WELCOME A mericans like to supersize things, and that includes their annual convention for all things geek – Comic-Con International. Satisfying the enormous appetites of sci-fi fans, anime lovers, filmgoers, TV addicts, pop vinyl, action figure and comic book collectors, Comic-Con takes over the Californian city of San Diego for four days each year, bringing with it a carnival atmosphere that accentuates the experience. STACK had the opportunity to cross it off our bucket list this year – from a meeting with current Doctor Who Peter Capaldi and Who / Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat, to breathing the same air as Jennifer Lawrence at the Mockingjay - Part 2 press conference, attending a panel in the Convention Centre’s legendary Hall H featuring Quentin Tarantino and his new film The Hateful Eight , and marvelling at the creativity of the legion of cosplayers, whose costumes ran the gamut from studio prop quality to the rudimentary cardboard and sticky tape variety, Comic-Con delivered more than we expected. Share the experience beginning page 12, and head to stack.net.au/movies/ news for further coverage, announcements and trailers.

MAGIC MIKE THE TV SERIES? S teven Soderbergh famously said he was quitting the movies. It looks like he could become a force on TV. Following a path forged by have turned their energies to the small screen, including Sam Raimi ( Xena, Ash vs. Evil Dead ), Michael Bay ( Black Sails ), Ridley Scott ( The Good Wife ) and Guillermo del Toro ( The Strain ). It looks like Soderbergh is the next cab – or is that cat? – of the rank. He's already received widespread acclaim as one of the showrunners on the first season of The Knick, which stars Clive Owen as a flawed but brilliant doctor operating in a fictional New York hospital in 1900. Medical procedures are primitive by today's standards and the series doesn't shy away from the bloody craft of the surgeon, though it also offers up a great ensemble cast and themes of life and death at the pointy end of a hospital, which has seen The Knick compared to St. Elsewhere . Clive Owen received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for The Knick and the series has already been renewed for a second season. Next up for Soderbergh is a TV production of The Girlfriend Experience , based on his 2009 movie of the same name which starred porn star Sasha Grey. The serialisation will take shape as a 13-part anthology chronicling the complex relationship that occurs between exclusive escorts and their high net worth clients. It would be easy to make a leap of logic and imagine that Magic Mike would be another raunchy Soderbergh movie up for this kind of treatment. Magic Mike XXL has already proved a hit with female audiences and there are plenty of threads and characters to explore. Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello may be too busy but there are plenty of fresh-faced hunks that would easily step into the breach. DINOSAURS DEVOUR SUPERHEROES I t's official, Jurassic World has surpassed The Avengers to become the third highest grossing movie of all time. Taking in more than $US1.52 billion internationally has pushed it past Marvel's 2012 supehero big bash. There's still a long way to go before the dino rampage sinks Titanic , with its box office gross of $2.18 billion. On top of the heap is Avatar at $2.79 billion. We all know Chris Hemsworth is a big movie star, but in raunchy comedy Vacation he proves he’s much bigger than imagined, proudly flaunting a muscle that viewers have never seen before. Even his co-star Ed Helms confesses to a little envy after seeing Hemsworth strut his stuff in figure-hugging briefs. “I’m pretty sure there was stuffing involved,” laughs Helms when we meet to talk about this remake of the '80s Vacation comedy franchise. “It’s not fair. For me, I knew I’d never look that way but at least I’m funny,” says The Office and Hangover star in astonishment. “But then Chris shows up on our set and he’s funnier than everybody. And he was game for everything – what he did was a vulnerable comedic step to take, especially for someone of his stature as a public figure.” The original Vacation movies starred Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo as the Griswolds, whose family road trips always ended in disaster. Both actors cameo in this remake but now Helms and Christina Applegate are the new generation of Griswolds, with Hemsworth stealing the laughs as Helms’s inappropriately sexual brother-in-law. THE FIGHTER F ollowing in the footsteps of Robert De Niro’s Raging Bull , Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky and Christian Bale’s The Fighter , Southpaw sees Jake Gyllenhaal make an extraordinary physical transformation, setting a new benchmark for boxing films. When we meet in Los Angeles, he’s weary of discussing the details of his training schedule which, for the record, consisted of two sets of 1,000 push-ups a day, a 5-mile run and intensive boxing practice. “I was just terrified that I would look like an idiot in the ring. I didn’t know how to box when I started. I had five months to learn and I know that it takes me a long time to learn a skill and also to come across like I’ve been doing it since I was six years old,” Gyllenhaal says. “So I decided to train twice a day so it would give me an advantage and it would seem like

