I would like to start by thanking all the members who attended the AGM on the 5th of June. By a unanimous vote, the proposed rule changes that all members were supplied with in advance of the meeting, were passed. If however anyone would like to have the updated rules re-sent to them, please ask anyone in the office to arrange to have these electronically sent to you. Whilst I am on the subject of rule changes, the GDPR regulations that many of you will have heard about, are now law. Our updated rule book caters for this change, FOREWORD

but as we have a legitimate reason to contact you regarding your purchases through Woldmarsh, there is no need for us to gain specific approval from you to do this. If any of you have a list or lists of prospective customers, particularly where you may want to target these in order to sell a product to them, then you will have had to assess the impact of this legislation on your business. If you wish to discuss how we have approached this subject then please either ring me at the office or talk to me at one of the summer shows where Woldmarsh will be in attendance. As we can meet up to half the membership in a summer season through attending shows we will be attending

a number of significant events in our area which started with the Lincolnshire Show. This will be followed by the Great Yorkshire, Driffield and Ryedale events. Make sure you come along to sample our hospitality and talk to some of the key people from our office. We started our member events with a visit to Blankney Estate this year that had a significant waiting list of members looking to visit. We have had a number of suggestions for next year’s tour and I will be happy to hear of any suggestions or offers should any of our members be interested in hosting this.

WOLDMARSH/LRSN GOLF DAY 2018

A bright sunny day in May saw 21 teams take part in what was a very enjoyable golf day at Waltham Windmill Golf Club. It turned out to be the most successful yet, raising approximately £7,500 for LRSN to enable them to continue to support people in the rural community in Lincolnshire. This is a tremendous amount and raising this amount of money would not be possible without the continued support of our members and sponsors. MAX FORMAN Over recent weeks Max has spent a great deal of time thinking about his future and what experiences are to be found from taking time out to go travelling the world. While it is with regret that we have accepted Max’s resignation it is with an equal measure of sincerity that we wish him “bon voyage” in the hope he will have the most wonderful time in the months to come. Although Max has not been with Woldmarsh for a long time it’s been enough for him to be well liked by the team, our suppliers and the members. We hope that Max will keep us updated on his travels periodically.

AGROCHEMICAL

agchem@woldmarsh.com

Gemini Agriculture are a UK based manufacturing and marketing business offering reliable and quality generic agrochemicals who are slowly increasing their portfolio of products to UK growers.

They have an increasingly important range of autumn herbicides, however detailed below is a new formulation of maleic hydrazide that may be of interest to potato growers. For pricing and availability details contact James in the Agchem team.

NEW LIQUID FORMULATION OF MALEIC HYDRAZIDE

Maleic hydrazide in now available in the UK as an easy-to-use liquid formulation, registered as Itcan SL 270 , this soluble concentrate is registered for use in onion and potato crops. 2,997gai/ha (the same as Fazor at 5kg/ha) providing sprout suppression and volunteer control in following crops. For onion crops, the maximum recommended dose is 8.9 l/ ha, delivering 2,403 gai/ha. Volunteer potatoes are becoming an increasing issue and their control starts in the growing crop. With around 2,000 growers planting the UK’s 120,000ha (approx.) of potatoes, there’s a huge dependency on rented land but growers still need to take responsibility for volunteers, especially if rented fields form part of their rotation. Volunteer potatoes in successive crops play host to PCN, compounding future problems if left uncontrolled, as well as being a primary source of blight inoculum for nearby potato crops. Failure to control volunteer The maximum label rate for use on potatoes is 11.1 l/ha which delivers

the tubers. Itcan SL should not be applied to drought stressed crops or during the heat of the day. Timing is key but ensure treatment is early enough – application is recommended when the smallest saleable tuber is just 25ml in size. James Kennedy, commercial director of Gemini Agriculture, believes the liquid formulation of Itcan will make the spraying operation a much easier one: “Itcan is available in a number of different pack sizes,15 litre drums and 600 & 1000 litre IBCs, so will suit different scales of enterprises. IBCs are delivered with a pump and flow meter to allow easy and accurate dosing and have the added benefits of reducing operator exposure and waste disposal issues. Use of Itcan is already well established in Europe, with an increasing market share, growers can feel assured the liquid formulation offers the same efficacy as market alternatives.”

potatoes in rented land leaves a legacy of problems during the intervening years between rotations. Furthermore, with the UK weather pattern becoming more varied, this spring being a clear example, maleic hydrazide can prevent adverse growth conditions that may cause point of sale quality issues. Dry conditions with sporadic rainfall leave some varieties at a high risk of either secondary growths or chain tuberisation. Itcan SL works by stopping cell division, therefore preventing these unwanted developments. When it comes to storage, with the increased regulatory pressure on CIPC, Itcan SL is part of a toolbox available to growers, allowing them to store potatoes effectively. With CIPC limited to a maximum total dose of 36g/tonne, an application of Itcan SL in the standing crop eases the pressure on store loading and can delay the first application of CIPC. This may result in using one less CIPC application during the storage season. To maximise Itcan SL efficacy, crops must be actively growing to allow translocation of the maleic hydrazide to

