Milk Groups

• Human milk can be assigned to one of 4 milk groups (similar to blood groups) • Groups depend on the activity of 2 enzymes, fucosyltransferase 2 ( FUT2 ) encoded by the secretor gene & fucosyltransferase 3 ( FUT3 ) encoded by the Lewis gene. • FUT2 is responsible for adding fucose to HMO via an Ş-1,2-linkage to terminal Gal. • FUT3 is responsible for adding fucose to HMO via an Ş-1,4-linkage to subterminal GlcNAc
