SAN FRANCISCO COMMISSION ON ANIMAL CONTROLAND WELFARE URGESRODEOBAN

PR0R0DE0 HArr 0F FAilE - (719) 52S-4764

The San Francisco Commission on Animal Control and Welfare submitted legislation in October to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that would ban the sport of rodeo in San F_rancisco. lf passed as introduced, the legislation would prohibit evenis such as steer wrestling, calf roping, greased pig contests, or those that uiilize cattle prods or bucking straps. It was referred to the small Business, Economic Vitality and consumer services committee and a public hearing was held on the issue on November 4, 1999. After input from both sides, the committee decided to send this legislation back to t'he Commission on Animal control and welfare for further consideration. special thanks to Doug corey, D.V.M., and John Growney who represented the PRCA at the hearing. This issue came to the forefront after a rodeo, produced by the Black Rodeo Association, was held in Golden Gate Park as a part of the Juneteenth Celebration. Richard Schulke, volunteer president of the San Francisco Commission of Animal Welfare and Control pub- licly aired his feelings about the rodeo. He commented that the rodeo would occur, ,,i)ver my dead body. He told the sF chronicle, 'They're inherently cruel. Many animals break down or are injured during the show." The rodeo was held wiihout incideni and is the only rodeo held in the city limits of San Francisco recently. The Grand National Rodeo is out of the city limits and in San Mateo County. Lefters are needed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in support of rodeo. Letters can be mailed to city and county of san Francisco, Board of supervisors, 1 Dr. carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 244, san Francisco, calif., 94102-1689. The phone number is 415- 554-5184, fax number is 415-554-5163. Email address is Board_of_Supervisors@ci.st.ca.us. ' ANIMAL RIGHTS TERRORISM REACHES NEW LEVELS After sending a warning, an animal rights group calling itself the Justice Department, sent letters booby-trapped with razors to 80 university researchers working with primates to test vaccines and treatment for AIDS, cancer and other diseases. Tucked inside a small white envelope were four typewritten lines on a rectangular slip of paper, and a razor blade angled to that it can slice open a finger. A letter received by one Harvard researcher said, "You have until the autumn of 2000 to release all of your primate captives and get out of the vivisection industry. lf you do not heed our warning, your violence will be turned back upon you." The letters had no return address and a Las Vegas postmark. The Boston Herald condemned PETA lor condoning such activities s the booby-trapped let- ters. The newspaper quoted PETA co-founder lngrid Newkirk as saying, "l hope it frightens (the researcher) out of their careers." The report went on to say that pETA has lost any claim to respectability by condoning terrorism. This column is researched and written by PRCA Aminal Wellare Coordinator Ciridy Schonholtz. f you become aware of animal welfare concerns, stories or educational facts in your area, please contact her at (719) 593-8840, or you may write to her in care of the PBCA at: 101 Pro Rodeo Drive, Colorado Springs, Co|o.80919.