10 months of training. Its difficult for me to use words like hard or miserable when I’m talking about a movie where really I feel grateful for the opportunity.” Originally conceived as a starring vehicle for hip hop star Eminem, Southpaw is a boxing analogy of his own downward spiral, close relationship with his daughter and ultimate redemption. But when Eminem dropped out of the film, Gyllenhaal nimbly stepped into the ring with a performance that even his rapper co-star Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson doesn’t believe Eminem could emulate. “I showed the film to Eminem and he was like ‘Jake, man! What the f*ck?’” says 50 Cent. But he doesn’t fancy Gyllenhaal’s chances against welterweight Manny Paquaio.“I think he could last a few rounds because Manny wouldn’t want to put Jake down immediately. But after that, well…” Gill Pringle Southpaw will be in cinemas August 20

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN TURNS TEN "I wish I knew how to quit you." Those immortal lines were uttered by Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain , in a role that would earn him his only Oscar nomination to date. He's tipped for an Oscar nom for Southpaw , but a story about grown men trying to beat each other senseless is certainly not going to generate the enormous controversy that Brokeback Mountain did back in 2005, when it told the story of two cowboys finding passion in each other's arms. For prying the closet door open to a mainstream audience, Brokeback Mountain is a landmark movie and a defining example of director Ang Lee's extraordinary versatility, honoured with three oscars including Best Achievement in Directing for Lee.

COMIC-CON san diego 2015

Comic-Con is huge! With 135,000 badges sold and injecting approx. $150 million into the San Diego economy, the 4-day event is a massive celebration of pop and geek culture. It’s also one big street party. While the focus is the San Diego Convention Centre, there’s plenty going on in the surrounding area and the city’s historic Gaslamp Quarter. So if you don’t have a badge, you can still enjoy the party atmosphere, check out video game events, rides, enjoy a meal and tipple in the many customised cafés and bars, get lots of free stuff (like magazines, buttons and tickets to STACK ’s back from Comic-Con 2015, and it was every bit as awesome as we expected. There was also a lot we didn’t expect, so if you’re thinking of heading over to San Diego in 2016, here are some useful tips to help you navigate your way through the world’s biggest celebration of pop culture geekdom, and get the most out of four days of fun, summer sunshine and cosplayers. By Scott Hocking 5 COMIC-CON things you need to know about

movie preview screenings), or simply watch the passing parade of cosplayers. Plus, you never know who you'll run into for a selfie – "Hello Joss Whedon, love your work!" There’s also a lot of promotion for upcoming films and TV series going on – Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! was hard to miss, with a horde of persistent sign- waving shark girls weaving through the crowd and urging everyone that it’s their patriotic duty to “embrace the Nado”, and squads of soldiers in combat gear marching through the streets to raise awareness of new series Colony . Better still was the cheeky promotion of new Omen - inspired series Damien, in the vicinity of a group of unimpressed, placard-wielding evangelists.

Moreover, nearby hotels offered a multitude of events including the Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive, The Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival (CCI-IFF), an X-Box Lounge and the Her Universe Fashion Show, offering the latest in “Geek Couture”. Even the San Diego Central Library got in on the act with a series of educational programs on comic book art and geek culture. Sadly, the annual Zombie Walk was cancelled this year due to an accident in 2014 in which a woman was struck down by a car and seriously injured; the deaf driver reportedly panicked when confronted by the oncoming horde of walking dead.

