When football is in the air a tailgate party is in the works. It's the perfect time for a Togo's sandwich. With over 28 different sandwiches Togo's can win over every member of your tailgate team. And because Togo's uses generous portions of the very freshest ingredients, they can satisfy even a lineman's appetite. So remember. When it's time for a tailgate, it's time for Togo's.

Rev. Patrick Cahill, C.S.V., Athletic Director Father Patrick Cahill, a member of the Viatorian Fathers and Brothers, came to the University in 1979 with the responsibility of ad- ministering the expanding men and women's athletic programs. Since Father has taken over, USO has added men's cross country, and soccer as well as women's softball and cross country to its inter- collegiate program. Men's baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, cross country and tennis moved in 1979 to NCAA Division I ranks and the West Coast Athletic Conference. 1983 saw all but one of the women's teams join the NCAA Division I ranks with softball playing at the Divi- sion Ill level. This year, women's volleyball, cross country, basketball, tennis and softball will join the West Coast Athletic Conference. Soft- ball will join the others and participate at the NCAA Division I level. Men's football remains an NCAA Division Ill participant and USO boasts an intercollegiate crew program for both men and women. Father Pat has brought to the University his integrity, leadership, and devotion to the job; he has given to the staff and student athletes at USO an added meaning to the word "friend." Father Cahill has a B.A. from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and a M.S. in Education with a Physical Education major from Eastern Illinois University. Prior to USO, he served St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, for sixteen years, fourteen as Athletic Director and two as its President/Principal.
UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - con- veniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3300, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5300. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing, crew, yoga, karate, surfing, modern dance, backpacking, and ballet. USD's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, football, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, crew and tennis. In women's intercollegiate sports, USO fields programs in basketball, cross-country, crew, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. 2
HEAD COACH BRIAN FOGARTY The 1985 USO Torero football program is under the direction of third year coach Brian Fogarty. The past two seasons have seen many improvements in the USO Football Program. One major change was the decision to recruit primarily high school athletes. The past two recruiting years have included the two largest and most talented Freshman classes in 12 years of Division Ill football at USO. Brian is confident this decision will begin to pay off this season. He was also the backbone behind the completion of the new 4,000 square foot weight facility. Before coming to USO, Brian coached at St. Francis High School in La Canada, California where he was head coach for four years and an assistant coach for nine years prior. As Head Coach his record was 28-18-2 and his teams made the playoffs all four years. Brian and his wife Vicki have three children, Bridget, Joe and Colleen.
USD FOOTBALL PROFILE Head Coach Brian Fogarty has spent the past two years recruiting student athletes who fit the USO pro- gram. "We are looking for young men who are in- terested in getting an outstanding education, and have the ability and desire to continue their football career." The USO staff has concentrated most of its recruiting efforts on the high schools. "In our opinion , we can build a more consistent program with four year players. They can have more time to learn our system and be more effective when their time comes to be start ing players." The 1984 Toreros were dominated by young players. There were only three seniors on the team. The 1985 Toreros will see the return of 35 lettermen and 16 starters. The future looks very bright for the USO Foot- ball Program. The USO Football program is a NCAA Division Ill In- dependent. Division Ill football provides an opportunity for the many outstanding athletes who may not have what the " major" colleges are looking for. Many are told they are to short or a step slow to play in the big time. They still can 't measure the heart. At USO, your education is the top priority. We try to accomplish a large amount of work in a short amount of time. This provides you with the fun of playing football and the opportunity to do well academically. We are very proud of our program at USO and we are looking forward to many successful years.

