What’s Your Story? - Spotlight

AboutMe…..

Hey Folks, Missy Saxton here. I volunteered to be the first person to write about themselves for Cynthia’s HR newsletter….I guess that’s because of my “yellow” personality! For those of you who have no clue what the yellow personality is, it’s taken from “The People Code,” written by Dr. Taylor Hartman. I highly recommend this book if you have never read it! A yellow personality means my primary motive is to HAVE FUN and my natural talent is to be ENTHUSIASTIC! (Hence the !!!!!) I am originally from Oxford, MS and I graduated from Oxford High School in 1989. It was great fun being raised as a Rebel and if you cut me, you’d see that I bleed red and blue ! I attended Ole Miss, Northwest Community College in Senatobia and Ole Miss again…FINALLY receiving my Bachelor of Public Administration in May 1994. (I was on the 5-year plan.) My major was Criminal Justice and Sociology was my minor. I read EVERY Nancy Drew book as a child and Clarice Starling of “Silence of the Lambs” was who I wanted to be when I grew up, so I set my sights on law enforcement. My mother, God love her, wanted to know why I couldn’t just be a librarian. I began working for the Great State of Mississippi in 1996 at the MS Gaming Commission in Tunica and later transferred to the Vicksburg office. Although you wouldn’t know it now, I did go through and graduate from the police academy in Tupelo. One particular PT instructor called me “Snake Eyes” and “Poker Police” and took great delight in telling me to “drop and gimme 20” push-ups. There is still a pox upon his head. If you see me running, it’s because someone is after me and I would highly encourage you to run as well. So, I have almost 22 years of experience with the State of Mississippi and hopefully Dr. Mayfield will find it in her heart to keep me employed for another six years. I have worked at the MS State Personnel Board and the MS Secretary of State’s Office but that isn’t all that exciting to write about. I have been with MCCB for almost 10 years. I have been married to my husband, Jimmy, for 20 years and just bless his heart for putting up with me. Those of you who have met him, know that we’re a perfect match because of the hot mess that we are as a couple. We are parents to Jacob (17), Joshua (11) and Caleb (11). Suffice to say, there is never a dull or quiet moment at our house. We are loud and proud and you’ll hear us before you see us. And finally, to borrow from Nike, my motto is “Just Do It.” Do it with the right intent and do it for the betterment of others. Be kind. Kindness goes a looooong way. You never know what someone else is going through on any given day. We all have bad days…acknowledge it but don’t let it define you. We each have our own bucket of stuff and we each decide if we’re going to accept your stuff in to our bucket of stuff. We are all in control of our own feelings. Nobody else controls your emotions but you. Don’t sweat the small stuff….. and I hope you can tell the difference between the small stuff and the big stuff. Thank God for the good days and thank God for the not-so-good days. I am grateful to have every day that God gives me and my prayer is that He uses me daily. And lastly, don’t bite anybody….advice from my dad…..it has served me well.