Exclusive merchandise. You could spend a fortune at the merchandise booths located in the Convention Centre’s labyrinthine exhibit hall, but there are forces at work that will curtail your purchasing – which is both a good and bad thing. Many come for the Comic-Con Exclusives, those action figures and sets that are only available at the Con and in strictly limited numbers. Which means if you want that exclusive new Stormtrooper figure from The Force Awakens , or a 12th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver, it’s not as easy as walking up to the Star Wars or Doctor Who booth, slapping down some greenbacks and walking out with one. If you want

Panels and autographs. With the hottest new movies and television series being previewed at Comic-Con, attending one of the panels becomes a priority on any attendee's list. All the big ones are held in Hall H, which holds 6,500 people, but like getting your hands on the exclusive merchandise, you have to be prepared to queue – the more popular Hall H panels this year included Doctor Who (amazing how popular this is in the States), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 , Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight , and The Walking Dead . However, don’t think you can rock up an hour prior to the start time and secure a seat. Be prepared to camp out overnight if you’re after a spot in Hall H the next day, and if you get one, be prepared to stay in there all day. The hall and the smaller rooms aren’t cleared between panels, so if you get a seat, stay there. The downside to this

any of the Comic-Con exclusive merchandise, be prepared to line-up with everyone else who wants it, and even then there’s no guarantee you’ll get it. Those in line partake in a random lottery system – aka Line Drawings – for a chance to buy, and the drawing procedure usually takes place at an ungodly hour of the morning (6–7am). You draw a ticket and if it’s a lucky one, you get to join the queue to purchase. But even then, you’re competing against opportunistic eBay entrepreneurs who buy as many as they can to make as much profit as they can online. Organisers have wised up to this, however, and the availability of exclusive merchandise is usually capped at a limit of 1–6 per person for the more popular items. Planning, determination and lots of patience are required to ensure that coveted exclusive is all yours. Buying non-exclusive merchandise can be a challenge, too – our attempts to gain access to the overflowing Funko booth and Doctor Who Store proved unsuccessful on two occasions due to capped lines. Try and get any shopping done during the Preview Night on the Wednesday before the Con kicks off proper.

is you may have to endure panels you don’t give a rat’s about in order to see the ones that you do – past examples include Game of Thrones fans having to sit through a Twilight panel to get to the Westeros one. But once you're inside H, there's a definite buzz to be had from knowing you're among the first in the world to see that new trailer or exclusive footage. If you don’t get into a Hall H panel you can catch up on what you missed in The Playback Room at the Omni San Diego Hotel, albeit sans the exclusive footage and trailers that were screened. Autographs and signings are usually held after the panels and are controlled by a line drawing system (see point 2), plus there is usually a charge for the signature of your favourite hero/villain.

Interactive attractions. Ever wanted to be menaced by The Walking Dead or take on a Deadite with a chainsaw, Evil Dead style? Well, you can in the Exhibit Hall, with many booths offering interactive fan experiences you won’t soon forget. There’s usually a cool souvenir giveaway for participants, too. A lot of these fun (and free) events can also be found at offsite locations, including testing your parkour skills on an Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate obstacle course; visiting Snoopy’s house from The Peanuts Movie ; testing your internal fortitude on the Scream Queens ride (which drops you from a great height); and evading VR vampires from The Strain , chilling out in an inflatable Fargo snow globe, or checking into American Horror Story: Hotel at the FX Fearless Arena on the waterfront.

