Welcome to the latest issue of Tube Products International, which is a special Tube Düsseldorf issue of the magazine. I hope that within its 124 pages (which I am proud to say is our largest ever issue) you will find all of the information you need during your visit to Germany. Inside you will discover a full list of exhibitors and their stand numbers as well as all the latest news on the industry. We also have in- depth information on many of the products that are being exhibited in our Düsseldorf Exhibitor Section, which starts on page 78. The magazine is an official media partner of the Tube show and is being distributed in several locations so be sure to pick up your copy. We will be in the main entrance hall and I will also be based in Hall 4, stand B29 all week. With 1,179 exhibiting companies, Tube once again broke its exhibitor record in 2012 (and has grown eight-fold since the first show in 1988). Last time 2,600 extra visitors attended so 2014 should be equally spectacular. A new feature at Tube 2014 will be the Plastic Tube Forum (PTF) a special show about plastic tubes and their versatile applications. At the forum the organisers will address the challenges and opportunities of the plastic tube market relating to energy and environmental engineering. It will be located in Hall 7.1 and is aimed at raw material producers, tube manufacturers and dealers, engineers and users.

Interwell’s EJCA (expandable junk catcher add-on), winner of the 2013 ICoTA European Chapter Innovation award, enables clients to deploy and retrieve bridge plugs in a single trip. The EJCA has saved two wireline runs per intervention and has ensured the plugs can be equalised even in high debris well environments. Wellbore debris is a common occurrence in mature wells and can present a challenge to the equalisation and retrieval of wellbore plugs. Interwell’s Kenneth Rygh was asked by one of his clients to provide a solution that would allow them to run and pull a plug, with an integral junk catcher, in a single run. Mr Rygh said, “It’s a great privilege for the Interwell team to win Fine Tubes, a manufacturer and global distributor of precision tubes for critical applications, has appointed Adrian Salle in the new role of sales manager. Vertical bandsaw for valve manufacturer BEL Valves, based in Newcastle, UK, is a designer and manufacturer of critical oil and gas valves for both surface and subsea applications, serving evolving markets that demand the highest quality and reliability. The company has around 50,000 valves installed worldwide, some of which operate in the most inhospitable environments on the planet, often in ultra-deep waters of up to 10,000ft, under high pressures and extremes of temperature. operation during the production of 24" diameter split gate 4A topside through- conduit valves, it turned to Prosaw to provide the solution. Although the existing process utilised a vertical bandsaw, it was very wasteful of material, typically deviating from its true path by up to ½" on either side of the blade, requiring a considerable amount of post-cutting additional machining in order to form a true surface. to cost savings in the region of £1,500 for each valve. Further cost savings have been achieved by the use of a new type of carbide saw blade that has a life of more than 50 times that of the previous machine.

Shop manager Adam Leggett commented, “We have been very impressed by this new Danobat machine. It is far more accurate and much faster compared to our previous system, and has created huge cost savings. It has also been responsible for relieving bottlenecks in production, causing work to flow more smoothly through the workshop. Danobat and Prosaw have been with us every step of the way with this project, giving us excellent service and full sales and technical support which has assisted us greatly in bringing this product along.”

With valve sizes ranging up to 48" in diameter and tolerances typically less than one micron, precision machining is of the utmost importance. When BEL Valves needed to upgrade the cutting

Prosaw specified a Danobat VL vertical bandsaw, which has reduced the cutting time for the product from 18 hours to just six hours. The more accurate cutting path has reduced waste material, and the company reports that this amounts

the site and the unique requirements and challenges that it brings. A project of this scale, working alongside one of the biggest manufacturing brands in Europe, was always going to be a big undertaking. However, devising large scale water management solutions is at the very heart of what we do and despite the inevitable tests involved when working on a site of this scale, I am extremely pleased with how operations are currently progressing.” Vernon Ellis, project manager for Interserve, commented, “We have worked with Asset International on previous projects and so they were the obvious choice when it came to planning the extension of the Broughton Airbus site. We have a great relationship with the team who understand the complex nature of our requirements and the strict on-site security.”

Airbus initiated the extension in order to manage increased traffic from the vast Beluga cargo planes, which fly in wing panels from other facilities in Europe and the finished wings of the A320, A330 and A350 aircraft to the final assembly lines in Toulouse and Hamburg. Airbus appointed Interserve as the main contractor to undertake the required works. In collaboration with Interserve and Tier Consult, Asset delivered a complete network of surface water drainage pipework, utilising Weholite’s 1,400mm diameter HDPE pipe, to serve the extended site, including all of the associated manholes and connections. Pacific Gas and Electric installs 100 th automated valve since 2011

In these areas, the shut-off valves have been designed to close automatically when local sensors at the valve site detect a possible pipe rupture. The company has instituted new training programmes and simulations for control centre employees, emphasising how to use electronic tools that provide a comprehensive view of pipeline conditions in real-time and how to evaluate the potential effects of isolating a pipeline segment. Valve automation is one component of PG&E’s system improvement efforts, such as strength testing, in-line inspections, leak patrols, pipeline assessment and integrity management work.

progress we’ve made on installing automated valves – which allow us to stop the flow of gas immediately to reduce damage during an emergency and allow community fire-fighters and police to respond more quickly – is unmatched by any other utility in the country. I’m exceptionally proud of the crews working around the clock to make it happen.” The PSEP work plan sets a target of automating a total of 212 valves by the end of 2014. The company’s proposed plans are to eventually install approximately 670 valves, with the majority located in densely populated areas. PG&E has also installed 14 automatic shut-off valves where its transmission pipelines cross major fault lines.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), USA, has automated its 100 th valve through the company’s Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan (PSEP). The valve automation programme, which began in August 2011, improves PG&E’s ability to quickly shut off the flow of gas in the event of a significant change in pressure. Valves can be opened or closed from PG&E’s newly designed Gas Control Center, instead of requiring an employee to travel to the site to manually open or close the valve. “We’re working every day toward our goal of becoming the safest, most reliable gas company in the nation,” said Nick Stavropoulos, PG&E’s executive vice president of gas operations. “We have a lot more work ahead, but the
