He wouldn't have minded taking home a litfle more, but two_ time world champ Cody Ohl wasn't going to complain about the $6,418 he won at the National Finals Steer Roping, Oct. 29-30 at the Lazy E Arena. After all, every little bit helps when you're chasing Fred Whitfield in the all-around and calf roping world standings. "l feel pretty good about it," Ohl said of his chances to come away with a world title in 1999. ..1 won nearly $6,500 here and that will help me. lf I can just win a litfle bit the last week of the season to go with it, then I'll be in good shape in both the all-around and the calf roping.', Despite a couple of difficult first-night runs,

rounds when he finished just a tenth of a second out of first place in the third round. He then placed in the next two rounds to earn $3,397 the first night of competition. The cowboy from Stephenville, Texas, finished strong as well. He placed in the final two rounds to add another $3,020 to his Finals total. Thanks to the money he won at the NFSR, Ohl jumped to 12th in the final 1999 Crown Royal world steer roping standings with earnings of $28,819.

Ohl was sitting seventh in the average race after the first five rounds of competition at his first NFSR. That came as somewhat of a surprise to those who are used to watching Ohl come out firing in the calf roping at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. But in the last two years, Ohl has proved to be as good at keeping himself in the average race as he is at tying calves in lightning-quick times. He's placed first and second in the aver- age in Las Vegas the past two years. But fans still had to wonder how he'd fare at his first NFSR. After a difficult first two rounds, Ohl turned in times of 13.1 seconds or better on six of his last eight steers and finished with a 10- head average time of 202.0 seconds. "l roped like I wanted to," Ohl said. ,,1 had two or three bad deals happen, but I caught all of them with my first loop and that's good." Ohl made a nice comeback from the first two
