Education Officer’s Report – March 2018.

1. Discussions around the Apprenticeship Trailblazer Group have continued. 10 affiliates are required to make this work. To date – the Bakers’ Union, PCS and the GMB have definitely committed. 2. The situation surrounding the Learning Pool (e-learning platform) has been clarified, and 2 training sessions have been booked with the company for GFTU staff. Materials will be trailed on the platform for the induction of hotel staff; and the SWU and the Bakers’ union have already expressed an interest in using the system.

3. New GFTU course certificates have been produced for the core courses.

4. The Formac programme has come to an end on the 2017-18 cycle.

5. PCS, the POA and the GGCA unions are all seeking to access GFTU assistance and services for their internal education programmes.

6. The SLA with the TSSA is now only awaiting clarification over the setting of the annual fee for GFTU services.

7. The new Workable Books title, Bill Ash’s Heroes in the Evening Mist will be published in time for Easter.

8. Work is on-going with the shadow Chancellor’s office regarding the ‘Shout Out’ programme which aims at youth re-engagement with politics.

9. Since the appointment of Ros Hartshorn, as Education Administrator, the running of the administration and service to affiliates has improved considerably.

10. GFTU hosted a visit from a party of Chinese trades unionists at Quorn Grange. The visit was arranged through a commercial company; and GFTU has asked that the Federation can have more notice and information in order to help with, and accommodate, future visits.

11. GFTU has been approached to sponsor the People’s History Hub, an online presence created by Chris Jury. GMB and Unite are already signed-up to the project. In the first case, this would amount to a letter of support from the GFTU and a request for a £500 grant from the ET.
