We roam the glorious Highlands and take two “Great Railway Journeys of the World”. Relax as magnificent vistas glide past your window and the sensational views unfold. With a ‘wee dram’ to quench your thirst and a trip back in time with a visit to one of the Highlands best loved museums, this tour is a great introduction to ‘Bonnie Scotland’.
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
DAY 1 For customers booking our rail inclusive package, we travel by train through Scotland and climb high into the mountains along the glorious Highland Line through Stirling, Perth and Aviemore to the city of Inverness where we board our onward connection to Beauly. We then transfer to our hotel for three nights, The Priory , located in the heart of Beauly . (D) DAY 2 Our private coach journey North takes us along the stunning coastal route where we recommend keeping your eyes peeled for seals lounging on the rocks. We break up the journey with a stop off at the fascinating Timespan museum in Helmsdale, telling the history of the Highlands over the centuries. We continue to the most northerly point of Britain, John O’ Groats , where there is freetime for souvenir photos and lunch. takes us to Wick where we have a local distillery tour at Old Pulteney distillery before boarding the afternoon train south along the Far North line travelling initially to Thurso before reversing and travelling through the wild and remote moorlands of Caithness, the last wilderness in Europe where enthusiasts still pan for gold, then along the beautiful coastline at Brora to Muir of Ord for the short coach transfer back to our hotel. (B,D) DAY 3 A highlight of your holiday - travelling by train on one of the world’s finest coast to coast railway adventures to the Kyle of Lochalsh , immortalised in Sir Michael Palin’s original “Great Railway Journeys of the World” TV series . We travel by coach to Inverness and board the train there so we travel along the whole of this spectacularly scenic line. As the train nears its destination, you are rewarded with dream-like vistas across the loch to the Cullin Hills on the Isle of Skye . Upon arrival into Lochalsh, we make our way to the Lochalsh Hotel for a light lunch , taking in the views, before making the return journey. (B,L,D) DAY 4 After breakfast it is time to bid farewell to the Highlands and customers booking our rail package return by train, past the Cairngorm Mountains and down through the Lowlands to Edinburgh and homeward stations. Priory Hotel, Beauly An attractive and traditional village hotel situated on the main square next to Beauly’s 13th Century Priory. The hotel is employee owned and has a lovely restaurant with a good reputation for its dining.