Farmplan understand that for some, moving to software from a manual system may feel daunting so they are making this step as straightforward as possible with a range of accounts software solutions designed with the customer in mind. The entry level product, Cash Focus, is easy-to-use and will manage VAT returns plus day-to-day cashflow simply. Farmplan products are competitively priced; for just £198 + VAT per year (which equates to just £16.50 + VAT per month) businesses can make the move and be ready for these important changes straightaway. We want to gauge member interest in this new product, as at the moment it is produced in Qatar and shipped to Europe. At present it is shipped into the North West of England and used in Scotland. Our supplier Certas have close ties with Shell and are the only supplier of GTL in the UK. For them to make the investment in storage tanks at Immingham to supply the Woldmarsh region we need to ascertain the interest. The price is obviously of interest and sporadic indicative prices have been quoted at up to 2ppl over standard Gas Oil.

book keeping functions must be carried out using MTD compatible software. Manual records will no longer be acceptable and while spreadsheets may be used for day to day functions, they must link to compatible software to do the VAT submission. It will no longer be possible to go directly the HMRC’s website. BE PREPARED FOR MTD Farmplan have already begun making changes to their accounts software solutions to enable customers to manage MTD easily when changes come into effect for digital VAT in April 2019. They are working with Anne Cianchi, an MTD Consultant. Anne is a Chartered Accountant and manages her own smallholding. She has spent the last two years working with Farmplan customers to support accounts and business management solutions. They are also partnering with key industry groups including ICB, IAgSA, NFU and the farming community to ensure their solutions meet the requirements of HMRC and are an increasing stock over demand. This is all pointing towards a decrease in fuel prices which have started to show at the beginning of June, but for how long and how far is anyone’s guess. THE ANSWER TO THE WINTER FUEL PROBLEM? Shell have produced a diesel, widely used in mainland Europe that doesn’t have a cloud point until the temperature reaches -17ºC and a CFPP (cold filter plugging point) is -20ºC, it also has a cetane level of 70. British standard gas oil has a CFPP of -12ºC and a Cetane of 48. This new product is called GTL (Gas to liquid). One of the biggest advantages is that there is absolutely no Biofuel element in it. It is thought that the biofuel element (which

This means that all FUEL Fuel prices have been creeping up at quite a rate for the last seven months. Various geopolitical reasons have been the cause of the rise or reasons given by the oil traders. In the background the large oil producers including the US frackers have been increasing their crude pumping capacity by also increasing well numbers and as of the end of May it was reported that the US production was greater than the capacity of the pipelines to deliver it to their storage facilities. Russia and OPEC are also proposing that they will increase production of crude by some one million barrels per day. With the increased production across the world allowing for the outage of Venezuela and the threat of US sanctions on Iran, there is still reported to be a large increase in production which will add to accounts software next year. RYLAND DESIGN MESSAGE FROM SPECIALIST SERVICE SUPPLIER FOR ARCHITECTURE, CONSULTANTS AND DESIGN

“gives greater flexibility in the conversion of redundant or under used agricultural buildings into dwellings” Overall this is an improvement that can benefit Woldmarsh members and that would allow the buildings to be sold, rented and converted or indeed provide accommodation for family members. With this in mind a simple site visit can assess the likelihood of compliance with the new regulations to see if this can benefit you.

In April, the Government changed Class Q of the General Permitted Development Planning order to increase the floor area and amount of dwellings that can be formed within agricultural buildings. In essence, this increase allows greater flexibility in permitted development rights to form dwellings within agricultural buildings. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the numbers unfortunately include any previous developments under Class Q, but the definition of a smaller dwelling does increase the number of properties that can be included and opens up different scenarios for a mixture of properties within permitted development rights. Those who have already converted buildings under the old Class Q now have the opportunity to add further conversions if they can meet the tests of the new Class Q definition.

The amended development rights now allow for up to three larger dwellings with a maximum cumulative floor space of up to 465 sq m; up to five smaller dwellings each with no more than 100 sq m of residential floor space; or a mixture of larger and smaller dwelling houses.

Buildings must have been in agricultural use on the 20th March 2013 and if they have been redundant since this date then agricultural use has to have been the last use.

The Class Q still requires that transport, highways, noise, contamination and flood risk are all taken in to account together with whether the location or siting of the building makes it otherwise impractical or undesirable for a building to change from an agricultural building to a new dwelling.