1985 USD TORERO OUTLOOK
Head Coach Brian Fogarty, starting his third year at the helm of the football program, has spent the last two years recruiting student-athletes who fit into the USO program. After experiencing a disappointing season in 1984, the future looks very bright for USO Football. The '85 outlook looks promising as Coach Fogarty has 80 athletes on the roster with 35 returning lettermen and 16 starters back. The roster breakdown includes 15 seniors, 11 juniors, 22 sophomores and 32 freshmen. The Toreros Defense returns eight starters. The major loss will be defensive back Greg Stein. Greg was the defen- sive captain and Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 1984. Heading the list of returning players is Co-Defensive Player of the Year Mike Hamilton (Sr. 6'0" 218). From his inside linebacker position, Mike led the team in total tackles with 113 and was second in interceptions with 5. Mike is joined at linebacker by two year starter and third leading tackler, Pete McMahon (Sr. 6'0" 210). At outside linebacker, USO returns Don Pannier who started last year and top back up Mike Aitken, both seniors. The Defensive Line returns both starting tackles, Brian Laliberte' (Sr. 5'9" 220) and Kevin Rice (Sr. 5'10" 220). The nose guard position is wide open. Top returners working for the starting role are Joe Muklevicz (Jr.) and Erik Peterson (So.). The secondary will also return several key players. Heading the list is Ben Stoebner (Sr. 5'11 185) who led the team in interceptions with 6 from his corner position. At the other corner, Mike Macie (So.) and John Gutsmiedl (So.) split time last year and both will see plenty of time this season. At free safety, Tim White (Jr.) and Tony Knight (Sr. 6'0" 185) split time last season and are expected to fight it out again for a starting role. Strong safety is up for grabs and could be any of the players mentioned above. The offense will also have eight starters back. The key loss will be offensive lineman Steve Connolly who was nam- ed the 1984 Offensive Player of the Year. There are three new quarterback candidates this season and right now JC transfer Pat Dixon (Mesa College) has the inside track on the starting position. Top candidates for the running back positions are Mark Covarrubias (Sr. 5'5" 165) and Tom Woodward (Sr. 5'9" 190). Covarrubias was hampered by in- juries in 1984 and lost his starting role midway through the season. Woodward is back for his third year as the starting fullback and wi ll be pushed by Rick Butler (Sr. 5'11" 215). The receiving core includes a number of players who rotated throughout the 1984 season. At wide receiver Jeff Mansukhani (Jr.), Scott Reilly (Jr.), and Mike Sears (Sr. 6'2" 184) all played equally last season. Ed McCoy (Jr.) will return for his third season as the number one slotback. Mitch Greene (Sr. 6'1" 215) should be the starting tight end for the fourth year in a row. Lionel DeMorst (So.) who rotated last year will see time at both tight end and slot. The offensive line returns three starters. Dante Sorianello (Sr. 6'0" 220) wil l return for his third season as a starting guard. John Savage (Sr. 6'0" 215) also returns at guard along with Dave Smola (Sr. 6'3" 230) at center. Returning at tackle is Sophomore Pete Browne. Grey Mclychok (So.) wi ll be pushing to see some action on the offensive line as wel l. The Toreros also return their kicker, Jack Kratochvil (Sr. 5'11 160) and their punter Pat McNamara (Jr.). Both should be key factors in the season ahead. There is an outstanding group of new players who will be pushing these veterans for playing time at each position.

USD FOOTBALL STADIUM The USD Football Stadium was bui lt in 1955, to pro- vide students the opportunity to play intercollegiate football and other outdoor sports. Set in a natural bowl , the Stadium has 4,000 perma- nent seats located behind the home side of the field . The seats are set in cement and consist of aluminum bleachers. There is a four-foot wall surrounding the playing surface that was built in 1976, in order to keep the field free from potential mud slides. At the open end of the stadium is the scoreboard , which was generously donated by the Pepsi Bottling Company of San Diego. Located above the stands are the restrooms , the football office , the men 's locker room and the press box. The press box , which is complete ly enclosed by glass, houses the official timer, scoreboard operator, announcer, USD coaches and members of the local and visiting media. The Un iversity of San Diego hopes you enjoy your visit to the USD Football Stadium and that you will be back soon.
