ASSISTANT COACH / MANAGER

Jack Avina Third Year

Beginning his 3rd season with Hank Egan's coaching staff, Jack

Avina offers a wealth of experience to USD.

At the helm of the University ofPortland program for 17 years (1970- 87), Jack is on staff in a part-time capacity and will be involved exclusively with teaching situations and in direct contact with the players. As head coach of the University of Portland of the West Coast Conference, Avina posted a 17-year mark of 222-243. He is currently the tenth winningest coach in WCC history. In his last 10 seasons with the Pilots, Jack averaged 15 wins per season. His 1977-78 squad may have been his best, finishing 19-8 overall and 9-5 in the league, earning Avina WCC Coach of the Year honors. He started at the University of Portland after coaching at three

different high schools and at San Mateo JC in California. His JC teams had a combined 140-80 record. Between 1987-89 he was head coach of a professional team in Turkey. During the summer of 1984, he worked with Coach Egan at the Olympic Tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana. Jack and his wife Claire have six children and make their home in Portland, Oregon.

Kyle Smith Manager

Kyle Smith will be the Toreros manager for the upcoming 1992- 93 season. A first year graduate student in the University of San Diego's Education Department, Kyle is working towards a Master's degree in Educational Leadership. The 23-year-old Smith is a 1992 graduate of Hamilton College

where he earned a degree in English and minor in sociology. A four-year basketball performer on Hamilton's team, Smith helped lead his 1990-91 squad to a 26-1 season (24-0 regular season finish) and #1 national rank– ing among NCAA Division III teams. As a starting point guard, he averaged 10.0 ppg and led the team in assists, steals, free throw percent– age and three-point accuracy. A native of Houston, Texas, Smith prepped at Alief Hastings High School (1988 graduate). A volun– teer manager for the Toreros, Smith hopes to get into college coaching in the future.
