• 87 patients (45% T1-T2) treated with primary surgery followed by postoperative EBRT. • 5-year disease-specific survival rate was T1: 88%, T2: 64%, T3: 58%, T4: 30% • Surgical treatment of SCC of the tongue base is highly effective for early lesions . • Because both functional outcome and survival are poor after surgical treatment of advanced lesions , we now offer brachytherapy with XRT or combined chemoradiation