Comic-Con is also about comics. With all the hype and excitement surrounding the premiere of new trailers and footage from the latest superhero and Star Wars films, and panels featuring your favourite movie and TV stars, it’s easy to forget that (as the name implies) Comic- Con is also about the illustrated pages from which many of these pop culture and screen icons spring. When you do a lap of the Exhibit Hall – which will probably take a couple of days to see everything properly – make sure you stop in at the Artists’ Alley, where you’ll find some simply amazing artwork and the talented folk who created it, who are more than happy to chat about their work and technique. Then there is the area where you can buy the latest graphic novels and those elusive and rare back issues to plug the gaps in your comic collection, be it Marvel, DC or Dark Horse. Although make sure you have a fat wallet or credit card with a big limit, especially if you’re after a vintage rarity – an early issue of Marvel’s Journey Into Mystery , featuring the Mighty Thor, can set you back 500 big ones. And that's cheap compared with others on offer!

Kade Pepper from Queensland was the lucky winner of this year’s 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment ‘Win a Trip to Comic-Con’ competition, which required the purchase of any specially stickered Fox TV title from JB Hi-Fi to enter. “I entered twice,” said Kade. “I bought Family Guy: Season 1 at JB Morayfield and Firefly at JB Carseldine. I think it was the first entry that won.” Kade and his mate George were then off to San Diego for five days of Comic- Con madness, including the Preview Night. “The highlight of the event would have to be the unlimited range of comics available that you never see in Australian stores,” notes Kade. “Being one inch away from an Action Comics #1 is something you can’t do in Australia. MeetingTodd McFarlane was another highlight, as he is my favourite Spiderman artist and the founder of Image Comics. “As an event, it’s just mind blowing,” he continues. “The dedication of the fans queuing up for days to get into Hall H was insane, and the generosity of artists giving their time to meet fans is great. We caught the Family Guy and Simpsons panels, which were great in putting faces to the voice actors. ABBOTT & COSTELLO Part 3

THE

Story

A bbott and Costello's national exposure on the weekly CBS radio programme The Kate Smith Hour  brought them great success but also presented them with a huge problem. Each week they introduced the nation's listeners to a different sketch which they took from their supply of burlesque routines, but after 24 weekly broadcasts they were now running low on material. To keep their act fresh and non-repetitive, Bud asked their agent, Eddie Sherman,to find them a scriptwriter who could supply them with new material. "I know just the man," said Sherman. Enter John Grant, who had worked on the vaudeville circuit for years writing comedy routines for dozens of stage comedians. A week or so later a serious looking Grant turned up at the CBS studios and proffered Lou and Bud a sheaf of typewritten routines. Reading through the dialogue, they both began smiling – which soon turned to laughter. By the time they reached the last page, Lou was laughing so much he could hardly recite the lines. "You got anymore like these?" asked Lou. "As much as you need," said the dour, unsmiling Grant. He was immediately put on the payroll and would continue to write sketches for Abbott and Costello for the next sixteen years. The pair's success on the radio led to a featured spot in the Broadway revue The performances and generated rave reviews from theatre critics and audiences alike; it made Abbott and Costello the toast of Broadway. That, however, was topped in March 1940 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt invited Lou and Bud to perform for his dinner guests at the White House in Washington D.C. The invitation included a special hand-written request from the Streets of Paris . This hit show, which featured Carmen Miranda, ran for 274

president himself: "Would the boys please perform their 'Who's on First?' routine for me and my guests."  Hollywood now came knocking on their door in the shape of MGM movie mogul Louis B. Mayer, who offered to pay them $17,500 per film as a supporting act in two of the studio's lavish musicals. Mayer had no idea at the time that Lou Costello had once worked