CALF PEN DISINFECTION

Woldmarsh is working closely with Evans Vanodine, a leading manufacturer of chemicals and have negotiated competitive prices across their product range. They specialise in a variety of teat dips, acid / alkaline disinfectants and broad- spectrum detergents. Evans also have their own microbiological lab and provide an excellent technical service to its customers.

With varying temperatures, it creates an environment for microorganisms to multiply, therefore the health of young calves should be a priority. With annual herd turnover rates close to 35%, having healthy, genetically superior replacement heifers to fill the void is a necessity. Despite the importance of calf health, continued studies show a pre-weaned heifer calf mortality rate of 8.7% and reports show that less than 40% of farms can supply an adequate number of replacements from their own herd. Calves are exposed to viruses, bacteria and parasites in their environment that can cause scours, respiratory problems or

other diseases. If the number of organisms to which the calf is exposed is minimised by good disinfection practices, only a limited number of calves will be infected, and these calves may not develop disease signs if they have good resistance and little stress. Disinfecting without using a controlled programme is a waste of time and money. Using a pressure washer without adding a detergent cleaner will not fully clean the housing. Detergent cleaners remove grease and protein that water cannot penetrate. A correctly cleaned pen allows disinfectant to be absorbed into its material structure ensuring an effective kill and residual protection.

COMING UP Mid-season worming pressures have the potential to cause significant damage economically and to the animal’s performance during the upcoming months, so management is key. With resistance more prevalent; management strategies are increasingly relied upon to ensure the future of anthelmintic control is protected. It is important that the animal receives the correct dose of wormer. Over- dosing is not cost efficient and can have serious health implications to the animal, whilst under dosing can lead to inadequate control to worm populations and an increased risk to resistance. For advice on which anthelmintic would be most appropriate to suit your requirements; Woldmarsh liaises closely with D&H Animal Health to ensure members not only receive accurate data from their POM-VPS qualified staff but also receive consistently competitive prices. For more information contact Max STAGE 1 - Remove all calves and manure from site. STAGE 2 - Apply Shift solution through pressure washer at a dilution rate of 1:250, soaking the entire surface area of pen. Ensure all grease and ingrained organic soil is removed. STAGE 3 - Allow to dry for 24 hours. STAGE 4 - Fill a knapsack sprayer with Fam30 or GPC8 solution at a dilution rate of 1:100. Use warm water if possible as this increases the efficacy of the disinfectant. STAGE 5 - Disinfect all surfaces of the pen. Start at the highest and furthest point from the door and work down the walls and to the floor. Ensure extra coverage on the corners and cracks.

CLOSE TO THE WIRE With many stockmen relieved to finally have their stock turned out, many are anxious for the good weather to continue. However, with foraging and other farm operations seemingly commencing all at once many members are using spare moments to check field boundaries. Regardless of whether it is a permanent perimeter fence or simply plastic stakes, it is important the correct components are used to ensure the electric fence is working to its optimum. This can include; choosing between high tensile wire or conductive tape, using the correct insulators and ultimately selecting the correct energiser appropriate to the scale of operations. The energiser puts out a high voltage, low current pulse, approximately once per second, through a special conductive fence line. This may be stranded wire, electric fencing poly wire, electro tape or electro rope. The fence line must be totally insulated from the ground so that there is no

CHANGING PERCEPTIONS WITH CLEARFIELD

Clearfield is well known for delivering excellent problem weed control, but it is also quickly becoming the system of choice for many growers for a host of other reasons. No longer a niche crop, grown only to control difficult cruciferous weeds, but an easier, practical way of growing a reliable, high yielding rape crop. According to market research company, Kleffmann, over 60,000 hectares of Clearfield OSR was planted in autumn

2017, with 6% of growers choosing to grow only Clearfield varieties. Proof that Clearfield is continuing to change perceptions across the UK.

WHY ARE MORE AND MORE GROWERS CHOOSING THE CLEARFIELD SYSTEM? In addition to the flexibility offered by the post- emergence Clearfield herbicides, Cleranda and Cleravo, Clearfield offers a wide range of benefits far beyond brassica weed control. HIGH YIELDS Clearfield varieties have improved significantly since they were introduced in 2012 and growers can now confidently look forward to good yields and other agronomic features. This was demonstrated in a 2017 survey, where 80 Clearfield growers provided yields for DK Imperial CL, Veritas CL or DK Imagis CL. The average yield was 3.9t/ha, which is directly in line with the 2017 UK OSR national average. For autumn 2018, there are 14 Clearfield varieties available, with many more waiting in the wings, underlining the significant breeding commitment that underpins the Clearfield technology and firmly indicating even further genetic potential is in the pipeline. RAPID ESTABLISHMENT Almost all Clearfield varieties demonstrate a rapid autumn growth habit, helping the crop get up and away from challenges such as flea beetle, slugs and dry seedbeds. Furthermore, all Clearfield varieties are tolerant of sulphonylurea (SU) residues, which can exist if the soil has not been sufficiently cultivated after SU use in the previous crop, further helping to minimise establishment risk in difficult autumns. 4 1

