the operation represented a step change in the acceptance of this technology, providing a practical and cost-effective solution at large diameters to ease the process of making repairs and new connections to gas distribution systems. UPLUS offers a full service for flow- stopping gas mains, including fitting access saddles and providing and deploying flow-stop bags. UPLUS is also able to cut out a length of isolated pipe, connect and commission a replacement piece, and tee or cap it as required. Flow-stopping provides a viable alternative to squeeze-off techniques for large diameter mains, reducing the size of the excavation needed, and improving the streetworks management environment. Check valves The patented WaStop valve developed by Wapro AB, Sweden, is a simple, reliable solution in non-return valves. WaStop can be installed as protection against basement flooding in residential and commercial buildings. As a check valve in sewage and storm water drains, WaStop effectively stops backflow. The valve can even function as an odour stopper in sewage systems.

The WaStop check valve from Wapro can be installed quickly and easily S S

WaStop is an elastomer check valve containing only two parts – a sleeve and a pipe. The valve is completely free from obstruction between the inlet and outlet and has no mechanical parts, seats or balls to cause problems.

It has very low damping qualities, opening with only a few centimetres of water pressure. WaStop is self-cleaning, requiring minimal maintenance.

The valve is available in dimensions from DN75 to DN1200, and installation is simple, even in existing pipes and chambers. An installation example can be found in Hunstanton, UK. Hunstanton has a long tradition for having unpredictable and severe tides.

Directly in the path of these tidal surges from the North Sea was a long sea outfall that was fitted with a cast iron flap valve.

When this flap valve failed, the answer was to install a 700mm WaStop directly into the end of the outfall.

The installation took less than two hours. With the WaStop installed within the existing outfall, very little of its profile is exposed to lateral wave action, unlike the flap valve. Wapro AB is currently expanding its export market as interest for its products grows. Products are currently sold in Scandinavia, UK, Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland, USA, Canada and Switzerland.