California, "This is a major studio movie offer and something you've always wanted." Lou immediately fired back: "That's right, but we ain't going for nothing less than $20,000 a picture". Whilst awaiting a reply from Mayer, they received a counter-offer from Universal Pictures – $35,000 for the pair to appear in the musical Riviera, in supporting roles to the male and female

as a stuntman for his studio in the late 1920s. Lou hadn't forgotten, neither had he ever let go of his dream of becoming a movie star. Consequently, it was unexpected when he told agent Eddie Sherman to "Turn it down, we're worth more than what MGM is offering". "Now hold on Lou", said a disappointed Abbott, who was keen to go to

romantic leads. Sherman convinced the boys that Universal would give them much more exposure than a film studio who boasted that they had "more stars than there are in heaven", plus the money was double that which had been offered by Mayer. This suited Lou because he had not particularly relished a return

picture deal at $50,000 per film, with each production specifically constructed around their characters. Sherman then asked for a 10 per cent slice of the profits of each film. Universal baulked at the idea of giving away a percentage of the studio's profits, but when Lou lied to them that they had received an offer from Paramount, they quickly agreed to the deal. Abbott and Costello's first starring production was Buck Privates (1941), selected for its topical theme. With a war raging in Europe, President Roosevelt had signed into law The Selective and Training Act, which had been passed by Congress in September 1940. This introduced the first peacetime conscription in US history, which required all eligible men between the ages of 21 and 35 to register with local draft boards. Using a lottery system, should an individual's number be drawn, he would then have to serve 12 months in the military. Buck Privates  opens with a voiceover and actual newsreel of Roosevelt signing the Act. It continues with the blindfolded Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, drawing the first conscription lottery number – 158. The scene then cuts to Abbott and Costello, playing a couple of petty con artists, trying to sell cheap neckties on the street. To avoid being arrested by a policeman they run into a cinema that is being used as a conscription centre, and before they know it, find themselves "buck privates" in the US Army.  Their rapid fire dialogue is mostly ad-libbed throughout the film, which includes their hilarious "drill-routine" and numerous utterings from Lou that "I'm a baaaaad boy". Three songs, performed by the popular Andrews Sisters, were also included, with one of them, The Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B , receiving an Academy Award nomination. The movie was made on a budget of $200,000, and when it was released in January 1941, it raked in an astonishing $4.7 million ($60 million in today's money). Not only did it out-gross such prestigious films as Citizen Kane , Here Comes Mr. Jordan and Sergeant York, it also became the most profitable movie in the 30-year history of Universal Pictures. By the year's end the nation's exhibitors would name Abbott and Costello the number one box office draw in movies. Lou Costello had finally realised his dream, for he was now a bona fide movie star.

enamoured with these two "burlesque" interlopers. But as Bud and Lou began to perform their "Two Tens for a Five" and a truncated version of "Who's On First" routines in front of the camera, the attitude swiftly changed. Both the cast and crew laughed so much and so loudly that the director had to yell "Cut!"; he was concerned that their laughter was being picked up on the sound recording. The film wrapped in August with a memorable last line delivered by Lou's character: "A husband is what's left of a sweetheart after the nerve has been killed."

to the movie studio that had once shunned him as an injured stuntman. As far as Lou was concerned, if he was ever to return to MGM to make a picture, it would be as a star. Subsequently, they accepted Universal's offer and travelled West; Bud for the first time and Lou in pursuit of the movie fame that had eluded him a dozen years before. By the mid 1930s Universal Pictures had been close to bankruptcy; their movies had become hackneyed and unimaginative, with the bulk of their output being an almost continuous series of horror and jungle films. With no major stars under contract and second rate directors behind the cameras, the end result was an ever-diminishing box office returns. Universal Pictures was saved from oblivion by a young MGM reject named Deanna Durbin. In 1935, the teenage Canadian soprano singer had made an MGM musical short with another young unknown singer, Judy Garland. The story, possibly apocryphal, is that when Louis B. Mayer saw the film, he said "Fire the fat one". He had actually meant Judy Garland, but the producer fired Durbin instead as, just like Garland, her weight tended to fluctuate. Durbin was quickly signed up by Universal for a series of musicals in which she became a singing sensation and a bigger box office attraction than Shirley Temple. Although a very private and extremely reluctant actress, nevertheless, by 1940, Deanna Durbin was the most highly paid female star in the world and single-handedly rescued Universal Pictures from its creditors. When Abbott and Costello arrived at Universal City they soon realised that their film debut was not going to be anywhere near as exuberant as a typical Durbin musical production. In fact the low budget film – now retitled One Night in the Tropics (1940) – had already started filming, and the cast were forced to re-shoot new scenes to accommodate the comedy duo. Needless to say the director and the cast were not exactly

