YEAR 11 VISUAL ART (IB) COURSE OUTLINE

SEMESTER ONE

SEMESTER TWO

Area of Study: Substance and Perception The focus for this unit is the role of art in conveying information and ideas that go beyond the obvious and superficial. Students will work with two dimensional media (eg. painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and mixed media).

Area of Study: Need and Desire The focus for this unit is the role of functional design pieces in fulfilling a spiritual as well as a utilitarian purpose. Students will work with three dimensional media (e.g. casting, modelling and ceramics).

Substance and Perception: • Initial Body of Work and Process Portfolio Update • Comparative Study Task • Final Resolved Pieces • Artist Statement, Evaluation and Process Portfolio Update

Need and Desire: • Initial Body of Work and Process Portfolio Update • Comparative Study Task • Final Resolved Pieces • Artist Statement, Evaluation and Process Portfolio Update

Assessment Weighting: There are three assessment criteria: • Comparative Study (20%) - assesses students ability to analyse and compare different artworks by different artists. • Process Portfolio (40%) - assesses evidence of students experimentation, exploration, manipulation and refinement of their practical art pieces. • Exhibition (40%) - assesses technical accomplishment and an understanding of the use of materials, ideas and practices appropriate to visual communication, evident in the students Minor and Major works. Note: • The primary goal for students undertaking the Year 11 course is to develop a personal aesthetic that can be applied in a range of media areas. • Task sheets outlining the specific requirements for each task will be emailed out to students and digital copies of these will also be made available for students to access on Schoolbox.