THE BENEFITS

2

SUPERB WEED CONTROL Removal of brassica weeds is what Clearfield is best known for. When Cleranda or Cleravo are applied at one to four true leaves of the target weeds, they provide excellent control. However, controlling volunteer oilseed rape is now also a key benefit for many, who are striving to achieve a more optimum plant canopy, essential for maximising yields. This unique control is even more beneficial where industrial-use high erucic acid rape (HEAR) oilseed rape has been grown in the past as it helps achieve a purer oil sample. Clearfield herbicides provide the broadest spectrum of weed control of any available herbicide in oilseed rape, including control of all other key broad-leaved weeds, as well as volunteer cereals, wild oats, bromes and ryegrass.

REMOVE SOURCES OF ERUCIC ACID

The legal limit for rapeseed oil in foodstuffs is currently 5% but authorities are considering tightening this standard down to 2%. Currently, price penalties are incurred if erucic acid in oilseed rape is found to be between 2 - 5%. Whilst crop rejection is a possibility if above 5%. The reasons for this problem are not fully understood. However, it is thought that brassica weed contamination, HEAR volunteers, farm- saved seed and accidental admixture with high erucic acid rapeseed could be causing the issue. With “weed control” being a key control point identified by the NFU, the Clearfield system is a unique tool to help reduce the weed burden of both brassica weeds and volunteer oilseed rape that may be contaminating your oilseed rape crop.

HERBICIDE & SEED OFFER

As more members consider growing Clearfield OSR varieties Woldmarsh has a time limited offer on two popular Clearfield varieties that will give members the opportunity to book both the seed and Clearfield herbicide with an April 2019 payment date.

The varieties are DK Imperial and Phoenix CL. Both come in 1.5m seed packs. The herbicide options are Cleravo or Cleranda. These herbicides DO NOT have to be taken with the seed but to benefit from the delayed payment, product must be on farm by end of September. Orders for the seed must be placed by 13th July 2018.

Corteva Agriscience (New name for Dow) announced in June that they will not be launching their new OSR herbicide based on the Arylex active ingredient for autumn 2018. This product could have significantly altered the weed control strategy. Launch date is now planned for 2019.

TAKE TIME TO MONITOR YOUR CROPS

Well, we’ve made it into June after what was a very warm and, in parts, dry May. It was certainly a welcome change following the washout that was April but it hasn’t been without its challenges. While we’ve been blessed with ideal temperatures in the day, often these have

been followed by extremely cool nights and although the warmweather was well overdue, the irony is that for some it was becoming a little too dry. The rainfall towards the end of May was certainly well-timed for many areas. Hopefully the conditions have remained in your favour and by now the majority of you will have been busy drilling into a nice warm, moist seed bed!

TIPS FOR ONGOING MANAGEMENT Apply appropriate pre-emergence herbicides. Don’t wait, in the right conditions these crops will emerge in 24-48 hours. 1 6

Monitor for grass weed species such as rogue millets. These don’t generally germinate until June/July when temperatures are sufficient. Apply herbicides where appropriate.

If you only take one piece of advice...

2

Actively monitor your crops. You’ve put in the time and expenses to establish them but the work doesn’t stop there. As mentioned there are a whole host of pests eager to undo all your hard work. Flea beetle, pigeons, game, hares and weeds are some of the biggest culprits with potential to wreak havoc amongst your crops if ignored. Try to stay a step ahead and always be prepared to take action or seek advice.

Monitor your crop and take appropriate action against the likes of flea beetle, hares and pigeons. Watch out for slugs across all crops, especially after rain and treat as appropriate. Be prepared to apply any post- emergence herbicides. Weeds left unchecked can soon swamp your crop.

7

Apply any additional fertiliser if required.

8

Consider foliar feeds, especially in stressful situations such as in extremely wet or dry conditions. Keep monitoring your crops on a regular basis, ideally as much as possible as any changes can take place within just 24 hours. If you’re unsure of what steps to take, seek guidance on what’s best for your circumstances.

Don’t panic if you haven’t drilled! There’s still plenty of time.

CATCH AND COVER CROPS Given the removal of the use of plant protection products from Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs) in 2018, there has been a greater interest in both catch and cover crops as growers work to meet their requirements. Now is an ideal time to start thinking ahead - do you require any advice to ensure you are getting the best from the mixtures selected?

As a Woldmarsh customer, Kings is on hand to offer you expert advice regarding all aspects of green cover cropping, soil health and the ongoing management of your crops. For more guidance on any of the above, speak to your local advisor or call the Kings’ free technical helpline on 0800 587 9797.