With filming complete, the boys hurried back to New York to undertake a vaudeville tour and continue their weekly scheduled radio spot. When One Night in the Tropics premiered in late October 1940, it was critically lambasted as "a tedious romantic farce that only comes to life when the new comedy team of Abbott and Costello appear on the screen". During its general release cinema audiences, too, enjoyed and laughed at the A&C routines, but the film was an overall flop. The studio, however, had noted the duo's originality and the audience's positive reaction to the sketches A&C had provided for the film. Universal executives now offered them a four-

Man of Steel

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Henry Cavill laying around on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. set, with Guy Ritchie and Armie Hammer

What do you get when you cross Superman, Guy Ritchie and Ian Fleming? The movie reboot of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. of course. Henry Cavill reveals what we can expect from this daring, suave remake.

I f there’s one thing Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie have in common, it’s their ability to take something classic and make it their own. For Ritchie it was his highly acclaimed Sherlock Holmes franchise, and for Cavill, it was donning the famous red and blue suit to become Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel . It’s fitting then (as fitting as a superhero in spandex) that they join forces for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. , a story based on the classic '60s spy series which starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. "Guy Ritchie is an amazing filmmaker and he has tried to do something different from what he's done before," says Cavill. "The atmosphere of the story is very unique and I enjoyed playing Napoleon Solo and being part of the chemistry that Guy wanted to create. I would make every movie with him if I had the chance.” Like the original series, co-created by Ian Fleming, the film revels in its carefree approach to the spy genre. Set during the Cold War era, there's plenty of retro glamour and irreverent banter between Cavill and Armie Hammer, who plays his reluctant KGB partner. "It's cool, sexy, fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously. There's lots of adrenaline and a Swinging Sixties feel to the film," he reveals. Which naturally recalls another of Fleming’s famous heroes, James Bond, who ironically Cavill was in the running to play, but missed out to Daniel Craig. However, he insists that Napoleon Solo is a “very different animal” to Bond. “He’s NOT for queen and country. He’s for

back. I confess that I won't be buying a Vespa at any point in the near future." Success has been hard won for Cavill. Hailing from the remote Island of Jersey and part of a large family with strong ties to the British military – his father served in the Navy, his brother Piers a former army officer, and his brother Nick a Major in the Marines – Cavill assumed that he too would march the same military path, until he discovered acting. Bullied as a child for being overweight, he credits his family for providing the support that has allowed him to flourish into the actor he has become. “I'm much tougher and strong-willed because of all that,” he explains. “I was lucky to have wonderfully supportive parents who were constantly encouraging me and helping me achieve my goals in life. I also have great brothers who always stood beside me, and I do the same for them.” Humble, gracious and handsome, Cavill is the quintessential British gentleman with

Napoleon Solo and Napoleon Solo,” he laughs. Shot on location in Rome, London, the Amalfi Coast and Naples, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. delivers everything you’d expect from a classic spy thriller, including beautiful and dangerous women played by Alicia Vikander and Australia’s Elizabeth Debicki as the villainous Victoria Vinciguerra. Whilst his character in the film may be a fearless cad, Cavill confesses that Guy Ritchie is an amazing filmmaker... I would make every movie with him if I had the chance

his feet planted firmly on the ground. Superhero and superspy-antics aside, the actor keeps his ego firmly in check.

driving around Rome and the Spanish Steps wasn’t as easy as it looked. “I'm not that great a driver and especially not when Armie Hammer is riding in the

“Work is important to me, of course, but when your life is drawing to an end, the only thing that you will look back on and think about is all the beautiful times you've spent with the people you love.
