 before beginning Unit 3. It is recommended that Unit 3 be completed before Unit 4. COURSE OUTLINE UNIT FOCUS 1. Algebra, statistics and functions In Unit 1, students will develop mathematical understandings and skills to solve problems relating to the topics: Topic 1: Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series 1 Topic 2: Functions and graphs

Topic 3: Counting and probability Topic 4: Exponential functions 1 Topic 5: Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series 2 In Unit 2, students will develop mathematical understandings and skills to solve problems relating to: Topic 1: Exponential functions 2 Topic 2: The logarithmic function 1 Topic 3: Trigonometric functions 1 Topic 4: Introduction to differential calculus Topic 5: Further differentiation and applications 1 Topic 6: Discrete random variables 1. In Unit 3, students will develop mathematical understandings and skills to solve problems relating to: Topic 1: The logarithmic function 2 Topic 2: Further differentiation and applications 2 Topic 3: Integrals.
