8.1: Chemistry 3 Dimensions & Progressions

Unit 2

STANDARD ● 8.1.4 Obtain and evaluate information to describe how synthetic materials come from natural resources, what their functions are, and how society uses these new materials. Examples of synthetic materials could include medicine, foods, building materials, plastics, and alternative fuels. (MS-PS1-3)

CONCEPTS

SKILLS

● Synthetic materials ● Natural resources ● Functions ● Societal use of new materials

● Obtain and evaluate

LEARNING PROGRESSIONS

● Humans depend on earth’s land, ocean, atmosphere, and biosphere for many different resources. ● Minerals, fresh water, and biospheres resources are limited or non-renewable. ● These resources are distributed unevenly around the planet as a result of past geologic processes ● Different types of synthetic materials that can be produced could include medicine, foods, building materials, plastics, etc.

VOCABULARY

● Synthetic ● Nonrenewable ● Geologic process

● Environmentally friendly

POSSIBLE PHENOMENA ● You can use natural or synthetic motor oil in some cars, but in many newer cars, you can only use synthetic motor oil. ● Imitation vanilla and vanilla extract are both used to favor foods and have identical chemical formulas. ● Ancient medicines include salicylic acid, derived from willow extract and other plants. Acetylsalicylic acid (or Aspirin), is similar to salicylic acid and is available at the grocery store. ● Synthetic rubber can be made from naphtha, which is derived from the refnement of coal and oil. ● Limestone is burned in the production of concrete.

END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE SUPPORTS ● I can describe how synthetic materials come from natural resources. ○ Language Supports:
