Introduction

• Deliver actions that will improve the competitiveness of the UK’s oil and gas industry • Promote continued dialogue between government and industry Through industry and government, PILOT advances initiatives directed at reducing costs, eliminating barriers and making maximum effectiveness of resources to bring about a future that should see the industry continuing to meet half the country’s oil and gas needs in 2020. Much of the detailed work of PILOT is undertaken by teams from the industry, led by senior management.

PILOT, a joint government-industry forum, was established in 2000 to secure the long-term future of the UKCS and ensure full economic recovery of Britain’s remaining oil and gas resources 10 . It was formed following a report, ATemplate for Change , published in September 1999 by an Oil & Gas Industry Task Force. It is chaired by the secretary of state for energy and climate change. The aims of PILOT are to: • Ensure the maximum economic recovery of the UK’s remaining oil and gas resources essential to the continued energy security and prosperity of this country
